' Many animal species have been persecuted severely, some entirely eliminated by some people's belief in "na ture fakery." Over a period of years these animal myths have worn many faces with various shades of complexion; in some cases have even assumed grotesque forms. Fiction and fantasy have painted many innocent char acters a dull black and most of the tales were malicious and erroneous half-truths, in dicating only a sad ignorance on the part of those who believed,- but never" took the trouble to find out the true facts. It's not too complimentary to some of us that "nature fakers" x still expound their myths as fact and too many times they are believed. Common Belief Let's begin with this one the belief that a "toad was found alive, after being bur ied and sealed in a corner stone for many years." Some times the report attempts to substantiate facts by quoting some older resident who "dis tinctly remembers when the toad was sealed in the corner- Youth Treated Alter Accidental Shooting Ashland-A 16-year-old Ash land youth accidentally shot himself in the leg with a .22 caliber pistol while crawling through a fence near his father's property Friday after noon, according to city police. Police said the youth, Gary M. Hegler, 209 Crowson rd., was treated by a private doc tor but not hospitalized. The bullet entered his right leg about seven inches below his hip, police stated, and traveled downward about six inches. To die is the fate of all living creatures, even toads, lizards or any other living animal. The toad in the corn erstone is no exception. Not even a toad or a horned liz ard or anything else could live if sealed in a cornerstone for any length of time. With out food, water and oxygen, life cannot be sustained. Of course a cold-blooded reptile could last much longer than a warm-blooded animal, but even they would number their existence in days instead of weeks or months. The belief that sharks fol low a ship where death has occurred is equally false. Neither' is an elephant afraid of a mouse. An ostrich does not rtiry its head in . the sand in the belief that it is hidden from its enemies. Panthers do not stalk human beings for the express purpose of attack ing them but only because its nature is to stalk and it is curious. Its curiosity causes it to make a fool of itself. One of the most persistent of the "nature fakers" is the imaginative person who tells of the harrowing experience of being stalked by the wolf pack. This one, like the story of "Little Red Riding Hood" is a hoax. About the largest great squid ever recorded from the world's oceans measured about .50 feet from one ten tacle end to the other and this included the soft body. Yet there are any number of sea stories of great squids wrap ping their giant tentacles around two or three masted sailing ships and carrying them, men and all, down , to the "bottom of the sea." Eagles do not carry off small . children. Neither will the "blue racer" snake chase a man until he falls down in utter exhaustion. The vision ary snakes that may . chase some men over the threshold are figments of an over-activated " imagination. What happens is that when she gets ' some distance from her house she gets a terrible panic, and feels that she just must rush back home because only there will she find safety. She has had a lot of psychiatric treat ment but it didn't do any good. She suspects that her trouble is due partly to the fact that she is much like her very worrisome aunt who is in a mental hospital. If the lady could get from the Public Library a big book called "The Locomotive God," written by the late Professor W. E. Leonard, she would see there how extremely difficult it is to overcome a phobia of going away from home. The only persons I know who have triumphed over it had the guts to keep going out and going out until at last they forgot their fear.
