This Mother is Eaten by Her Children-from the Inside To partially understand the strange and terrible thing that can happen to the hero ine of this true story, it is necessary to know a few of the peculiar habits and bi zarre requirements of this species of insect that science classifies as a parasitic wasp. For some little understood reason, Nature designed some of the wasps to demand un usual location for the dis position of their eggs - very unorthodox locations in which the baby wasps will be in the living body of an other insect whose unwilling tissues will furnish food for hungry mouths. The fact that the host will be eaten alive is of no con cern to the mother wasp or of the baby wasps that will hatch. The, mother wasp, how ever, is somewhat choosy as to the particular variety of insect in which she deposits her precious egg. She instinc '. Jively knows what kind and where that variety is most apt to be found. She will ac cept ho other kind of host. But that's where the system sometimes backfires and slaps her right where she had planned to slap something else. The preferred victim on whose body the wasp lays her eggs hatches out and reaches the proper stage of develop ment at the same time the wasp is in the egg - laying stage. The same device oper ates all through Nature's devi ous maneuverings; the hatch ing out of great numbers of mosquitoes, for' instance, trig gers somehow the birth of thousands of dragonflies who will prey on the mosquitoes. The mother wtspj with the inner pressure of eggs hur rying her on, knows there will be the proper variety of caterpillar on which she can deposit her egg: an egg which, under the ideal tem perature and moisture re quirements supplied by the unwilling caterpillar's body, will hatch out and be sur rounded by the fresh, living food-body of the host for the baby wasp to eat. So she sallies forth, this ''female wasp, swoops down onto the cringing back of her victim and deposits her egg. Then she hurries on, search ing for another victim of the same kind. Now her sense of timing must be of the split- second variety, for she is actually monkeying with a time-bomb"-a "time-bomb" in the shape of an egg; an egg that has to be handled care fully. . - Sometimes it happens that Hungary Children .Being Questioned Munich, Germany - (UPD -The 18th birthday for Hungar ian teenagers is a day of fear and dread, reliable Iron Cur tain reports said Saturday. The young hatch, they eat their mother from the inside. Delhi (UPD Two Chinese thugs made an abor tive attempt to steal coded United States diplomatic tele grams from an Indian mes senger for the American con sulate in Bombay, it was re ported reliably Saturday. This was the second vio-( lent contact between Amer icans and Chinese in Bombay in two days. The U. S. embassy Satur day night formally protested the kidnaping of U. S. Marine Sgt. Robert Armstrong in Bombay. American officials charged he was dragged from a taxicab by six Chinese Communists and then was tied by the neck and hands and beaten. A few hours after the pro test was handed to Indian of ficials, reliable sources said Anadan Andrew, an Indian messenger, was attacked by Chinese shortly after he left the Bombay telegraph office with coded telegrams ad dressed to U. S. diplomats. Reports from Bombay said Andrew claimed" he could identify his assailants, two husky Chinese . thugs, who seized him and demanded uie telegrams. : Andrew was said to have broken loose and fled. He iunueri aboard a bus and reached the consulate saieiy Armstrong had rope burns on is neck and back but an examination at a hospital showed he suffered only "su perficial injuries." Szt. ' Robert Armstrong, Marine who was captured and released Friday by the Chi nese Communist consulate in Bombay.: India, formerly at tended Lincoln school in Med- ford. The family later moved to California. He- is a grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Hussong. His mother was the late Dorothy Hussong Armstrong, who worked in the office of Snider Dairy for several years. Sergeant Armstrong is a nephew of Mrs. C. L.
