M.S. - I am trying to Kelp my 15-year-old daughter, who is having a bard time be cause of her father's strict ness. Bert has always been a stickler for rules, but he is worse now than ever. The kids' have to stick to the , letter of the law they get ' punished by having all their privileges taken away. - Barbara, our oldest, has fcfn verv fresh with her fath er when he lays down the law like that. As a result sne has been kept out of almost all social activities for the rest of the school term. I have hepeed her to keep her thoughts to herself and al ways behave like a lady in front of her fattier, but sne can't hold her temper. . - Barbara S. - I would act like a lady if I got treated like one. My dad talks to me as if I were the worst tramp. Even before I've done any thing he is ready to blame me for everything under the sun. .The reason fpr our last blow-up was that I came in , from a date exactly ten minutes after my deadline. It wasn t my fault or my boy friend's. The bus schedule had gone haywire because of a road .accident. Did my father give me a chance to explain? No, he lashed into me and my boy friend as though we had committed the worst crime. When I tried to explain Dad told me to shut up and I lost my temper. Now I'm not allowed to date until Christ ' mas. - " The Council: , Mrs. M.S. isn't helping matters ' very much by telling Barbara to "keep her thoughts to herself and always behave like a lady in front of her father." Of course she should do this, but it; does not offer a reasonable solution to Barbara's many teenage problems. ;.The fact is that Barbara is right when she demands to be : treated like a lady. She should also be treated like a human being. When her father bawls her out in front of her boy friend, never giving eith er iof them a chance to offer any explanations, he is treat ing her with a contempt that can-only breed rebellion and hatred. Eventually a big blow- . up will come and Barbara will be forced to a total re hellion, which could bring disaster to an unhappy young ster. . Instead of giving Barbara a destructive kind of sympa thy which aligns the two women against the husband and father, Mrs. M.S. ought to be helping Barbara in a more constructive way. She should discuss with her husband the .very serious problem of his temper and his rigid, tyranni cal ways which are having a bad effect on the whole fami ly. .This kind of man is pretty much out of fashion in our . age, and we get the impres sion that Mr. M.S. could be disturbed about a lot of things that don't bear directly on his daughter or her con duct. , Vlt is very difficult to reach a . person who prides himself on his harshness and stubborn ness, but it can be done by a clever and sympathetic wife. If Mrs. M.S. cannot , get her husband to mend his ways or see a doctor about whatever is eating at him from inside, she should try to help her daughter to see the good side of her father and bear with the harsh side. If Barbara can sincerely love her father, she may be able to get around him in her own way. ' (Copyright 1959. i General Features Corp.)
