It, 193f 5 Bishops Attacked For Stand on Birth Control 1: Washington (DPD A state ment by U.S. Catholic bishops opposing any use of foreign aid funds to promote artifi cial birth control in over populated countries has been attacked strongly by two Protestant leaders. - Episcopal Bishop James A. Pike of San Francisco said the stand taken by the Cath olic hierarchy would "con demn rapidly increasing mil lions of people in less for tunate parts of the world to starvation, bondage, misery and despair." He demanded to know whether the policy enunciated by the bishops is "binding on Roman Catholic candidates for public office." No Religious Basis Dr. John C. Bennett, dean of Union Theological Semi nary in New York, said it was tragic to see Catholic leaders pressing "a point of view on birth control which has no sound moral or re ligious basis, and which has been rejected by most other Christian groups." The Catholic statement, is sued here Wednesday night on behalf of more than 200 U.S. cardinals, archbishops and bishops, charged that "pessimistic population pre dictions" are trying to stam pede the United States into an "immoral policy" of pro moting birth control measures in underdeveloped countries. Navy Launches Search for Fliers In Wake Vicinity i Honolulu - (UPD - The Navy launched a 24 -hour coordi nated search today for four men who reported they were bailing out of their A-3-D jet bomber over the Pacific Ocean in the vicinity of Wake Island. Seven airplanes, three mili tary vessels and two civilian ships were diverted to the area. The last report from the missing jet came at 3:20 p.m. (p.s.t.) Thursday. It said the two officers and two enlisted men aboard were bailing out - although no specific reason was given. En Route To Japan The A-3-D is a twin-engine, long-range attack plane capa ble of flying more than 3,000 miles without refueling. The Navy said the missing craft was en route to Japan on a flight which originated in Whidbey Island, Wash. The plane made a stop at Alameda Naval Air Station in California and then flew to Barber's Point Naval Air sta tion near Honolulu. It took off Thursday morning and plan ned to make a refueling stop at Wake The jet bomber was be lieved to be about 125 miles east of Wake when the dis tress message was sent. The Navy said the water tempera ture in the area was a warm 81 degrees - a temperature . that usually attracts sharks. Lumber Market Decline Noted Portland (UPD A gradual decline in western lumber markets during the two-week period ending Nov. 27 was re ported today by Crow's Lum ber Price Index. But signs of firmness have been reported during the latter part of the period, it said. Inventory buying on the part of large Midwest and Eastern yards has had a firm ing effect on some green di mension items and on dry Hemlock dimension. At least part of the heavier buying is due to the fact that dealers can now order for delivery after the first of the year, thus avoiding a year-end in , ventory tax. Douglas Fir plywood prices went counter to the trend, however. Big producers raised prices on both sanded and sheathing in the past two weeks. Announcement of a $68 sanded list at mid-week, an advance of $4, was made by several major firms. ; Memphis, Tenn.-flJPD-C. L. ' Montgomery has insurance worries. He insured his auto supply store against burglary after it was - twice, robbed. The insurance company tried to cancel the policy when a third break-in occurred.
