Girls of all ages have cre ated a major fashion trend with their passion for the tiny necklaces known as mina tures. A small design or pearl hanging from a fine gold chain and nestling in the hoi low of the throat has proven its power with little girls of six and those over IS as well. Even the 3-to-6-year-old set has its own special version of these popular miniatures. Cold Bracelets Narrow gold bracelets are another fashion favorite of all ages! And the power of charms goes on forever. Charms marking every senti ment and every event for every age make a special and lasting gift! Scarab bracelets are big, big fashion among the high school and college set and are often worn two arid three at a time. Bar and circle pins are tops with the younger set and there can't be too many of them. In classic gold for daytime, or, set with tiny pearls or stones for dress-up wear, a circle pin is a fashion must. And, of course, a string ,of cultured pearls is every girl's most glorious Christmas dream. Jewelry makes a lady out of a young girl, and a Christ mas gift of pure delight. Seeing Youngsters Happy Is Cherished Christmas Tradition Christmas History Intrigues Clerical Scholars for Years The history of the Christ mas observance is one that has intrigued clerical and lay scholars for countless years. Researchers have found that as far back as the fourth cen tury, the Christmas festival was already an established custom dating back to earlier eras. The word Christmas began as "Christ's Mass" or as in old English "Christes Masse" or the Mass of Christ. Following the custom of the church in observing the anniversaries of deaths, rather than births. . It was not until St. Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem, set out to affirm, one. day for a uni versal observance that Christ's Mass was changed from its previous celebration in the spring. - , The good Bii-iop was grant ed permission by Pope Junius I to appoint a group of theo-. logians to determine as accu rately as possible, the exact date of Christ's nativity. Too many years had elapsed for absolute accuracy, and after discovering various con tradictions of calendars, as trological and astronomical calculations, the date for the celebration of Christ's Mass was set by the Church for De cember 25th. So it is that since the year 354 A.D., this date has been observed as the date of the Saviour's birth. , Members of the Greek, Rus sian and Ukrainian Orthodox Churches celebrate this" on January 6th. To this day, the festival of Christmas still occurs on many different dates through out the world. December 6th is the day when Christmas is observed in most Western EuroDean countries and marks the be ginning of a long, happy holi day season! Thursday, Nov. 26, 1959 B MAIL TRIBUNE, Medfortf, Or. The toys they find under the tree play an import ant part' in just how glowing happy the little ones-will be! To recognize a toy that pro vides lasting fun for our chil dren, we first must under stand a little bit about play and what it means to a child. Children at play are work ing at the very important job of growing as individuals, and toys are their vital tools! Learns Development The child learns to develop his muscles and his coordina tion. He learns the value of playing alone, and the value of companionship when he plays with others. In endless ways, through play, the child works to be come a happy, healthy, self reliant person. Most parents agree that children should ' have educa tional toys. However, many of them feel that these toys aren't always "fun." Few chil dren will ever tell you - main ly because they don't know it themselves-that they have no use for a toy which does not aid their development. - Instead they hand down their stem" judgment by stand ing in the midst of a play room full of unrewarding toys and complaining to their irri tated parents that they have "nothing to do." Good Toy Is Safe ' Then, what is a good toy? First, a good toy must be safe-. It should be free from sharp points and edges so that serious injury cannot result from normal use. A toy should be reasonably durable . even "careful" children give their toys a tremendous beat ing. Be sure that small unattach- ECONOMY SAFETY COMFORT Test drive the VOLVO then decide! In that case you'll avoid winding up with a useless $10 pounding table because 50 cents worth of pegs got lost. The. toys must have possi bilities of participation. Chil dren want to get into the act. At best they will show only a fleeting interest in an ex pensive mechanical clown which they only can watch. Mildly Challenging By all means, give your children a toy that is mildly challenging. However, the skills necessary for the use of the toy must be well within the range of the capabilities of the child. Many parents will buy toys for their children which are too advanced. Just ask your self the question, "Have -1 ever seen my child, or any child near his age display the particular skill this toy re quires?," and you're well on your way of eliminating too- advanced toys which might have found their way to your Christmas tree. Notice, above all, which toys capture your youngster's interest. Take into considera tion the preferences your child mentions. When you be come thoroughly familiar with his capacities and limita tions, you can make your tour of the toy , stores with confi dence that you'll get the right toys. The most reassuring thing about playing Santa Claus is, however, that children either forgive or forget our mistakes in selecting their toys. At least, they always look forward-to the next Christmas as eagerly as they did the last. Varied Earrings Popular as Gifts Earrings dramatize both the story of texture and the pow er of color. Button earrings take the lead for classic wear, and the upsweep and dangle designs are splendidly related to the "dress-up" look in after- dark fashions. An important trend in jew elry accessorizing this season calls for mixing as well as matching- This is seen in gold earrings worn with pearls, and colored stones " with a gold necklace. The traditional matched look" of necklace and earrings will continue strong, and has been elaborat- d to include the pairing of earrings with pin or bracelet.
