Plotting Points On Globe Solved Los Angeles-(Science Serv ice )-How to plot 24 points on the surface of a globe so that each is as far as possible .from all neighboring points has been solved for the first, time. "The best arrangement is to make the points form the tips of 32 equilateral triangles and six squares on the sphere, with one square and four tri angles meeting at each point. Previously the problem of plotting points on a sphere at the longest possible distances from each other was solved only for nine and 12 points on the surface. The 24-point solution was reported to the American Mathematical society meeting here by Dr. R. M. Robinson of the University of Califor nia. It is not known to have arty practical application at this time. CoL Steve Canyon of the U.S. Air Force, the derring-do fictional hero of Milton Caniff's adventure strip of the same name, has done it again. He has found himself in an adventure that has moved from the comic page to the news columns. An old hand at making life reflect art instead of the op posite, Caniff this summer plotted the sequence now ap pearing in the Mail Tribune about a bamber he called the BX-71. It is nicknamed the "Braille Bomber" "because it feels its way to and from the target, steered by radar while flying just above the earth's surface at more than 2,250 miles per hour. - That was last summer. In October, an Associated Press dispatch from Fort -Worth, Tex., disclosed that the B-58 Hustler had just done what Caniff had dreamed up sev eral months previously. This supersonic bomber had made a hedge-hopping . trip from Texas' to' California, staying within 500 feet of the ground for the entire 1,400 mile trip, enabling it to sneak under simulated enemy radar. Sounds Familiar Sounds familiar, doesn't it? Only difference is its rate of speed was lower than Caniff's fictional ship. If it wasn't that the Air Force has had long experi ence with Caniff s uncanny ability to anticipate future 'events', it's likely he'd be tak en for being a spy. Here's how he combined imagination and accuracy: When he hit upon the idea, Caniff wasn't certain that his proposed bomber was a sound concept. To find out, he de cided to visit Republic Avia tion Corporation which makes the F-105 Thunderchief fighter-bomber on Long Island, N.Y. . ;, Reason for Selection Reason for. the selection of Republic was that its current product is not a bomber of the type that Caniff had in mind and therefore there could be no chance of an accidental security leak of genuine mili tary secrets about such a ship. Also of importance to the homeowner s that latex can be used on previously painted or primed woodwork; serve heads, that would have .a range of 8,000 miles. The final results of Caniff and the Republic engineers putting their imaginations to gether is a ship powered by four chemical turboram jet engines which can carry a fO.OOO pound payload and weighs some 400,000 pounds itself. Fictional though it may be, it is based on sound aero nautical concepts and design. Caniff spent part of his time at the plant touring the assembly line to find out as much as possible about, cur rent methods of military air craft production.. He also made it a point to talk to the company's "tomorrow's think ers" those men who are planning the aircraft of the future. Some of this will be reflected in future strips. But for the present the re sults of his visit will be ap parent in the Dec. 20 issue1 of The Mail Tribune when the BX-71 will make its maiden flight." " ' V : ' ' ' as their own primer on new plaster and dry walls; and can be used as a primer for alkyd paints. Most are flat, but a number of companies make semi-gloss latexes. The alkyd paints are avail able as flat, semi-gloss or gloss, and also are odorless. They are tough, extremely washable and have great hid ing power. They dry in three or four hours. Paint manufacturers rec ommend that flat paints be used for walls in living rooms, dining areas and bed rooms, and because they dif fuse light evenly without a glare, should be used on ceil ings. ' ; Gloss or semi-gloss paints and enamels are preferred for woodwork because they wash easily. The resistance to mois ture, dirt and grease of the gloss or semi-gloss paints make them ideal for kitchens bathrooms and laundry rooms. . ' " -.. A little time spent on pre paring the room before paint ing will pay off handsomely. Most walls merely require dusting, but kitchen ' and bathroom walls and wood work may have to ' be wash ed to remove . grease, soap scum and other accretions to which paint will not adhere. Rough spots should be scraped and r sanded down, and too smooth surfaces roughened I slightly. Cracks and nail holes should be filled with a patching compound, and sanded smooth when dry. If alkyd paint Is going to be used, prime the patched spots as directed on the can label. Now let's get down to the work. If you are using a brush - and one four inches wide- is the most popular for walls - dip only one-third the length of the bristles into the paint, tapping off the excess against the side of the can. Use rhythmical back-and-forth strokes, lifting the brush gradually at the end of each stroke sp as not to de posit a thick edge. Always paint from a dry area into a wet one. If a roller is being used a 9-inch one being the best for walls - pour the paint into the tray, covering about two thirds of the bottom. Roll the applicator in the paint, coat ing it evenly. The initial step in painting a wall with a roller is to paint a narrow strip next to the ceiling. Always roll the paint upward from a dry sur face to a wet one. After you have coveted an area about 2 feet wide by 3 feet long with up-and-down strokes, go over it again with back-and-forth strokes to prevent "holidays" or misses. Don't tackle the woodwork until the walls are dry unless you are using the same paint for both surfaces. About the only part of the job that requires extra-special attention is the windows. The recommended paint here is a gloss or semi-gloss enam el the same, color as used for the rest of the woodwork. Using the proper brush will make the job easier.
