All Not Running Well With Operators of Jet Transports Br ELMER C. ' The institute finds that the public has accepted the jets with the alacrity that greeted the outdoor barbecue, hi-fi, and sports cars. Jet operators have been pleasantly surprised with seat occupancy of from 90 to 97 per cent against 60 per cent for the old piston planes. But all is not well with the operators of the planes. These giant planes weigh 300,000 pounds for the transcontinen tal models and their costs run to $5 million each. Two Types of Trarel v Airlines have offered two types of travel luxury and coach. The Alexander Hamil ton Institute asks why pay $70 extra for a little more elbow room, a lushier meal, and a couple of free cocktails when the trip is over so soon. You don't WCUOJ4T OUUO4WWSy So the conclusion is reached that the jets are likely to abandon the luxury and con centrate entirely on coach travel which would help them in attaining their ideal of a mass market. The next thing is to get lower fares to speed the mass market. This, says the insti tute, may come in April when the new rate year begins. Up to now the International Air Transport Association which sets the rates has not been able to agree to reductions. Jets have fewer breakdowns than conventional airplanes, but they consume vast quanti ties of fuel and labor costs may be counted on to rise which means more trouble for the airlines. Pilots Must Learn Instruments Washington - The federal aviation agency has an nounced plans to require all private and commercial air plane pilots to be able to fly by instruments. " The action was seen as a major step to reduce the number of accidents and deaths involving light planes and amateur pilots. - The new rules, effective March 16, apply to two cate gories of non-airline pilots commercial pilots who carry passengers for hire or operate company aircraft, and private pilots who fly light planes for pleasure or busmess. These new requirements were announced by FAA: 1. For commercial pilots at least 10 hours of flight in struction on airplane instru ments, demonstration of abili ty to control the plane man ually while using instruments, and examination on a planned cross-country flight. '2. For private pilots dual instruction in the basic con trol of the aircraft by the use of instruments, and demon stration of emergency manual ability to control the airplane in a simulated loss of visual reference to the ground dur ing flight. Then there is the matter of technology. Just about as soon as a jet is off the line it is obsolete. Boeing Airplane, be fore it completed an order for American Airlines, had a new model - the Turbofan - which it is using to complete the American Airlines order. The Turbofan reduces noise, makes takeoff faster and slows the landing so that or dinary length landing strips can be used. Bidding for Vacationers The airlines are making a big bid for the vacation tra veling public. Jets are flying the routes to Florida daily. There'll be routes shortly to Puerto Rico and a series of daily flights to start in Janu ary from San Juan to the Vir gin Islands Hawaii is holding a four day Admission Day celebra tion during Thanksgiving week which is expected to at tract many jet passengers va cation bound. Vice-President Richard M. Nixon will deliver the keynote speech in Hono lulu Stadium and there'll be pageants, fireworks, a big barbecue and a lantern parade by Hawaiian Japanese. A New York travel agency announces ''Christmas festival in Mexico" tours with visits to Mexican cathedrals and street fiestas plus American style Christmas dinners. While everything looks rosy for the jets, the real economic tests will come to the fore next year, says - Alexander Hamilton Institute. By then iet fleets will be numerous and competition keen. 'Ideal' Weather Seen for Holiday Washington (CPU The Weather Bureau forecasts "ideal" weather for most of the nation on Thanksgiving Day. It predicts sunny and mild weather from Oregon and California eastward through the middle and southern Mis sissippi Valley and Gulf states. The Atlantic Seaboard will have cool crisp weather with partly cloudy skies. It will be cold across the northern tier of states, with light snow and snow flurries from western Montana to the northern-most fringes of New England. Occasional light rain is predicted, for the state of Washington. - Central Point Police Apprehend Two Youths Central Point - Central Point police last week end ap prehended two 16 -year-old boys for violation of probation and placed them in the Jack son county juvenile detention home. Two other youths, 10 and 11 years old, were referred to juvenile authorities after they were picked up and question ed in connection with a bur glary at Faber's Supermarket in Central Point recently, po lice said. Yesterday noon, a 16-year- old boy was apprehended about 15 minutes after he ran away from a Central Point doctor's office. He was in the office for examination from the county juvenile detention home, police reported. Fifty per cent of its trade is with Russia the figure was 10 per cent in 1950. Its 43,000-man army uses $70 million worth of Rus sian equipment. Soviet engi Wild Life Increased Until Man Entered Area He wanted to preserve a little piece of unspoiled America, to save a space where a few wild things could find a measure of safety, a place where they could live their lives without fear or the slightest interference. He was fortunat- in finding a small tract of land containing a good sized pond and five and a half acres of land, some of it covered with trees. The piece he carved out on which to place his home was small. He wanted as much acreage as possible for his pocket-sized edition of a game preserve. It was expensive but he finally fenced in the entire area. At every hundred feet of the fence a sign was placed naming the area as a game refuge. He erected bird houses, built brush shelters for quail and established feeding sta tions at selected sites about the property. Every morning he distributed various foods in generous amounts to all the designated stations. Nature Cooperated Naifure cooperated; she was pleased to see new residents moving in nearly every day. The quail population increas ed by leaps and bounds. Sometimes a small covey of the little brown birds fol lowed' the man while he was distributing the grain,' always staying a respectful distance in the rear, but usually pres ent. .The birds soon seemed to know just what particular station would receive its quota of food and at what time. Mother quails, with broods following, scampered in and out of the grass clumps. A pair of owls found a hollow tree. There they built their nest and reared their young. Several squirrels scampered up and down the trees, each one fat and healthy. They had ample food; some they stored not knowing that more would be supplied the next day. A hen pheasant nested under a bush. A pair of mallard ducks raised a family at the edge of the little pond. Wild birds of a dozen kinds found and appreciated the feeding stations. Many nested in nearby trees and bushes. Man invad ed the sanctuary, had climbed the fence and started killing They it was who violated the trust the wild things had de veloped. At the same time they destroyed the confidence the man had in his fellow men. Some there are who try to build; others who desire only to destroy. It will accept help from any body to do so. Russia and the U. S. have competed to offer help; lately Russia has been winning. The nation's women are still in purdah, only now losing the veil. Two million Afghans are nomads. There are no rail ways. Afghanistan is poor, proud and ambitious. Indus trialization is planned but barely under way.
