(UPI Telephotos) Stocks Gain Mild Support in Trading New York (IOT- Stocks met mild support in moderately active trading today. Traders moved cautiously In anticipation of Thanksgiv ing which begins a four-day week end for many in the street. Brokers agreed that solid progress in the deadlocked steel dispute could bring about some bullishness if good news comes with dramatic suddenness. Some steels moved up from their opening, levels. Lukens picked up more than a point. Bethlehem and U.S. Steel add ed fractions, while Youngs- town was down a small frac tion after opening off around a point from its previous close Some of the electronics en countered profit taking, but these were in a minority. At the same time, the Food and Drug Administration an nounced it had tested and ap proved as safe another 4,236, 000 pounds of cranberries since Friday. This means that 13,152,000 pounds of berries have been approved as free of amino triazole, a chemical weed kill er that causes cancer in rats. Some 200,694 pounds have been seized as tainted. The pace of the. govern ment testing tended to con firm previous official state ments that there would not be nearly enough cleared ber ries to go around for Thanks giving dinners Thursday. Ex-Golden Girl's Term Suspended . South Bend, Ind. -TCPD- A former "golden girl" who used to. delight halftime crowds at Purdue University football games has been fined $116 and given a suspended six-months jail term for shoplifting. Sandra Hutchison, 21, and her mother, Mrs. Shirley El len Hutchson, were given the twin suspended sentences af ter South Bend city Judge Edward Olczak said both had suffered enough from bad publicity. Sandra was the featured baton twirler with the Per due marching band until she dropped out of school this year. INVENTOR DIES Bradley Beach, N.J. -flJTO- Sol J. Levy, 62, an engineer and inventor, died Monday at Fit kin Memorial hospital, Neptune, N.J., after a long ill-1 ness. Mentally Retarded Attention Called Salem -(DPI- Gov. Mark Hat field Monday called the at tention of Oregon citizens to their responsibilities to handi capped persons. Nov. 15-26 is national retarded children's week. Hatfield said there are some 54,000 children and adults in the state who are mentally re tarded to some degree. "We have a real responsi bility to these handicapped persons," he said, "responsi bility to provide the care, treatment, ftraining, education and job opportunities consist ent with their potential in life." Paris -(CPD- France made it clear today it not only has no intention of canceling its spring atomic tests but also bitterly resents United Na tions attempts to get them called off. French officials were un willing to speak for the rec ord but they made no secret of their resentment of the ma jority vote in the U.N. assem bly last week against France's atom bomb program. Much of the resentment was focused on Canada and Ireland. 'Unfair' Campaign There also was a wide spread feeling France was the object of an "unfair" cam paign launched by the Afro Asian group in the United Nations. This group sponsored the resolution that was pass ed. Some French officials ex pressed indigination over the world body condemnation of an atomic test that hasn't ev en taken place, while it said nothing against the more than 200 test explosions already set off by Russia, the United States,, and Britain. These tests were detonated in areas much closer to habi tation than . the one France plans to set off in the Sahara desert, the officials said. In formed sources said the first test probably will be detonat ed aoove tne ground, on a platform. Bitter Pill The fact Canada voted against France was a particu larly bitter pill for the French to swallow because of France's historic attachment to that partially French speaking country. There were hints President Charles de Gaulle may decide not to visit Canada next year when he goes to the United States on an official visit. The French also believed the Irish resolution asking that the Soviet Union, United States and Britain refrain from handing over nuclear se crets to other - nations was aimed at France. MEDFORDjRiTRIBUNE Page 2 Thanksgiving Meal To Cost Less Than It Did a Year Ago Washington -(UPD- A turkey dinner with all the trimmings will cost less this Thanksgiv ing than it did a year ago and not as much more than in 1954. That's the conclusion made today by The Machinist, weekly newspaper of the million-member Machinists' Union. Philanthropist Suffers Stroke Manila (UPD American philanthropist Max Abelman of New York City today was reported "carrying on well" after suffering a stroke Mon day that paralyzed his left side. . The 72-year-old Abelman was, however, still under a "48-hour crisis." Doctors at the government North Gen eral Hospital said Abelman was stricken ' with cerebral thrombosis. Abelman, who came here to receive honors from two Manila universities, is well known for his philanthropic work in the U.S. TO BULGARIA President Eisenhower has selected vet eran career diplomat, Edward Page Jr., above, to serve as the first American minister to Bulgaria since 1950. Marking resumption of diplomatic ne gotiations between the two countries, Eisenhower by re cess appointment picked Page, who has had long experience in Russia, to head the U. S. legation. (UPI Telephoto) BABY SUFFOCATES East Orange, N.J. -(UPD- A one-year-old boy . suffocated Monday with his neck pinned by the partly-closed lid of a steamer trunk in which he was playing, police said. They said John Bibaud apparently was trapped when the trunk lid fell down. KHRUSHCHEV VACATIONS London -(UPD- Soviet Pre mier Nikita Khrushchev is in the Black Sea coast resort of Gagry, Radio Moscow said Monday. It was presumed he was on vacation. Here's the paper's item-by-item rundown on prices of Thanksgiving ingredients this year and last: -Turkey is 10 cents a pound less for a 17-pound bird, or $1.70 less than the $8.33 price tag in 1958. , -Coffee is now 77 cents a pound, a decrease of 12 cents. -Eggs at 69 cents a dozen, are a dime a dozen cheaper. -Apples are down from 45 cents to 39 cents per five pound bag. Milk Costs Less -Lettuce is a cent less per head. Milk now costs 24 cents instead of 25 cents a quart in the Washington area. -Cranberries, canned pump kin and bread prices haven't changed. -A few groceries cost more this year. They are celery, up four cents a bunch; butter, up a penny a pound, and po tatoes, also a cent a pound higher. The union publication said it checked results of its lat est survey with a 1954 round up and found that prices were very similar. Students Overcome By Monoxide Gas Stillwater, Okla. (UPD Deadly carbon monoxide gas and mass, hysteria felled about 300 high school stu dents Monday night-most of them girls-and affected an other 700 students and adults during a choral festival at Oklahoma State University. Officials said the poisonous gas fumes were sucked into the building through fresh air vents from the numerous buses parked around the huge field house with their motors running. . (UPD Roger (The Terrible) Touhy, prohibition era prince of Chicago's under world, walks to freedom to day. Touhy will leave Stateville Penitentiary after 25 years be hind bars for a crime he says never happened. Touhy, now a stooped and graying 61, won his parole Nov. 13 after a decade of le gal battles, i His program for' release was approved Monday and T. Edward Austin, superintend ent of the Illinois Division of Parolee Supervision,, said he could go free today. Maintained Innocence Touhy went to prison in 1934 for the kidnaping of John (Jake The Barber) Fac tor, who now lives in Los An geles. . Throughout his trial, and long years of imprisonment, Touhy maintained his inno cence, claiming he was framed by police, prosecutors and Al Capone, then Chicago gang lord and Touhy's reputed arch-rival. The tough little ex-hoodlum led a daring escape from Stateville in 1942, but was re captured two months later. An extra 199 years was tacked on to his original 99-year sen tence for his part in the breakout. Plans Approved The State Parole and Par don Board okayed Touhy's pa role after approving his plans to. live temporarily with his sister, Mrs. Ethel Alesia. Touhy's wife, Clara, and his sons, Thomas,' 33, and Roger, 35, also have promised to care for him. - Touhy could not expect to fade into the anonymity ac corded another famed Illinois ex-convict, thrill killer Na than Leopold. His auto biography, "The Stolen Years," hit the Chicago book stands .this week. Touhy's book, which opens with the 1942 jailbreak, tells the story of his gangland years and trial and details his subsequent fight for freedom. Seven presidents of the United States were born in Ohio. Santa Monica, Calif. Singer Mario Lanza left an estate in California of $22, 000. The disclosure was made Monday when Superior Judge Edward R. Brand appointed David H. Martin of Business Administration Corp. special administrator of the late singer's California holdings. Martin saind Lanza was a resident of Rome, Italy, and that his estate would be pro bated there. He declined to estimate its total value. He said money from the California estate consisted mostly of income tax returns and was needed for funeral expenses and to sup port Lanza's widow and four children. Lanza died in Rome Oct. 7.
