1 0 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. A Monday, Nov. 23. 1959 Hanford May Be Largest Producer Portland - (CPD-J. E. Travis, manager of the Hanford Works at Richland, Wash., Friday told a meeting of the Columbia River Advisory group that Jhe Hanford Works will be the Northwest's larg est power producer by spring of 1964. He told engineers and sci entists of AEC and General Electric company that the atomic reactor plant will be producing power at the rate of 400,000 to 700,000 kilo watts by that time. At the meeting here Fri day Travis said the new re actor, designed for the pri mary purpose of producing weapons-grade plutonium, will be in production by the fall of 1962 and added it would require the expenditure of another 60 to 18 million dol lars to put it into the power business. He said that with Congres sional approval and required appropriations it could be come the largest atomic pow er plant in the world. The average freight car on railway lines carries 976 tons a distance of one mile each day. The development of the "tunnel diode" is expected to revolutionize miniaturization of electronic equipment to the same extent as did the inven tion of the transistor, accord ing to Prentice. Careful Study Conference speakers also alerted forest industry radio representatives to make a careful study of Senate Bill 1737, the Small Forfeiture Bill. Prentice said they be lieve the bill will have the effect of giving the Federal C o mmunication Commission legislative, judicial and execu tive powers, beyond that in tended by Congress when the FCC was formed. The FIRC meeting was held in conjunction with the Pa cific Logging Congress Nov. 10-15 in Seattle. Prentice at-, tended both meetings as a representative of the forest products industry in southern Oregon.
