4 AFL Makes First Draft Selections By ED SAINSBURY United Pxm Inlernaiional Minneapolis, Minn. - (LTD - The American Football league beaded into its first drart meeting tooay in a state ox confusion. . League spokesmen spent much of their time Sunday denying reports that backers of the newly -formed AFL's Minneapolis - St. Paul fran chise were pulling out. Charles Johnson, executive sports editor of the ivlinne apolis Star and Tribune, said a local AFL franchise was withdrawing to accept a fran chise for. 19b0 in the National Football league. The report was denied by Lamar hunt, holder of the American league's Dallas franchise, and principal or ganizer of the AFL. ' The league picked eight players as initial draft choices at a meeting Sunday night attended by representatives of the eight cities holding franchises - Boston, Buffalo, Dallas, .uenver, Houston, Los Angeues, Hew Yjrk and Min neapolis. ' : .' ikunneapolis 'selected Dale Hackoan, Wisconsin quarter back, as a arait choice. . The league Sunday decided to abandon its projected "ter ritorial" drait for the time being. Hunt said the league hopes to begin the territorial draft in time for the 19&1 campaign. Other selections made Sun day night were: Boston-Gerhardt Schwedes, Syracuse halfback. Buffalo-Richie Lucas, Perm State quarterback. Dallas - Don Meredith, Southern Methooist quarter back. Denver-Rodger Le Clerc, Trinity College center. Houston - Billy, Cannon, Louisiana S t a t university halfback. Los Angeles - Monte Stick les, Notre Dame end. , New York -George Izo, Notre Dame halfback. Both teams took a big step in that general direction Sun day and TJnitas and Conerly were the ones who led the way. Unitas threw two touch down passes and scored once himself in a 45-14 victory over San Francisco that boosted Baltimore into a first place tie with the Forty-Niners in the Western' division. Faced with the prospect of losing all chance to retain the league title they won from the Giants last December, the Colts ran up their highest score of the season, causing San Francisco Coach Red Hickey to comment he felt "like a freight train just ran over me." ".. Conerly had much the same affect on the Chicago Cardi nals. Limping on a sprained ankle, the veteran 38-year-old Conerly fired two touchdown passes and had a hand in a third as the Giants licked the Cards, 30-20, at Minneapolis and climbed one game in front of the Eastern Division race with a 7-2 record. The Browns now have a 6-3 record, the same as the Phila delphia Eagles, who defeated the Los Angeles Rams, 23-20. The Chicago Bears kept their faint Western Division hopes alive with a 24-14 triumph over the Detroit Lions, and Green Bay snapped a , five- game losing streak by wal loping Washington, 21-0. Colt Coach Weeb Ewbank, happily declaring "we are now back in the fight," said his world champions "played their best game of the sea son" against the Forty-Nihers. Unitas was largely respon sible. He provided Baltimore with -a 7-0 lead in the second quarter when he capped an 80-yard drive by plunging over from the one yard lme, then threw scoring passes to Ray Berry and Lennie Moore. The two TD's increased his season total to 24 and ran his all-time league record of con secutive games in which he has thrown touchdown passes to 34. The Colts and Forty Niners both sport 6-3 records and meet again at San Fran cisco, Dec. 5. Conerly,- whose injured ankle kept him sidelined the past twoweeks, tossed touch down passes of 33 and 45 yards in the second period, he lateraled to Frank Gifford, who hit Alex Webster with a 37-yard scoring pass. The TD's were the first for the Giants in 10 periods. Bobby Layne led Pitts burgh to its victory over favored Cleveland when he passed .17. yards to . Vern Nagler with 41 seconds re maining and then calmly kicked his third extra point of the game., Layne's last minute dramatics - he beat the. Giants with only 89 sec onds to go last week - took the play away from Cleve land's Milt Plum who had tossed three TD passes to Ray Renfro. A . missed con-j version attempt by Lou Gro za turned out to be the margin of Pittsburgh's victory. Field Goals Win Three field goals by. Paige Cotheren, his last with 16 seconds left, gave the Eagles their win over the Rams. Cothren was cut loose by the Rams and picked up as a free agent by the Eagles five weeks ago. He tied Sunday's game with an 1 8-yard field goal in the second period, put the Eagles in front with a 40 yarder in the same period, and won the game" with a 14-yard placement after Lou Michaels had booted a 38-yarder to tie the score for the Rams. The Bears . capitalized on three Detroit fumbles to beat the Lions. Fumbles by Terry Barr and Earl'Morrall helped the Bears to their first two touchdowns, scored by Willie Galimore Tittle May Miss Game On Sunday Baltimore, Md. (UPD Troubles piled up a bit more for the San Francisco Forty Niners today when they were informed that Y.A. Tittle, their No. 1 quarterback, prob ably will be unavailable for next Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns. It was a bad day all around for the Firty Niners Sunday. They were crushed, 45-14, by the Baltimore Colts who thus moved into a first place tie with them in the Western Division of the Natonal Foot ball League, and Tittle suf fered torn muscle fibers in his right knee late in the final period. "Tittle probably won't play next week, said Dr. Erwin Mayer, the Colts' team physi cian who examined him at Union Memorial hospital. "But it doesn't look like he will be out for the season. I know Tittle. He's an old friend." No Bone Fracture Dr. Mayer said that x-ray pictures showed negative and that there was no fracture. "There may be some liga ment injury in addition to the muscle fibers, however," he added. San Francisco coach Red Hickey was understandably dejected following Sunday's loss to the Colts, who ran up their highest score of the sea son. "1 feel like a freight train just ran over me," Hickey said. "The Colts were ready for us. They were up higher than a kite. "When we came to Baltimore we were ready for a fight, but we did not expect to be treated like this." There was one ray of sun shine for the Forty Niners and Hickey pointed it out. "We're still in the first place," he said. Tied With The Colls Johnny Unitas threw two touchdown passes for Bal timore and extended his rec ord of consecutive games in which he tossed at least one TD pass to 34. Hugh McElhenny took a Tittle screen pass on his own 17 and set up San Francisco's first TD with a 72-yard run, while halfback Jerry Mar tens scored the losers' final touchdown when he raced 27 yards with an intercepted pass in the third quarter. Philadelphia-flJPD - The cel lar - dwelling Los Angeles Rams round out their disas trous three-game road trip Sunday at Baltimore against the Colts who with the San Francisco Forty Niners are tied for first place in the Na tional Football league's West ern division. The Rams, highly touted be fore the season, collected their fifth straight loss Sun day at the hands of the Phila delphia Eagles and two form er Rams, Norm Van Brocklin and Paige Cothren. Coach Sid Gilmore's chanc es of hanging onto Tiis job appeared slimmer than ever after the thrilling 23-20 defeat before a crowd of 47,425 fans. It was the second largest crowd to turn out for . the Eagles in the team's history. Gillman had engineered Van Brocklin's trade and also had argued this season that he could not take a chance on Cothren who had a gimpy leg.. , ... ..... . Cothren was picked up as a free agent five weeks ago by the Eagles and Sunday he booted three field goals, the last brie just 16 seconds be fore the game's end to give the Eagles the winning mar Van Brocklin put the crimps on a determined Los Angeles drive in the fourth period when the visitors vaulted from a 10-20 trailing position to a 20-20 tie on a 26-yard .scoring pass from quarterback Bill Wade to Jim Phillips and a 38-yard tying field goal by Lou Michaels with just five minutes left. Van Brocklin completed three hefty passes good forj 80 yards to move the ball from the Eagles' 11 during the last 90 seconds to the Rams' seven. Cothren was then called in and booted the winning field goal. Van Brocklin threw 38 pas ses and completed 19 of them, good for 278 yards compared with 9 completed out of 23 tries by his former under study Wade. The Los Angeles quarterback managed to gain only 90 of the total 133 yards gained in the air by the visit ors. Frank Ryan threw seven and completed three for the rest of the Ram aerial yard age. Jon Arnett gave a thrilling 80-yard runback after being handed the ball by Wade in the first period. This was reported by a "private enter prise" research team, the York Peptic Ulcer Research Trust. Led by Dr. Charles Pulver taft, radiologist to New York City and county hospitals, the research team made a survey of more than 2,600 ulcer sufferers.' Of this number, 1,400 had already been oper ated on for ulcers,, and the remainder were known to suffer from them. All the people investigated live in and around York, the small city of Roman origin in the north of England. This gave the team the opportuni ty to investigate patients who live m urban and rural areas. Fewer Ulcers The researchers found, - in general, that there were few er ulcers among top-ranking business ,men than among lower paid people doing rou tine and often unimportant jobs. 'The idea of the 'executive ulcer' as the exclusive prop erty of the big business man keeping his nose too hard to the grindstone is out," Dr. Pulvertaft said. His researchers found that shift-workers are particularly ulcer-prone. Worst of all, it seems, are people who, due to their work, go without food for more than five hours in the afternoon. Or just eat sandwiches. And they found too that ulcers are "not un common among children." Summing up, Dr. Pulvertaft said that he was not convinced on the evidence available that stress is the dominant gry Rams their first victory in five weeks. But Philadelphia marched 84 yards in 11 plays with Clarence Peaks going wide from the three for the tying touchdown. The Eagles moved ahead before the half ended on a 40-yard field goal by Cothren. Van Brocklin hit Tommy McDonald with a 25-yard pass in the third period, but Mc Donald fumbled at the goal line and the ball bounced free in the end rone. Eagle Gerry Huth recovered for the final Eagle TD. factor in producing ulcers," May Find Key The researchers think they may. have found the key to the secret of ulcers in the diets of city dwellers as dis tinct from country, people. There are more ulcers in towns. Previous researchers have thought this was due to the greater stress of city life. But Dr. Pulvertaft's team has found that city people eat more sugar than country folk. Investigations are now being made into the effect of the "sugar factor" on the body. - The York team thinks that their reserch reverses the usual cigarette smoking-ulcer theory. Smoking is usually indicated as the cause of ulcers. Dr. Pulvertaft's re searchers think it much more likely that it is having ulcers that makes people smoke heavily. ... The research has been con ducted as a private investiga tion by a trust sponsored by a group of Yorkshire family doctors and local health au thorities without financial support from the Medical Re search Council or Britain's Welfare State National Health Service.
