The teams will fight it out, like they did last year, for the state championship. I Defending Jefferson, which fca made a habit of white Washing its adversaries, (shocked over David Douglass JJ-O. Medford romped to a 42-6 win over South Salem. 5 The only other prep foot fcall action Friday was Yon- tealla's Class B quarterfinal nod, 99-20, over Knappa at feoseburg. MEDFORNaTlINn sipaDmnrs School Board Asks Saturday Play of Grid Title Scuffle With the support and ap peal of Black Tornado foot ball fans, the Medford school board and administrative staff has made a request to the Oregon School Activities as sociation that the Medford Jefferson High school state championship football game at Multnomah stadium in Portland be set for Saturday rather than for Friday. It is pointed out that Satur day scheduling would enable a larger number of Medford residents to attend. Jobs and the. great distance to Portland makes it highly inconvenient for many and impossible for others from his area to travel to a Friday night champion ship encounter. .L'ester Harris, Medford High school principal, yester day telephoned the appeal to A. O fl e n Hawes, Portland, secretary-treasurer of the Ore gon School Activities associa tion. Hawes said thathe would poll members of the OSAA board of control beginning at 10 a.m. Monday. A decision is anticipated later Monday 'morning. . . The secretary was inclined to agree t with the Medford point of view, Harris stated. He reported Hawes' thinking that the board would be quite receptive to the Medford view and plea. Petition Signed The school officials' request pointed to the inconvenience of Friday night to Medford supporters and to the fact that Medford followers have al ready had' to travel far on two Friday nights already this month to see playoffs. " Petitions for Saturday night play have been signed by more than 200 ' ardent follow ers of Southern Oregon foot ball teams" who object to Fri day night championship elimi nation action. The petition says, "Weleel tnat tne large following of these teams mer its the holding of elimination and championship games on Saturday in order that more people from Southern Oregon may attend. No plea has been made for Friday play. " No actual directive has been seen absolutely setting the A-l title mix for Friday However, the Friday night date- has been "understood Games of the past few years have been ; that night. The OSAA calendar in its Septem- ,ber and October bulletins lists either Friday or Saturday for the clash. Harris also said that 1,000 adult tickets are to be sent for sale here. A total of 750 student tickets have been, re quested. Just when tickets can go on sale here is not known. Definite information may be available Monday. It will mark the 15th time these two clubs , have met in opening season ceremonies. The other six teams in" the circuit play their inaugural games the fol lowing day. s McCulloch Stadium, Salem - This Capital city football field on Friday night was a rain and wind-swept scene. But, the rampaging Medford High school Black Tornado from distant southern Oregon swooshed in to 'kick up a much more vicious gale. Coach Fred Spiegelberg's howling, hammering Hurri cane, with offense in- high gear, decisively thumped South Salem's Saxons for the second time this fall. It thun dered into the final playoff mix for Oregon's Class A-l gridiron mantle for the sec ond successive .year. Medford parlayed the long gain, the long march, a cou pie of key passes, the breaks and a 'delaying defensive game on sodden ''turf into convinc ing triumph. Score in the state -championship semifinal scuffle was 42 to 6. And, an 89-yard kickoff runback by Mike Hood for the Tornado was the thriller of the night. Retribution Chance - Victory gives the roaring Big Wind a chance for retri bution and to prove the No. 1 ranking pollsters have accord ed for 1959. It takes on. de fending champion Jefferson next Friday or Saturday at Multnomah stadium in Port land in the big school state title brush. Jeff's Demo's last year humbled Medford 21 to 7 in the A-l finale game. That's been the only loss over 23 tussles spanning tWo seasons for Black Tornado gridders. Jefferson lashed David Douglas 33; to 0 last Friday in the other semifinal scrap. Hood scored two other times here against the Saxons, on five and 31-yard runs while Skip Bennett crossed the goal on one and eight-yard shots. Len Griggs touchdowned on a two-yard smash. Medford made all its conversion tries. Bennett ran for three, Dick Ragsdale tossed to Dan Sieg and to Hood and Knight toed one placement kick. South Salem smashed much yardage and three times pene trated deep but could muster just one scoring punch. The Saxons gained their touch down on a blazing explosive dash. Medford's Jerry An derson blocked the conversion kick by Salem's Lyle Tweet. Tide Turns ' That Saxon marker follow ed two Medford touchdowns and temporarily put -the Sa- lems back into the game. But, Capital city hopes tumbled as the Big Wind scored again before halftime. After Hood's second half kickoff runback the tide definitely had turned Medford led 14 to 6 at the quarter and 21 tp 6 at the half. imra perioa status . was to 6. The Black Tornado began point making after the open ing kickoff by driving 77 yards. A 34-yard coffin cor ner kick by Lynn Knight and a fumble recovery by Jerry Winetrout set up the second counter. Next came Sawyer's TD run for Salem. Then Med ford moved 62 yards for an other score. After Hood's 89- yarder with the help of a well set screen, Medford promenaded 88 yards for touchdown No. 5. A South Salem punt which actually lost a yard paved the way for a close out score. On the ninth play after Medford took - the opening kickoff the first touchdown went up on the scoreboard. Hood swept the weak side, on a pitch and rounded five'yards to the goal. Ragsdale's pass to Sieg on a fake kick got the extra point. Jerry Anderson's tumbling' snare of a Ragsdale heave covered 22 yards and gave impetus to the drive. Sieg chugged on tries of 16 and 24 yards as the Tornado journeyed deep into Saxon Runback South Salem's first scrim mage turn made little head way and Steve Stewart punt ed to Medford's IKen Durkee on the Tornado 20-yard line. Durkee reversed to Ragsdale who ran the ball back 41 yards to the Salem 39 and with the aid, of a forward fumble which Bennett saved. Three plays made just three yards. Knight's only punteof the night went for 34 yards and out of bounds on the Sax on two. " Ed Swearingen ran five for South but Kim Clark fumbled on the eight and Winetrout nabbed the ball. Bennett slash ed right tackle the full eight to the end zone and also ran the conversion try.' ,.. A 26-yard kickoff runback by Durkee put the Tornado on its 38 tp begin another touch down spree? Six plays later, Hood got a gap through the Salem forwards and another fine block py Lowell Dean. He got out of the arms of a would be tackier and rambled 31 yards to the TD zone. Ben nett got over the goal on the conversion run but a penalty put it back to the seven for another try. Ragsdale passed successfully to Hood to assure the added point. , Strategy Backfires ; A bit of Salem strategy backfired on the second half's starting play. The Saxons had won the pre-game toss and elected to kick to Medford, utilizing the heavy breeze. Medford had its choice for the second half and determined to receive. Hood took the ball on the eleven, looped to the Irft side of the turf, A terrific block by Anderson took out a Salemite who was knocked into another Saxon player. This enabled Hood to turn the corner and get advantage of the screen set up by Gordon Pathman, Keith Berg, Pat McLaughlin, John Frohnmayer and John James. With this help the Medford halfback outran the opposition although he labor ed at the end. Bennett ran this extra. Medford " accumulated .six first downs on the long push to its second touchdown in the third stanza. Two eleven-yard runs by Bennett and 25 and 17-yard gains by Hood livened the 10-play surge. A diving ,desperate catch by Hood of a Ragsdale throw made a 10 yard gain to the three. Sieg dove to the one and Bennett slanted right across the -final line then made another con-i verting run. Bad Kick in Wind A punt by Salem's Ralph Fletcher, a poor kick caught! by the wind, on fourth down lost a yard and Medford took over on the Saxon -22. Bill Charley hit for two yards and Griggs on -a pitchout skirted! end 18 yards to the two. j Griggs hit right guard to score and Knight . thumped his extra. South Salem penetrations got to the Medford 15-yard line, to the six and to the 22. The first to the 15 in the late second quarter moved from the Saxon 28 in 14 plays. A pass try went incomplete whep end John King's back was turned. Swearingen lost a yard When he couldn't get off a throw and a heave to Dale Meyers got just a yard. The Tornado took over on downs and the half time ran out. In the third quarter the Sax ons marched from their 34 to the Tornado six in 13 ground maneuvers. Swearingen chucked to King, who could have scored, but there was trouble with the timing and the wind. Next Swearingen, trying to pass, was smothered for a nine-yard loss and Tor nado Reggie Breeze recovered his fumble. Griggs Gains Thirty yards of penalties on South Salem offset 10-yards assessed on Medford and Len Griggs had 16 and 14-yard sweepg. The Tornado moved to the SS 25. Charley ripped ahead for nine yards but fum bled. Woody Bennett fell on the ball for Salem to spoil the drive. George Clearwater lcicked the ball into the end zone after the final Medford score. South Salem sallied from its 20 to the Medford 22. Bob Quinney broke up a pass in tended for King ' and one to Meyers was incomplete. A final pass was intercepted with seven seconds left. There was some grandstand second guessing in the second quarter when Medford got the ball on the SS 36 after a short Stewart punt. Three plays gained eight yards and with fourth down and two to go a surprise element was in jected with a pass rather than a running play. The aerial was incomplete and the Tor nado lost the ball. Delaying Game . Whiles. Tornado offense worked wonders, defense was the fluid kind which firmed up in the clutch. The attack was a source of elation for Spiegelberg and his staff of mentors. But, he said, "we were a little disappointed with the defense. The defense left a SUM. The head coach 'also ex pressed the sentiments of all of Medford when he declared, "I'm real proud of the kids." Most prognostic at ors thought the game would be much tougher than early in October when the Black Tor nado dumped the Saxons 39 to 6. But, where in the early fracas Medford passing made it a decisive battle, this time the Tornado stuck mainly and effectively to the turf. Com pleting two of 'four regular scrimmage passes and adding the two for extra points. In Its' Element Driving, soaking rain fell and wind blew with gusts up to 38 miles. per hour before the game. But the Black Tor nado functioned well despite the wind and slippery wet. It was just in its figurative element. Hood paced the evening rushing with his 101 yards in nine times with the ball. Ben nett ran 61 for 11, Griggs 57 for six and Sieg 55 for nine. For Salem Sawyer had 81 for 8 and Meyers 63 for 10. Medford had 291 yards rushing to South's 232. The Tornado snapped a six game Saxon winning string. South Salem finished football with ,an eightwin, three-loss record with two defeats at the hands of Medford. The six straight victories were be tween the Medford games. Apparently the Tornado came through without injur ies and should be well set for the Jefferson game. (DPD - Half back George Usry's 73-yard run with an intercepted pass set up a touchdownthat car ried Clemson to a 33-31 vic tory over Wake Forest and the Atlantic Coast conference championship Saturday. The winning core came with just four minutes left to play -and Wake Forest was lead ing 31-27. Usry himself scored the touchdown, plunging over yardsfrom two yards out. Un til that point, Wake Forest had held a slender lead through most of the wide open, free-scoring contest be fore 34,000 fans. Gun For Tie The Demon Deacons, gun ning for at least a tie for the ACC title, scored first and in spectacular fashion as half back Bobby Robinson inter cepted a Clemson pass on his 31 and raced 69 yards. In the third period, Wake fullback Neil Maclean set a new conference record by taking a pass from( quarter back Norman Snead and run ning 7 yards to the Clemson 11. It was a record for a non scoring pass reception. It was the second straight ACC gridiron title for Clem son, 0-7 losers to LSU in last year's Sugar bowl.
