Nov. 22, 1959 Teaching Aids Topic, For PTA Audio-visual aids used in Medford schools were de scribed by Oliver Erickson, reading clinic teacher, at a meeting of Lincoln . Parent Teacher association Nov. 12. j The program followed an open house in the classrooms, where teachers greeted par ents and others interested. Work done by thet children and books and teaching aids were displayed in observance of American Education Week. To demonstrate the tape re corder, Mr-Erickson recorded two numbes sung by a group of parents and teachers, and then played the numbers back to the audience. He discussed reading, stat ing that 80 per cenf of the children "are successful read ers. Mr. Erickson declared that the responsibility for valuable experiences in read ing readiness lay with the parents. He urged parents to find the reasons behind a child's abnormal behavior and to work for better under standing of children. Audio-visual aids discussed were the Keystone Telebinoc- ular, the Tachistoscope, the Controlled Reader and film strips. Lincoln school' owns malty nun n.iit'j v been purchased by the PTA. Regional Study Of Columbia Printed Again The regional study of the water resources of the Colum bia Basin, "The Great River of the West," recently pub lished by the League of Wom en Voters of Oregon, Washing ton, Montana, and Idatio has gone into a second printing, Mrs. J. S. Benjamin, Eugene, chairman of the League's 4 state Columbia Basin Commit tee has announced. The new printing brings the total pub lished to 9,000 copies. "We feel that the fast sales of the booklet are, in a large measure, due to the need for factual, non-partisan informa tion on the complex problems pertaining, to the water re sources of the Columbia Ba sin," Mrs. Benjamin saidi The 32 - page illustrated booklet came out in late September. It deals with water use, con trol, and abuse in the Colum bia Basin. It describes exist ing patterns of allocating ben efits, responsibilities and costs for, water resources develop ment by local, state, federal, and international agencies. Five choices for achieving re gional development of the basin are presented. A 7-color map of the present basin de velopment supplements the text. , ' " League members - in the states of Oregon, Washington, Montana, and Idaho have been using the booklet as back ground material for their par ticipation in the nationwide effort on the part of the League to support those na tional water policies and prac tices which promote coordi nated administration, equita ble financing, and regional or river basin planning. Mrs. Clifford Wolff Shows Iris Slides Mrs. Clifford Wolff showed slides of different iris types at a meeting of the Southern Oregon Iris society Tuesday, November' 17, at the home of Dr. and Mrs. K. C. Farley, Jacksonville highway. . Mrs. Ray Coleman, vice president, was in charge of the meeting. Mrs. Robert W. Roark, Grants Pass, was ap pointed chairman of the nom inating committee. The tea opened the club's campaign for CARE aid for Greece, and the project will con tinue through December 3. Thanksgiving Ceremony to Aid G ARE A candlelight ceremony for CARE will mark the Thanks giving meeting of Travel Study club, of the Oregon Fed- eratipn of Women's clubs.( Mrs. Clay M. Lee, president of the club, will light the first candle in a special Thanksgiv ing program observance. This is dedicated to sending CARE "self help ' to people around the world. The candle-lighting ceremo ny will be held at the club's meeting Tuesday November 24, at 1 p.m. at the home of Mrs. John L. Mansfield, 1615 Crater Lake avenue as part of national "We Count Our Blessings" program which will originate at the General Federation of Women's Clubs headquarters in Washington, D. C. Each participating mem ber will make a contribution to the current General Fede ration CARE campaign, which seeks to provide tools and equipment to help people help themselves. Throughout the nation, 16,000 Federated clubs are participating by holding similar Thanksgiving observ ances during November. "We believe that the best way to give thanks for Am erica's blessings is to give help, and .hope, to others," Mrs. Lee said. "Above all, by helping people to help them selves, we feel we are bring ing closer the time when they, too, will enjoy plenty, when our children, and theirs, can live together in friendship and peace. The candle-lighting program has been planned primarily for our members, but we will warrftly welcome the support of anyone who may wish to join us by mak ing a Thanksgiving contribu tion to the CARE campaign." Mrs. Edith Swartsley will give a program on Alaska, be fore the candlelight ceremony. Travel Study club's cam paign to collect funds for CARE opened Tuesday after noon with a tea at Girls Com munity club. Since the Feder atin .funds are being sent this year to Greece, a number of southern Oregon residents who are natives of Greece, or are of Greek descent, were guests. Also present was Mayor- John Snider. 'Speaking briefly were Mrs. Murray Gardiner, Mrs. Don Waldron, Mrs. Don P. McNeil, and A. Davis, all Medford, and Theodore Avgeris, Colestine. It was -said that the Greeks 'are a peaceful, hard-working people but that the country is poor in natural resources. Mr. Davis pointed out that because of its smallness and strategic location, Greece has been in vaded and despoiled many times. All stressed that the Greeks are extremely grate ful for aid from other coun tries. Pouring at the tea were Mrs. J. D. Brummond, Mrs. Carl Peterson, Ashland, Fed eration district chairman; Mrs. Clay M. Lee, club president; Mrs. William E. Boone, Mrs. Marvin Nelson and Mrs. Edith Swartsley. . ' The tea table centerpiece was of bronze and yellow chrysanthemums and wheat stalks.
