HHumbofldt Mines ver Kecfl Haiders Ashland Gordon Carrigan put on a one-man football how lor Southern Oregon college but Humboldt State came from behind to beat the Raiders 20 to 7 Saturday night here on Fuller field. Carrigan nabbed eight of the Raiders nine completed passes and picked up 14 yards on an end around reverse play to total 139 yards for the evening., . The game closed out the 1959 Southern Oregon college football season , with a 4-5 record and a second place in Oregon Collegiate conference. Freshman Doyle Bransom put the Raiders into an early 7 to 0 lead when he scored from five yards out on a sweep around the left end. Phil Swisher booted the extra point and there was 3:09 re maining in the first quarter. Midway through the second period, Humboldt's Lumber jacks got back six of the points when Cecil Stevens capped a 71 yard drive with a three-yard off tackle slant. Drive 72 Yards SOC's slim halftime lead lasted until Humboldt got its hands on the ball by taking the second half kickoff. The California 'Jacks drove 72 yards in 15 plays to take the lead when Fred Whitmire passed three yards to Darol Foster and Jim, Walker boot ed the conversion. Humboldt had to come through in the clutch on this drive when they had a fourth down situation with eight yards, to go. Whitmire again passed to Manuel Vasquz for 12 yards and the first down that set up the touchdown. An Intercepted pass set up the third tally for Humboldt late in the third period when Walker .intercepted one of Jack Brown's aerials and re turned It 28 yards to the Raid ers' 27 yard line. - It took six plays for Hum boldt in the short drive to the goal and again it was Foster on the receiving end of Whit mire's pass for the touchdown. San Francisco Forty Niner fans were mulling over one of last year's most controversial subjects - the presence or ab sence of quarterbacks Y. A. Tittle and John Brodie. Rookie head coach Red Hickey, a man who could do no wrong in winning six of his first seven starts this sea son, threw open the door for fan criticism Sunday. Hickey yanked veterap sig nal caller Y. A. Tittle after five plays against the. Chicago Bears, - and the San - Fran ciscans went on to their sec ond defeat of the season, 14-3. The loss cut San Francisco's Western division lead to one game,, as Baltimore edged closer with a "28-24 victory Sunday over Green Bay. The Forty Niners tangle head-on with the defending pro champs next Sunday at Balti more. Worst Day For Tittle "Tittle had one of his worst days of the season and so did the rest of the team, and we got beat," said a solemn Hick ey after Sunday's loss. Hickey indicated that he was less than pleased with the work of Tittle's replace ment, John Brodie. Brodie played the remainder of the day at quarterback, with the exception of the final minutes of the game. , The stint was the first of the season for Brodie at quar terback. Brodie had three passes in tercepted and Tittle tossed away two. A rough and tum ble Bear defensive unit push ed San Francisco's offense around the icy field most of the afternoon, as the Forty Niners were kept from scor ing a touchdown for the first time in 18 games. In addition to losing five interceptions, the Forty Ni ners lost three fumbles to the hard-charging Bears. The vic tory gave Chicago a 4-4 sea son mark and kept them in outside contention for the Western crown. San Fran cisco is now 6-2 and Baltimore is 5-3. San Francisco's only touch down yesterday, a brilliant run by J. D. Smith, was called back because of a clipping penalty. Casper Takes Lafayette Open Lafayette, La. (UPD - Billy Casper Jr. fired a two-under-par 69 Sunday to easily win the second annual Lafayette Open golf tournament. He had an 11-under-par total of 273 for the four days of play. Casper, a 26-year-old PGA star from Apple Valley, Calif., never was seriously threaten ed after he took the halfway lead in the $15,000 event. He won by four strokes over George Bayer of Glenagle, 111., who finished with a'68 for a 277 total. Tied for third place were Jim Ferree of Crystal River, Fla., .and Billy Maxwell, of Odessa, Tex., with 278s. Gay Brewer Jr. of Crystal River, Fla., held down fifth place with 281, while Bill Johnston of Provo, Utah, was "in sixth with 282. Bayer came from fourth to take over the runner-up spot by posting his best ..round of the tournament. However, the two best rounds of the day were scored by BobGobi of Crystal River, Fla., and Ar nold Palmer, of Ligonier, Pa. They shot 67s to come from far back and tie for seventh, along with Frank Wharton, of Dallas, Tex. The" trio had a 283 total. The Boston Celtic flash ne ver looked better than he did Sunday night when he poured in 38 points in a 134-128 vic tory over the Cincinnati Roy als. Cousy, high scorer for the game, scored 23 points in the second - half as the Celtics chalked up 42 points in the third quarter and widened their Eastern division lead in the National Basketball asso ciation. Bill Sharman netted 35 points for the Celtics, who now have beaten the Royals 11 straight times over two seasons. Lakers Win The Minneapolis Lakers emerged from the Western division cellar with a 106-100 triumph over- the Philadel phia Warriors. Dick Garmak er was high man for the Lak ers with 23 points followed by Elgin Baylor with 21. Paul Arizin and Wilt Cham berlain each scored 26 points for the Warriors, who drop ped games behind the pace-setting Celtics Gene Shue scored 26 points to lead the Detroit Pistons to a 103-94 victory over the New York Knickerbockers. The victory was the Pistons' third straight and the loss was New Yorks' fifth in a row. De troit, ahead all the way, led by 24 points early in the last period and, then had to with stand a last-ditch rally by the Knicks to win. Buffalo, N. The perfectly-executed toss, against a defense that had not permitted a touch down since it last faced Layne Oct. 25, produced a costly de feat for the Giants. Like Browns of Old . The Browns, looking more and more like the Cleveland teams that have dominated pro football since World War II, took quick advantage of Layne's assist. With Bobby Mitchell open ing a three-touchdown spree with a 90 -yard run, the Browns made the Washington Redskins (3-5) their fifth straight victim, 31-17, and deadlocked the Giants for the Eastern division lead. How ever, the Brownies will know more about their feeling for Layne after they play the Steelers next Sunday at Cleveland. The Colts defending league champions, get a chance to tie the San Francisco Forty-Nin-ers (6-2) for the Western lead next Sunday at Baltimore. If they do, the Colts (5-3) will owe a vote of thanks to John ny Morris and the Chicago Bears. Colls Edge Packers Morris ran the opening kickoff 58 yards to set up a one-yard touchdown plunge by Rick Casares and caught a 51-yard scoring pass from Ed Brown to lead the Bears (4-4) to a 14-3 triumph over the Forty-Niners at Chicago. Bal timore, with John Unitas fir ing two scoring passes to Ray Berry and the decisive touch down toss to Jim Mutscheller, i took advantage of Chicago's help by edging the Green Bay Packers, 28 - 24. Baltimore started the day two games be hind San Francisco. The Philadelphia Eagles (5- 3) also benefited from Pitts burgh's triumph, moving 'with in a game of the Giants and Browns each (6-2) in the East by downing the Chicago Car dinals, 27-17. Wisconsin, Was h i n g t o n, Louisiana' State, Clemson and Missouri are favored to win the juciest plums - but the footballs have been, taking crazy bounces the last two weeks and the craziest may be yet to come: Six of the country's top 11 teams and eight of the top 20 were beat en in last Saturday's series of form reversals. Texas, beaten, 14-9 by Tex as Christian in one of the up sets which left Syracuse and Southern California the only major perfect - record teams, can. win a share of the. South west Conference title and the conference's Cotton Bowl bid opposite Syracuse by beating Texas A&ivi, .Nov. zo. A Washing ton loss and an Oregon (5-1) victory over Oregon State would give the berth to the Ducks. Sugar Bowl: Georgia (6-0) clinched its first Soutneasiern Conference title since 1948 when it beat Auburn, 14-13, Saturday but it is- a doubtful choice. Louisiana State (4-1) probably will get the host berth if it beats Tulane (0-4-1) LA Losses May Cost Coach Job Detroit - (UPD - Speculation ran high today that the Los Angeles Rams' fourth straight loss Sunday might cost coach Sid Gilman his job-but prob ably not before the end of the season. There was an abundance of Rani high brass and former brass at the error - studded game Sunday when the fav ored Rams were beaten 23-17 by the Detroit Lions before 52,271 fans. - The loss gave the Rams six losses and two wins for the season and dropped them to the ' bottom of the National Football league's Western di vision, occupied until Sun day by the Lions who moved into, fifth place with a record of two wins, five losses and a tie. Former Ram coaches Hamp Pool and Bob Snyder were at the game, apparently as spec tators, along with Ram own ers Fred Levy and president Dan Reeves. Both Levy and Reeves re peated statements that Gill- man would be on hand to call the shots in next Sunday's game at Philadelphia with the Eagles and for the rest of the season. The Rams poor showing this season so far' after the owners had expected a cham pionship team - could be part ly explained as due to Ram fumbles. The Rams lost the ball three times Sunday by fum bling, one of which the Lions capitalized on in the third period to tally the second of their two touchdowns. It'll be Ar kansas if Texas loses and Tex as if the Longhorns win. Tex as Christian can share in the conference crown but can't get the bid to the bowl. Gator Bowl: Clemson (5-1) can clinch the Atlantic Coast conference title by beating Wake Forest (3-2). Georgia, Penn State, Mississippi and Tennessee are other leading candidates on a list a mile long. ' .. (Chilly) Doy len, who covered the Pitts burgh Pirates for more than 40 years before retiring in 1958, died Sunday at 75. Doy- len who served as national president of the Baseball Writers Association of Amer ica in 1939, began his career as a sports writer for the Sharon Telegraph in 1915. He covered the Pirates for the old Pittsburgh Gazette-Times and later for the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph from 1916 through the 1957 season.
