M. 1959 MAIL TRIBUNE, Mtdfertf, Or. 7 Six-Cylinder Engine Making Comeback in Automobiles of 1960 Detroit (OPD - The six-cylin der engine, once scheduled for oblivion by 1962, is making a " comeback. , Not too many years ago the auto industry was openly dis cussing plans to convert all automobiles to V-8 engines by 1962. , But the current resurgence of popularity of the economi cal workhorse has led Chrys ler Corp. to invest thousands of dollars to design a com pletely new six-cylinder en gine. Chryslers new engine is slanted off to one side at 30 degrees to permit better fuel- air flow from the carburetor to the cylinders. First Major Revision The -new slanted six is the first major revision in the de sign of a six-cylinder engine since 1952, when Ford brought out the short stroke six, and only the fourth major change since Chevrolet first pioneered the basic design of the engine back in ia. Chrysler's work on the new six-cylinder engine shows that company's confidence in the future of six-cylinder power plants. In effect, Chrysler is betting thousands of dollars that the current trend toward : sixes will continue for quite a while in the future. Although, the new slant six iwas designed specifically for ! Chrysler's new Valiant, Alan G. Loofbourrow, director of i engineering, said it was de ' signed so it could "be used in ' the companrs larger cars too. Loofbourrow said the slant ; six weighs almost 100 pounds ' more than the engines on the other economy cars, largely because it was built with the future in mind. i " He said the drive shaft of v the slant six, for example, is almost twice as thick as that : of the Ford Falcon, engine Because of the added stur- ; dines- built into the slant six, i it can be bored out to develop up to 175 horsepower for use ' in the bigger cars. "No one can predict with any certainty where the buy- V ers 'will lead the auto indus try" in the future," Loofbur- : row said. But we wouldn t ' be building this engine with the heft needed for bigger car engines if we didn't feel i fairly certain that we will sell ' more six-cylinder engines in ; all kinds of cars for several ; years to come." '. Gamblo Appears Good Bel A recent report from Ward's : automotive reports, statistical : agency for the industry, made j the Chrysler gamble appear a j good bet. The statistical agency ' re , ported more than 40 per cent, ; or 1,500,000, of the low-priced model -car sales were cars I equipped with six-cylinder en gines. That's an increase of 5.2 . per cent from 1958. ' The six-cylinder engine be gan its march back to favor with the motorist in 1958. In 1957 six-cylinder engine sales hit an all-time low of only 16.8 per cent of the total in dustry sales. In the past two years, six cylinder engines have re claimed well over 10 per cent of their losses and compact car sales in the year ahead are expected to give the come back added impetus. The compacts alone could add another 15 per cent of the market to the six-cylinder engine's side of the ledger. 'Something' ir -Alfalfa Sought Baton Rouge, La. - (DPD -Scientists at Louisiana State University's a gri - chemical and bio-chemical laboratories are lookins for an elusive "something" in alfalfa that ain't exactly hay. Thev call it a "erowth fac tor" something they've known about for years, but have never isolated. It may eventually turn out to be a vitamin since " experiments with alfalfa extracts have stimulated growth in live stock and poultry.' Drs. Joseph A. Liuzza and Arthur Novak, biochemists, began trying to isolate it in 1952, when they discovered a soecies of mold grew as much as 200 per cent more when given vitamins in . ah alfalfa' base. The vitamins alone did not affect the mold. The results interested Dr. Alva B. Watts, head of Loui- siana State's poultry depart ment, who fed a concentrated alfalfa extra to chicks. Three tt lots showed these chicks gained , half a pound more than those not receiving tne extract.- -: Then Dr. Sam L. Hansard tried the extract on cows and found it increased cellulose digestion. . The researchers are now trvins to isolate the "some thing" and define it in cnem- ical terms. They plan furtner tests before placing it on tne market. ; Guests Evacuated : '? At Salem Hotel .
