And that's just what the San Fran cisco Forty Niners have done to the Los Angeles Rams. ' ;' Defense minded Forty Nin er coach Red Hickey, in his rookie year as a head pro mentor,, has certainly put the 'hex on the Rams. His Forty Niners returned home Sunday night with a 24-16 victory Over the Rams, and' a tighter grip on first place in the NFL's Western conference. The win sends San Fran cisco back east for a crucial three-game 'road trip . with a 6-1 record. Baltimore's Colts are now two games back in second place with a 4-2 mark, after losing Sunday to Wash ington, 27-24. . Broke Coliseum Jinx L Sunday's Forty Niner win woke a Coliseum jinx dating back to 1953, the last time San Francisco won in the huge Stadium. Earlier this season at Kezar Stadium, the Forty Niners shut out the Rams for the- first time in 10 years, 84-0. I 'Thi club will never panic again," said a proud Hickey Sunday nifht.. "We've got a bunch of pros now." - A Coliseum crowd of 94,376 watched the confident Forty Niners take Sunday's glories, Despite the fact that the Rams controlled the game statistic ally, San Francisco was ever present with the "big play" to put them on the scoreboard They also capitalized on breaks that all seemed to go their way. - - The Rams rolled up 28 first downs to San Francisco's 16, but lost possession four times by fumbles and once more on a pass interception. 105 Yard Kickoff Return - Abe Woodson's brilliant 105 -yard kickoff return for the final San Francisco touch down was the day's spectacu lar play. The touchdown push ed the Forty Niners to a 24-10 lead midway through the third quarter. Y. A. Tittle's 57-yard touch down oass to Billy Wilson gave San Francisco its 7-0 lead in the first period, and J. p. Smith plunged from the one -yard line in the second quarter to make it 14-0. Tit tle's "big gainer" pass to Wil son was thrown on the dead run, as it looked as if the veteran quarterback was go- inff to run. Rookie Tommy Davis addd both first half conversions and booted 21yard field goal in th second Quarter. A Ram field goal made it 17-3 at half time. : Ollie Matson climaxed a 92- yard Ram drive in the third period by driving one yard for the touchdown, bringing the home towncr to a 17-10 strut in distance. Woodson s run- rack hoisted the lead back to 24-10 a few seconds later how ever. Great Game For Ryan Reserve Quarterback Frank Ryan, who played an out standing game for the Rams, guided his club to anouicr fourth period TD, scoring it himself on a roll-out from the eight-yard line. Ram chances for a tie game were spoiled when Leo Nom ellini blocked Lou Michael's Mversion attempt with 2:50 remarking, giving San Fran cisco the 24-16 lead that held until the final gun. Nomel lini was awarded the game ball by his teammates. Coach Hickey once again praised a sturdy Forty Niner defense, both up front and in the secondary. Next Sunday the Forty Niners battle the Bears at Chicago. A week later they travel to Baltimore and then face the Cleveland Browns be fore returning home Dec. 5. will certify that anything can happen. But the Forty-Niners and Giants (both 6-1) top the division races and boast pow erful defenses to smooth their stretch drives. Baker's 46-yard field goal with only 11 seconds to play enabled the underdog Wash ington Redskins (3-4) to hand the Colts (4-3) their second straight defeat Sunday, 27-24. The Forty-Niners, with Wood son's 105-yard kickoff return the key play, took prompt ad vantage of Washington's help. They boosted their Western division lead over the Colts to two games by downing the Rams (2-5) at Los Angeles, 24-16. ' Field Goals Win Summerall's field goals of 37, 49 and 20 yards provided all of New York's points in a 9-3 triumph over the Chicago Cardinals (2-5) and kept the Giants a game ahead of the Cleveland Browns. The Browns (5-2) started ,the day tied with Philadelphia for sec ond in the East. They knocked the Eagles (4-3) two games off the pace with an easy, 28-7 victory at Cleveland. , Bobby Layne s 20 - yard scoring pass to Tom Tracy in the final minutes enabled the Steelers (2-4-1) to tie the De troit Lions (1-5-1) at Pitts burgh, 10-10. After a game with the Packers at Milwaukee, the Colts entertain the Califor nia clubs before playing them on the West Coast, where they have won only one game. Southern Oregon also gain ed a first period marker and won the non-league ruckus 34 to 6. The Raiders promenaded to the pay line on a 86-yard drive off the opening kick off. SOC went on to head the fray of fensively but 'that was the only tabulation until the first play of the final canto. Ash land collegians had three touchdowns before the Sav ages, for the only time, dented the Raider goal. Screen Pass Checks Allen Barnes crossed for the first touchdown on a per fect screen pass play. The Raiders let the Washington- ians pour through at SOC quarterback Jack Brown. He calmly flipped the ball over the surging white shirt horde. Barnes gathered in the ball and barged for the 34 yards. Phil Swisher toed his first of four out of first conversions A short EW punt by Jack England led the Raiders to their second six-point counter. SOC in the late third stanza had been thrown back to the nine after reaching the Sav age five yard line. Ron Van Home intercepted a Brown heave and carried from the end zone to the five. Three plays made only two yards and England kicked to the 26. Capping a six - play drive, Barnes made the last foot as the last period began and Swisher kicked for 14 to 0. Kick-Off Laugh Next came an amusing kick off incident "in which, Alfons Alt, trying an onsider, bare ly knocked over the ball. The officials gave the ball to the Raiders at the SOC 40 and Kerman Bennett started a TD drive with a 21 yard Vun to the Savage 39. (UPD Sharon Spencer, Oswego, Ore., has been chosen Queen of the Hawaiian day festival. The annual event is sponsored by Cypress Gardens in honor of the Hawaiian Islands. The 21-year-old Oregon state College " junior 'was crowned Sunday during the festivities. Miss Spencer was selected over runers-up Linda Kirby, Plant City, Fla., and Florence Cloud, Bradenton, Fla.
