Hedriclc 9th Victor Over McLoughlin Hedrick's Hornets, outplay tag their crosstown adversa ries , through the afternoon. thumped McLoughlin"27 to 0 Saturday afternoon in the "civil war" encounter be tween ninth grade grid elev ens of Medford Junior higns. The Hornets thereby wrap ped up an undefeated season to claim the unofficial cham pionship among southern Ore gon freshman teams. It was McLoughlin's only loss. Hedrick, scoring in the first auarter. headed 7 to 0 at the half and a third quarter touch down made it 14 to 0. The east siders got their TDs on 10 and 24-vard iaunts by Jim Bandy and on Danny Miles' passes to Roy Ross and Ban dy good for 18 and 24 respec tive yards. Gibb Mitchell ran over two conversions and Bandy skirted end for one Reach 25 McLoughlin mounted only one real offensive drive in which it lost the ball on downs on the Hedrick 25-yard line A pass interception by Mike Watkins gave the Bulldogs the ball once on the Hornet 35 but four plays netted just three yards. Hedrick had a sustained march to reach the McLoughlin t h r e e. It was thrown back to the Bulldog gix then a Ron Calkins' pass interceotion in the end zone ended the east side threat. Breaks set up two Hornet touchdowning efforts and just plain, drives produced the oth ers. The first TD followed Mitchell's recovery of Calkins muff on a Hedrick punt. Mitchell grabbed the loose ball on the McLoughlin 41 yard line and ran across the goal. The run was not allowed because Calkins had not ac tually controlled the ball but Hedrick got possession on the 41. . " A penalty put the ball back on the 48 but Miles heaved to Bandy for 36 yards to the 10. Bandy reached the goal around right end from there 68 Yard Push In the third quarter Hedrick took over on its 32 and in 10 plays with the aid of a 15 yard McLoughlin infraction reached the end zone. This score was on the Males to Calkins pass. John Mee in the fourth canto blocked and re covered a Frank Van Pelt of McLoughlin Dunt and the Hor nets nabbed possession on the Mac 12. The Miles to Bandy touchdown stage was set. In the waning minutes the Hedricks tallied on an eight play 46-yard drive with the pay-off on Bandy s 24-yard run. The . Hornets paced in first downs 11 to 4 and in net yard age 255 to 97. Hedrick had 163 vards rushing and 92 through the air while the Mc Loughlin figures were 83 and 14, respectively. The Bulldogs had some substantial gains like a 21-yard run by Calkins, 13 and nine keeper advances bv Mike Neathemr and an 11- yarder by Lowery but minus yardage hacked the total. Gary Griffin led the Hornet defensive effort and Lowery did the same for the west side team. OILMAN DIES Teague, Tex. (DPD Na tionally prominent oilman W R, Bill Boyd, 74, died in his sleep Friday.
