Scrambling on the ground are GP's Glen Davis,, in white, and the Black Phoenix Trims Sutherlin For Honors in District 6 Phoenix - Phoenix High school's Pirates ruled as Dis trict 6 A-2 football titlists by fighting by Sutherlin 25 to 19 here Friday night in a south north division play-off game. Mike Reese pitched a 39- yard pass to Dan Lumley with just over four minutes re maining in the game to give Phoenix its victory margin. The touchdown broke a 19-all deadlock. By the verdict the Pirates advance against Junction City in a state quarter-final fray next Friday or Saturday in ' the Willamette Valley town. Phoenix, champ of the Rogue league, overcame a 7 to 0 first quarter deficit to lead at halftime 12 to 7 over the Sutherlin aggregation. Then the Umpqua league i.winners came -back in - the- third canto to go. in front 13 to 12i The Pirates forged back on top 19 to 13 but Sutherlin fought back to knot the score. The Pirates moved back 63 yards in two plays off the fol lowing kick off for their in itial score which came at the start of the second chukker. Gary Colfax's 22-yard kick-off run put the ball on the Phoe nix 37. After Leon Small tried end for four yards, Dan Lumley took the ball on a perfect executed reverse and went 59 yards without being touched. Sam Walls' kick for the extra point was blocked. A Mike Consbruck punt re turn of 16 yards to the Phoe nix 36 touched off the- next TD march. He gained a yard from scrimmage. Then Small went over right guard and cut back to run 59 yards to the Bulldog four-yard line. Coming up on the scene but barely visible in the background of night are Medford players, Dennis Jensen (60) and Terry Earl (67). The recovery gave the Tornado the ball on the Caveman 36-yard line. Nine plays later, Medford crossed the GP goal for a,27 to 0 lead. Medford won the game 41 to 7 and with it the loop title. Small took a hand-off and drove through for the score. Trimmer gained five around end. Dave Mansfield went to the ten on a 25 yard run, Trimmer picked up one then Stillwell went to the one yard line and blasted over on the next play. After the Bulldog score the Pirates controlled the ball for only three plays before Baker had to" punt. Small cli maxed the drive by going off guard from the one yard line. Reese passed to Lumley for the bonus. Game Tied Sutherlin- then toured 62 yards in eight plays for the tying touchdown. Trimmer picked up 11 yards in two plays, Stillwell ran for 11, Trimmer gained 13 more in two plays and then Mans field went 26 yards t6 the Pi rate one yard line. Stillwell went up the middle for the counter. Stillwell's run for the bonus failed. The Pirates took the kick off, and traveled 44 yards in three plays. Lumley ' and Small each gained four yards. Reese then passed to Lumley who caught, the ball on the 20 yard line and out-ran the de fenders for the winning touch down. A pass by Reese for the extra was broken up. In the statistics the Pirates picked up 322 yards from, scrimmage and the Bulldogs gained 225. The Bulldogs led in first downs 14 to 11. November Traffic Claims Five Lives Salem - (DPD - Five persons nave been killed in Oregon traffic accidents - so far this month compared with seven at this time in November of 1958, the State .Traffic Safety Division reported Saturday. Medford high's whirlwind touchdown juggernaut struck first with lightning sudden ness then turned to its power and a barrage of passing to sweep over the burly Grants Pass Cavemen 41 to 7 here Friday night in the final league and district struggle in 1959 football for both schools. It means a trip to Coos Bay to tackle Marshfield next Friday night. For a triumph in the loop finals Coach Fred Spiegel berg's Tornado combined tre mendous defense with a smashing offense which sput tered at times'but still picked up piles of yardage. Grants Pass netted 3ust 57 yards from scrimmage, just 29 on the ground, while Medford total ed a massive 475. It's second scrimmage play of the evening produced a touchdown for the Black Tor nado which sprang Mike Hood loose around left end for an electrifying 67 yard jaunt. Medford also went to touch downs the next three times it got the ball. It marched the second half kickoff back to the GP goal and tallied last in the fourth panel on one of: three TDs manufactured from a break. Hood and Skip Bennett each tabulated twice for Med ford and Lowell Dean and An derson got the other scores with Bennett added two extra points and Danny Sieg one conversion on runs and Lynn Knight thumping two bonus points. Coach Mel Ingram's Cave men never pushed beyond the Medford 48-yard line in their offensive thrusts and their single touchdown came on a startling break. Jim Purkett snatched up a Ray Konopasek fumble and dashed 30 yards to score. Larry Janssen thumped the extra pointed. Medford passing proved ef fective despite the low 23-6 thtow-completion ratio at tributed much to biting cold and GP defensive pressure. Three passes went for touch downs and three others for substantial gains of 14, 33 and 42 yards. Dick Ragsdale had two of the touchdowns pitch es and Jim Barry the-other one. Tornado stalwarts led at the quarters 14 to 0, 27 to 7 and 34 to 7. Penalties Battled . First Medford TD came two minutes into the fracas after Grants Pass had been forced to punt. The Tornado took oer on its 32 and one play gained only a yard. Then, Hood got the ball on a reverse, arced around left end, got a key block and romped away to the goal. To get the second marker Medford actually had to of fense for 123 yards. It was an 88-yard drive but the Tornado had to overcome three penal ties totaling 35 yards. The 33 yard Ragsdale to Dean pass was helpful in this end. On the 11th scrimmage play Ragsdale chucked to. Hood for the last 14 yards. Ramsby averaged 210 for six games Friday night. Carl Lane, Klamath Falls, was sec ond going into today's race, with 1,172. The night action cut the fjeld to 16 bowlers. Last man to get in under the wire was Howard Larsen, Grants Pass, who had 1,172. yards after a Ragsdale inter ception to gain the pay zone again. It took 10 plays and for the final 13 Ragsdale threw to Dean who tumbled out of the end zone after snag ging the ball. Play Backfires A pass-lateral play backfir ed on the Cavemen and set up the fourth goal ward surge. Rex Benner passed to Oscar Nealy who was tackled by Medford's Anderson as Nealy tried to lob the ball to Glen Davis. Lynn Knight fell on the pigskin for the Tornado on the GP 36. Nine plays after ward Bennett dove into the end zone from a yard away. That made it 27 to 0. With a storming ground as sault Medford moved 67 yards in 13 plays off the second half boot-off. Bennett drove over the right side of "the line for three yards and the TD. In the fourth canto a Knight interception of a Benner toss which bounced off a player, put the ball on the GP 20 in Medford hands. A reverse and pass Barry to Anderson cov-' ered that distance for the score. Tornado Line Opens Way Grants, Pass, Medford's chief adversary in recent sea sons in the conference and co champ with the Tornado in 1957 and 1958 because of ties in the games between the two, did not show quite the fire which had been anticipated on Friday. Medford with its quick and tough blocking line moved with good consistency through the hefty Cavemen club. There were times of stiff resistance and Steve Bennett, Ron Hoatson, Tom Hathaway, Nealy and Purkett did some yeoman defensive work for the Climate city team. For Medford, pass intercep tions by Ken Durkee, Rags dale and Knight and fumble recoveries by Anderson and Knight aided the defensive cause and Reggie Breeze, Ter ry Earl, John James and Cal Dean were other stalwarts in holding the Cavemen down. GP netted just two yards on the ground in the second half. Mike Hood picked up 140 yards in 12 carries for the Tor nado. Sieg had 68 for 11 tries and Bennett 53 for 14. Spiegelberg did not call on near the number of reserves he has in most other games this season. W. Jensen, chairman of the Rogue ' soil conservation dis trict , Foote's topic was range and pasture conservation. He com peted against students from various sections of Oregon. Ed Griggs, vo-ag instructor at Crater High school, Central Point, was his coach. Foote will receive a trophy from Simplot Fertilizer com pany and a cash award from the state contest, Jensen re ported. There is no national contest. . The Jackson club topped the circuit with four wins., Halftime score Friday was 12 to 6. ? Ken Curtis ran three, 10 and eight yards for Jackson touchdowns. He passed to For rest Funk for one and Steven Stoddard intercepted a pass and ran 30 yards for -the other. A Curtis to Dee Forbes pass and a run by Clyde Lees brought extra points.
