S. Wea ther Bureau for the Bureau of Public Roads. Designed to ad vise highway engineers in construction of overhead high way signs, the map shows maximum wind speed 30 feet above the ground, based on the 50-year mean recurrence. The wind speeds take into ac count thunderstorms and hur ricanes, but not tornadoes. Adequate highway signs for the interstate system may cost nearly $500,000,000. The greater dimensions of the new signs make it necessary to construct stronger supporting structures. HARVARD MAN DIES Cambridge, Mass. - (UFB -Chandler R. Post, 79, pro fessor emeritus of fine arts at Harvard University, died Monday night. An expert in Spanish painting and sculp ture, Post was a member of the Harvard faculty for 45 years. The Medical by A CITE One of the most distressing diseases of young people is acne. In its severe forms it produces so much unhappi- ness. It is a very common disease, and one not easily treated be cause there are several varieties; and often, in order to get good results, the treatment has Dr. Alvares to be watched over and car ried out by an excellent skin specialist.- As if well known, it is a disease of teen-agers. It commonly shows up around the time of puberty, and often it ends about the age of 22. Sometimes, how ever, it continues to give trou ble for many more years. It must have something to do with the glands of internal secretion, and particularly the sex glands. It can be severe in big, strapping athletic and other wise very healthy boys. Inter estingly, it does not appear in eunuchs, or in a lad who has such small testicles that they haven't much function. In girls, acne often flares up with each menstrual period. It is most likely to occur in girls with menstrual irregu larities. Its relation to the sex glands is shown also by the fact that in the cases of older women, when they are being treated with male hormone because of a cancer of the breast or the womb, acne may show up. It can be produced experimentally in girls by giving them progesterone, which is related to the ovar ian hormone. Acne sometimes can be produced in men and women of any age by giving them cortisone. Many Have Oily Skin One primary difficulty with sufferers from acne is that many of them have a greasy, oily skin. The fat glands in their skin are too active. As a result, they have many blackheads or so-called come dones. The taking of bromides or iodides will cause an acne like eruption. Chocolate fa vors the production of acne in the cases of many young sters. Perhaps ice cream and all the rich sundaes which teen-agers love to consume in great quantities tend to make acne worse. It is said that acne can get worse with emo tional tension, and some writ ers think some disturbances in the nervous system is im portant. What often happens in cas es of mild acne is that a little plug of greasy material forms in" one of the fat-producing glands of the skin, and there by produces a blackhead. The blackhead gets infected and this results in a pustule which, later, can produce pitting and scarring. Because of this se quence of events, I like to see a boy or girl with acne buy from a drug store a comedone extractor. It is a tiny spoon with a hole in it. Each evening one puts the hole over a blackhead, and pushes down, and with this, out comes the little colmun of fat. In some cases, one can almost cure acne with this technic, because then the fat glands are much less likely to get infected. Sometimes the inflamma tion is much more deep-seated in the skin and then it may be hard to treat. As Dr. Herbert Rattner, of Chicago, said in a recent excellent ar ticle on acne, the' problem often is complicated. There may well be a number of fac tors which we physicians still do not know about. Certain ly, there are several types of acne, each of which produces a different picture on the face. There is also an acne that comes on the back and oh the forehead. In many youngsters acne is a mild dis ease, while in others, it is severe and productive of marked scarring. Much de pends on the violence or lack of violence in the reaction of the skin to the presence of the blackheads and tiny abs cesses. Troatmont Varies Naturally, the treatment varies with the type and se verity of the disease. Skin specialists used to use small doses of x-rays tec try to cut down on the greasiness of the skin, but now many have quit using such radiation. It is very important to encourage the the youngster, and to try to keep him or her from getting too discouraged about the dis ease. Mayo CUaie person who does not get too great an inferiority complex over his pimply face, and sensibly keeps going about his work and play. In all cases, the liberal use of ordinary soap and water two or three times a day can help greatly by reducing oiliness and combating infec tion. This tends to keep the surface of the skin soft so that the fatty (sebaceous) matter in the blackheads can come out. The head should be sham pooed frequently to get out grease. An excellent soap to use is the old-fashioned "Tinc ture of Green Soap." A table spoonful can be used as a shampoo. It may help the youngster to cut down on the richness of the diet. Fats should be avoided, also foods such as chocolate, nuts, ice cream, cheese, and perhaps milk. The youngster should keep a record to see what he ate oi did just before a flare up came. Some skin specialists today feel they can get good results by giving small daily doses of an antibiotic, which may cut down on thp amount of in fection in the skin. (Released by The Register and Tribune Syndicate, 1959) New Use Found For Old Fire Bell Watkins Glen, N.Y.-OJPD-A new use has been found for the old fire bell atop the mu nicipal building in Watkins Glen. Its original purpose was to summon volunteer firemen. When a siren was installed, the bell was rung only for fire department meetings. Now, it tolls the curfew for village children 16 and under. In a move to keep the youngsters closer to home, the trustees of Watkins Glen recently decided to reestablish a curfew ordinance that had been in effect years ago. The bell is sounded at 9:45 p.m. each night as a first warning. When it rings again at 10, all children must be off the streets. B Thursday, Nov. 5, 1959 Radioactive Disposal Methods Suggested Dallas, Tex. - (Science Ser vice) - Low-level radioactive wastes, now dumped in streams, may be disposed of in underground sandstone lay ers, the Federation of Sewage and Industrial Wastes Associ ations here has been told. Prof. Benjamin B. Ewing, University of Illinois, and Prof. Warren J. Kaufman and James V. Kerrigan, Univer sity of California, Berekeley, suggested pumping water-carried wastes into sandstone layers deep enough to avoid contaminating ground water, oil, coal or minerals. In pass ing through the sandstone, 'the radioactive wastes would be deposited in a manner similar to deposition of minerals in a water softener. The purified water would return to the sur face through a second well at a distance. New York-dlPD-At least 10 per cent of all ceramic tile produced in 1959 will be used on building exteriors, says Tile Council research director Dr. J. Vincent Fitzgerald.
