S. 15 Steel Strike Claimed Hurting Vega Program Miami Beach, Fla. -(Science Service)- The National Aeronautics and Space admin istration's chief, Dr. T. Keith Glennan, says the steel strike is setting back NASA's Vega program. Dr. Glennan told the Amer ican Bankers association here today that shortages resulting from the steel strike are set ting back the TJ.S. program for putting 4,800 pounds in a 300-nule orbit and 1,000 pounds in a deep space trajec tory that would carry the rocket past the moon. Under the Vega program, the U.S. is modifying the powerful Atlas missile. Other stages, to burn conventional liquid propellants. will be added to the Atlas. In a three- stage form, which Dr. Glen nan said should be ready for flight early in 1961, the Vega rocket is to carry 4,800 pounds into orbit and 1,000 pounds deep into space. (This will still fall short of Russia's .achievement of orbiting about 8,000 pounds with Sputnik I.) Program Reviewed He reviewed the national space program and c ncluded that it is "making good, sound progress." "We do not intend to rush pell-mell into makeshift space 'spectaculars' in hopes of top Dine each Soviet space suc cess," he told the bankers. "But I can assure you that we do not injnd for long to run second in any phase of space exploration." He also said U.S. missiles, though lacking the thrust of Russain rockets, nevertheless can deliver equal nuclear punches. This is because U.S. nuclear scientists have made atomic and hydrogen weapons , more compact, lighter and ef ficient, he said.
