Brown's five - touchdown spree against the Colts Sun day at Baltimore enabled the Cleveland Browns to upset the defending league champions, 38-31. His touchdowns on runs of 70, 17 and three yards and a pair of one-yard plunges also: -Enabled the San Francisco Forty-Niners to take undis puted leadership of -the West ern Division with a iS-l tn umph over the Detroit Lions. - Forced Baltimore, which started the day tied with San Francisco for first, into an up hill fight to retain its Western Division crown. - Kept the onrushing Browns only a game behind the New York Giants, 20-3 victors over the Green Bay Packers, in the Eastern race. Eagles, Browns Tied The Philadelphia Eagles re mained tied with Cleveland at the halfway mark in the cam paign by staving off a Wash ington Redskins rally for a 30-23 triumph. In Sunday's other games, the Chicago Cardinals upset the Pittsburgh Steelers, 45-24, and the Chicago Bears sur prised the Los Angeles Rams, 26-21. Brown, who set an all-time NFL rushing record of 1,527 yards last year, is in his third pro season but never before played against Baltimore. But Big Daddy and his mates had trouble getting their hands on Brown from the time he rocketed over his right tackle and zipped 70 yards to score in the second period. The current Baltimore defensive unit, ranked with New York's as the league's best, never has been so humili ated. Unilas Still Brilliant The 230 - pound Brown gained 178 yards on 32 rushes. Averaging 5.5 yards per carry behind the blocking of Mike McCormack and Cleveland's other offense linemen, he sparked the Browns to victory despite another brilliant pass ing show by John Unitas. Unitas completed 23 of 41 passes for a personal single game high of 397 yards and provided. Baltimore's four touchdowns on short tosses to Lenny Moore, Jerry Richard son, Raymond Berry and Jim Mutscheller. But Cleveland's defense, basis for the team's seven Eastern titles in the last nine years, halted Unitas in the clutch. The Brownies stopped Unitas four times within the Cleveland 10 to the disgust of a sellout crowd of 57,557. Baltimore now must play four of its last six games on the road. Two of the road games are at Los Angeles and San Francisco, where the Colts have won once in 14 tries since 1950. Justice Hall Lusk In Salem Hospital Salem-dJPD-Oregon Supreme Court Justice Hall S. Lusk, 76, was in Salem General hospital for what his wife termed "rest, observation and treat ment of a prolonged skin dis ease." He entered the hospital Saturday. Although he was expected to be in the hospital for sever al days, his doctor said his condition is "not serious." Lusk has been on the high bench since 1937. This was little solace for a team which had just taken a double defeat-on the score board and physically from the Bears. Halas said, after Sunday's 26-21 Bear win over the Rams, that the Los Angeles ball club would take NFL Western di vision leading San Francisco "Because they have better overall personnel." But he was hard put to explain how the Bears lost to the Forty Niners last week and then soundly defeated the club he says will upend San Francisco. He was not at a loss, how- ever, with reasons for Sun day's win. Hs said: "Clobber" Didn't Materialize l-"The Rams gave us a big morale boost when they let it be known they were going to 'clobber' us." 2-"We fooled 'em with our tight-T offense in the first half when reserve quarterback Zeke Bratowski started, and then again when we reverted to our regular 'slot-T' forma tion in the second half with regular quarterback Ed Brown at the helm." 3-"Fullback Rick Casares played his best game of the season. The whole team ran better because the line block ed better. That's been our trouble all season." Linfield Wins Over Whitman United Press International Linfield's Wildcats pound ed out a 28-7 win over Whit man Saturday night on the strength of a three-touchdown third period. It was the first Northwest conference win for the Wild cats. Quarterback Bill Parrish flipped a pair of 14-yard scor ing passes to pace the Wildcat offense before a homecoming crowd of 2,500. Pacific recorded the only win among the four other schools of the league in non conference action. The Badgers turned loose a five touchdown second half attack to overwhelm Portland State, 40-0 in the Pacific homecoming at Forest Grove On the losing side of the picture for conference clubs, Willamette fell to College of Puget Sound, 26-7; Lewis and Clark dropped a 13-7 decision to the Seattle Ramblers, and Idaho State edged College of Idaho, 28-21. Corvallis Plywood Changes Ownership Corvallis-flJPB-The ' Corval lis Plywood company has been sold to Benton Plywood in a transaction that involved $500,000 plus the inventory, it has been announced here. Al Overgard, manager of Corvallis Plywood, said the change of ownership became effective Sunday. Plywood Products, which operates a plant at Camp Adair in north Benton coun ty, has filed the assumed bus iness name of Benton Ply wood with the county clerk's office. Corvallis Plywood, a glue- up operation that leases city owned property at the Cor vallis airport, has been under the jurisdiction of Lester Oeh ler, bankruptcy referee, since it went into bankruptcy in 1957. BISPLINGHOFF WINS Sarasota, Fla. -(UPD- Don Bisplinghoff won the Florida West Coast Open golf tourna ment Sunday by a single stroke over Billy Thornton. Bisplinghoff finished the 54 hole tourney with a 216.. SPORTS Trapping Begins In Southeastern Part of State Salem - (UPD - Oregon trap pers swing into action Sun day with the season opener in the southeastern portion of the state for beaver, otter and muskrat. Areas opening include Lake, Harney, and Malheur counties. Klamath county also opened for muskrat trapping but won't open for beaver and otter until Nov. 15. The general trapping sea son on a state-wide, basis will open Nov. 15 when mink, marten and ring-tail cat, in addition to beaver, otter and muskrat may be legally trap ped. The season runs through Feb. 15, except for mink. The mink season ends Jan. 15. Muskrat may be , legally trapped in Lake, Klamath, Malheur and Harney counties through March 31. Trappers were advised by the state game commission that in addition to a general trapping license, special tags costing $1 are required to trap and sell beaver. Johansson May Not Face Floyd Until Next May Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-(UPB-Heavyweight champion Inge- mar Johansson may not meet Floyd Patterson in a return title bout before May of 1960, a business consultant for the Swedish boxing star said. This apparently means the Orange Bowl in Miami has been eliminated as a possible site for the fight, said Wil liam J. Kelley of Fort Lauder dale. The May date would come after Florida's lucrative winter season has ended. Several Floridians, includ ing retired champion Rocky Marciano, have been hoping to secure the Johansson-Patterson fight for Miami. Marciano said he knew sev eral Florida businessmen who would "bid as high as neces sary ' to get ine iigni ior me Oranee Bowl. He said he plans to see Johansson in New York Nov. 19 and will outline at that time what the Miami area can offer. Don Foose Cops Climb Don Foose, Medford, was top winner yesterday in the hill climb sponsored by Rogue Valley Riders Motorcycle club on Applegate hill. He was first in the middle weight class, first in the open and had the fastest time of the day with :24.2. Walt Sargent, Grants Pass, won the lightweight with :36.8 and John Winkler, Ashland, second at :42.9 and Jim Aljo, Eagle Point, third. Shin Jackio, Eureka, Calif., t ' A. was second m neavyweigm with :24.9 and Dick Chamber, Grants Pass, third with :29.7. Foose's time in this event was :24.3 and his best was in the middleweight run. Winkler was second in middleweight with :26.2 and Howard West, Klamath Falls, third with 28.2. St. Peter's Basiclica Archpriest Succumbs Rome -(UPD- Federico Cardi nal Tedeschini, archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica, died to day. He was 86. Vatican sources said death was caused by an intestinal occlusion. Tedeschini was elevated to the rank of cardinal in 1935 by Pope Pius XI and served as pastor of St. Peter's from the time of his consecration until his death. fill goes over for an Oregon score. (UPI Telephoto) Forty-Niner Eleven in Lone Lead San Francisco -(UPD- Coach Red Hickey of the San Fran cisco Forty Niners is facing as tough a "Month of Sundays" as possible today - but it's a cinch he's a happy man. Hickey's hammering Forty Niners moved into undisputed possession of first place of the National Football league's Western division Sunday with a devastating 33-7 win over the Detroit Lions. San Francisco's 5-1 record held up when Baltimore's Colts lost a 38-31 score-fest to Cleveland, dropping the Colts to second place with a 4-2 mark. Coming up for San Francis co are four straight rugged tests on the road - with the Rams, Packers. Colts and Browns. The Forty Niners will return to friendly Kezar stadium Dec. 5 against the Colts, and windnip the season one week later with the Pack ers. Why Not on Top? "I don't know how long it'll be before we lose," said a iu- bilant Hickey after Sunday's win, "but there's no reason why we can't stay right on top." And to the 59,064 fans jam med into Kezar stadium Sun day afternoon there was no apparent reason either. The home-town redshirts were never in trouble, pairing a fierce defense with the bal anced offensive thrusts that have kept them winning all season. J. D. Smith's explosive 73 yard touchdown jaunt after 1:25 gone in the first period set the pattern. Other Forty Niner touchdowns followed, and their defense kept the pressure on Lion quarterbacks every second. Kefauver Suggests Special Session Memphis, Tenn. -(UPD- Sen. Estes Kefauver suggested Sun day that President Eisenhow er call a special session of Congress if the 111-day steel strike isn't settled "in the next couple of weeks." Purpose of the session, , he said, would be passage of a compulsory arbitration law. "Nobody likes compulsory arbitration," Kefauver said, "but when the public interest is so clearly at stake . . . there seems to be no other course. STEEL AUTHORITY DIES Pittsburgh-flJPD-Carl B. Pol lock, 64, vice president of the Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp. and nationally known author ity on steelmaking, died of a heart attack Saturday night. And quite a task it will be. The Beavers face Washing ton, Sanford and Oregon, in that order. Prothro was a bit perplexed at the lack of Ore gon State offensive power in Saturday's 14-0 white-wash by Washington State. The Beavers managed only 98 net yards on the ground and 31 yards on two complet ed passes in 14 attempts against the Cougars. Prothro said the Cougars showed the best pass defense the Beavers have faced this season. "The best pass defense," he added with a smile, "since we started throwing." He re minded that Oregon State's passing offense came to life in the previous two games against Idaho and California. To date the Beavers have combined a not so enviable 2-5 record. This coupled with the remaining slate of rugged foes seems to point to Pro thro's first losing season since he took over the reins at OSC in 1955 and pulled a 1-9 foot ball club to the West Coast Rose Bowl representative in two years. The Hawks, seeking their fourth straight division title, beat the Minneapolis Lakers, 138-101, Sunday as Pettit, last season's scoring champion, dropped in 28 points and Hagan pumped in 26. In the only other league action, the Boston Celtics won their fourth straight by whip ping the Cincinnati Royals, 124-109. Rookie Dave Gambee of Oregon State chipped in with 21 points as St. Louis handed the Lakers their worst home defeat in 13 years. Possibility Nine Clubs In Circuit Conditional franchises were granted' to four teams for berths in the Southern Oregon Independent basketball league at a meeting held in Grants Pass Sunday. The franchises went to Del bert Jones in Ashland, Frea Johnson in Medford, the Med ford Oregon National Guard, and Morris Jiminez in Glen dale. The conditions are that they must show by Sunday, Nov. 8, that they have secured adequate sponsorship and gym facilities to carry out the league schedule. League play will start the week of Dec. 6. Other teams in the loop are Southern Ore gon college junior varsity, Hawkinson Tire of Medford, Butte Falls, Grants Pass and Riddle. Roseburg declined an invitation to join the circuit.
