Hasana Bint Kassem el Hamar was married recently to Andawi Hamed, a member of a neighboring Galilean Bedouin tribe. In exchange, Andawi gave his sister in mar riage to Hasana's brother. Andawi's sister had no chil dren during the first two years of her. marriage - to Hasana's brother so he di vorced her in the Moslem fas hion by saying to her three times: "You are divorced." Hasana's father then order ed his daughter back home in order to cancel the whole deal. Andawi offered to pay his father-in-law 2,000 pounds, but the father began negotia tions with another Bedouin to marry Hasana for a better price. . . ' In the . meantime, Hasana has given birth to a son. Tiberias district police are attempting, to settle the mat ter before there is bloodshed between ,the two tribes. Civil War Vet Fights for Houston, Tex. - (UPD - Wal ter Williams, the last veteran of the Civil War, has made no progress in his struggle to fight off his third attack of pneumonia in recent months. On the other hand, Wil liams, who will observe his 117th birthday Nov. 14 if he lives, was no worse. He is un der an oxygen tent. . Dr. Russell Wolfe, his doc tor, said he will examine him later and issue another report on his condition. After his last examination, Dr. Wolfe listed Williams' condition as serious, not critical.- He said Williams has pneumonia through his entire left lung and his blood pres sure is abnormal. Nuthatch Acts Strangely But He's Friendly - It would be only natural that a bird, whose peculiari ties are such that it is some times called a "tree-mouse" or a "devil downward" or "topsy-turvy" bird, should also have the word "nut" as part of its name. But the names are not the only peculiar traits inherent in the "nut hatch". There are several varieties, such as white-breasted, red- breasted, brown-headed and pygmy, as well as a half doz en other kinds scattered over North America. They all act pretty much the same. All could be classed as climbing birds because of their charac teristic habit of always being in a "head-down" position. They always seem to be run ning head-first down the free trunk. Friendly Birds Although the nuthatches act strangely, seeming always inverted or heels over head, they are about the friendliest as well as the tamest of any woodland creature. Even when it would seem much easier to adopt a more com fortable and conventional position at a feeding tray or on a tree trunk, the nuthatch prefers to be upside down. The bird can run down a tree headfirst as gracefully as a squirrel. The "nut part of the bird's name was probably derived from its fondness for small nuts, especially beechnuts, which it sometimes lodges in a bark crevice while it hacks away at the shell with power ful blows of the beak. These friendly little short tailed birds spend most of their time running head downward, up and down tree trunks, peering intently into every crack, crevice and ir regularity of the bark in studied intentness, seeking in sects and insect eggs. Unlike the woodpecker that uses its stiff tail for support on the tree, the nuthatch ; carries its short tail in an upright posi tion. Flies After Insect One variety of nuthatch, the red-breasted, sometimes leaves the tree trunk to fly af ter a passing insect, a habit never indulged in by the j white-b r e a s t e d. The red breasted departs from the rest of the family in still another peculiar trait. It often smears the pitch from pine trees around ' the opening of the nesting cavity, a habit that has never been explained. Some observers, who may or may not be right, have the idea the pitch might trap some careless insectSj holding them fast until the insect-hungry bird could pick them out of the sticky material. This idea however seems a little too obvious to be the real reason. All things considered, the friendly little grayish colored nuthatches do seem a little "nutty" in many of their ac tions. Even the strange little call-a peculiar yauk, yauk sounds exactly as though the bird were trying, to "sing through its nose." MAIL TRIBUNE. Medford, Or. 7 Portlander Dies In Jump Off Bridge Portland - (UPD - Westley Grant, 70, Portland business man, plunged to his death from the 200-foot high St. Johns bridge Sunday. Police said Grant, who own ed the Portland Trailer park, drove onto the bridge, got out of the car and plunged to his death in the Willamette river. His body was recovered minutes later by a fire boat. He is survived by his wife and son.
