There is some thing ; about the flavor of black walnuts never found in any other food; actually it is a aste sensation. The flavor has been more-or-less success fully imitated by artificial chemicals. However, the real tang comes only from the oily goodness of the meats. 150 Feet High.; - The black walnut tree it self is majestic often tower- ,ing up into the air 150 feet. ,The bark is dark colored and deeply furrowed. Some peo ple who have lived in close association with the tree claimed the "tree sang in the wind." Usual Examination , "There is absolutely noth ing wrong other than the usual' examination," Press Secretary James C. Hagerty said of the examination. Eisenhower was 69 . years old Oct. 14. He has been suf fering since early September fronra cold of varying degree and the discomfort of recur rent, chronic bronchitis, r. : The physical examination will be conducted by the staff of specialists at Walter Reed working on consultation with the President's doctor, Maj. Gen. Howard McC. Sayder. ' MAIL TRIBUNE, M.dforJ, Or. Small Worlds Around Us By Lynn M. Watkins this sounds much like an old wive's tale, there was some basis for the idea. Wind pass es easily through the leaves, and in its passing the foliage quivers and vibrates in a pe culiar "singing" sigh; "vibrat ing leaves" someone called it. In the fall of the year the black walnut trees hang heavy with fruit. The nuts are - the size of tennis-balls; each nut carefully and heavi ly wrapped in a heavy, thick husk. The frost "cuts the nuts loose," they rattle earthward and often cover the ground beneath the tree. The nut it self is deeply ridged, and al most black.1; After the nuts are gathered and dried a few days, the "shucking" begins. This is a process in itself. Perhaps one of the unforgettable memories of ?11 folks who "went nut ting" in the fall, was the "walnut shucking," the re moval of the heavy husk that surrounds the ridged nut. Some farm-families used a "corn sheller." Turned by hand, the iron teeth of the shucking wheel tore the husks from the nut. Juice Squirts . The original "husking" method was simply a hole in a board the approximate size of the nut, but smaller than the husk. The nut, with the husk intact, was laid on the hole and hit sharply with a hammer. This drove the nut through the 'board, at the same time squeezing off the thick husk.. Usually the wal nut juice squirted out in sev eral directions.. To avoid staining the hands and fin gers, thick gloves were worn. The juice was almost as per manent as the best dye; once on the bare skin it resisted several washings with soap and water. But even if the hands were stained it was worth it, for lohs winter evenings around the fire could be shortened by cracking the nuts and pickiiig the oily 'kernels from the br ken shells. It would be , difficult to name a flavor that is compa rable with the peculiar, hard to describe, but very pleasing taste of the black walnut.
