Oct. 29, 1959 B Ag Census Blanks Received Locally Jarm census questionnaires have been received by many valley farmers as time nears for the 17th nationwide farm count. Wednesday was the kick-off date in eastern coun ties and Nov. 4 in western Oregon. Federal and state agricul tural workers, largest users of census data, are anxious for census information describ ing the exact situation on American farms in 1959, re ported Marion D. Thomas, Oregon State College exten sion agricultural economist, This will be the first oppor tunity since 1954 for a grass roots check on changes in the rapidly shifting farm picture, he noted. Farmers will be asked to re port costs of production and labor hired this year, as well as the usual questions about crops produced, equipment and practices used. Oregonians will find their 315-question report form some what longer than the question naire in some states because Oregon produces such a varie ty of crops.. But, Thomas said, farmers will need answer only questions applying to their particular operation. The questionnaire covers such topics as size, use and ownership of land, crops har vested, irrigation, forest prod- . ucts, poultry ' and livestock production, dairy production, fertilizer and lime use, select ed farm expenditures, farm and off-farm labor, equipment and facilities, rental agree ments, farm values and mort gage debt. Stolen Traps Bring Warning Salem A recent incident in which 23 traps on a single line were stolen from one of the predatory animal hunter's strings prompts the agencies cooperating in this program to renew this warning: a new law makes illegal the stealing or molesting traps or other devices used by official hunt ers and provides penalties. -' Penalties, upon conviction, may include a fine (up to $500) or "imprisonment in the county jail not more than one year, or both". The same penalties now ap ply to anyone who steals, takes or molests animals cap tured or killed , in official traps or other devices. Cooperators In the preda tory animal program are the ' U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the state department of agriculture. Soil Judging Contest Planned Corvallis - Oregon's third annual soil judging contest is set for Nov. 4 near Salem, Arthur S. King, Oregon State College extension soil conser vation specialist, has an nounced. The contest immediately precedes the annual meeting of the Oregon State Soil Con servation District association, Nov. '5 and 6, at the Marion hotel. This year for the first time, the youth division is divided into four sections: FFA team and individual . competition, and 4-H team and individual competition. Some soil con servation districts are hold ing county contests, to select " 4-H and FFA entries in the . state event. King reported. Other divisions in the state wide contest are the district Tteam division open to a two member team from each dis- trict; an open division for men, which may be entered by anyone regardless of affil- ; iation with soil conservation districts; and the women's di . vision, open to all women on ' an individual ,basis. y A demonstration will lead i off the event Nov. 4 at 10:45 i a. m.
