Also vying for fan interest are such pairings as Texas Christian - Baylor and Texas Southern Methodist in the Southwest. Southern Califor nia California and Washington-UCLA in the Far West, and Pittsburgh - Syracuse and a . full slate of Ivy League games in the East. LSU and Mississippi, two of tne 10 remaining major un beaten and untied teams, both won during the week end to make this Saturday's meeting at Baton Rouge the South's game of the year. The Bayou Tigers (6-0) scored a some what unimpressive 9-0 victory over Florida to run the na tion's longest winning streak to 18 in a row, while Ole Miss, ranked fifth, crushed Arkansas, 28-0, for its sixth straight. Army's tattered legions, re grouped to beat Colorado State, 23-6, to run their season record to 3-2, while the Air Force, whose victory streak was snapped at 15 straight a week ago, ripped UCLA Frk day night, 20-7. That gave the Falcons a 4-1 record in their second season of "big time" action. A crowd of 70,000 is ex pected to watch the service academy . struggle in Yankee Stadium. The game, sold out for weeks, also will feature the colorful marching of West ' Point's entire Cadet Corps and a representative group from the Air Force.. The Navy-Notre Dame game at South Bend, Ind., will be Forty-Five Teams Still Undefeated New York (UPD - Forty-five teams, including 10 major schools today were listed on college football's perfect-record honor roll. Oregon and Pennsylvania were knocked off the list dur ing the week end, leaving LSU, Penn State, Yale, Texas, Mississippi, Syracuse, South ern. California, Northwestern, Arizona State and North Tex as State as the only major college survivors. ,- Yale emerged as the only unscored upon team - major or minor-when Florida A&M surrendered its . first . touch down of the season in 'whip ping Bethune-Cookman, 68-6. Huron (S.D.) college stood out among the small college perfect-record teams, outscor ing its first seven opponents, 332-7. ' '. ' . the 33rd in their series which first go underway, in 1927. The Irish hold a decided edge, 25-6, while one game - in 1945-wound up in a tie. Both teams this ' year are a bit under par (for them), with Navy sporting a 2-3-1 record and Notre Dame 2-3. The Mid shipman battled to a 22-22 tie with Pennsylvania during the week end, while the Irish dropped a 30-24 decision to second-ranked Northwestern. ' The Big Ten lineup, which will produce one of the Rose Bowf teams, has Wisconsin (2-1) pitted against Michigan (1-2), Michigan State (2-1) against Ohio State (1-2) and Purdue (2-1) against Illinois 2-1). Northwestern, the con ference leader with a 3-0 rec ord, plays Indiana (1-2). Stanford's Greatest Heights And so it went Saturday with Stanford rising to its greatest heights of the season only to lose to unbeaten USC; Oregon getting knocked out of the undefeated ranks; and California dropping its fifth in the row the hard way. Stanford had been expect ed to be slaughtered by USC, and the odds-makers favored the Trojans by 18 points. "That was ridiculous," said Coach Don Clark of the win ners. "That Stanford club, if it gets everything going for it, could beat anybody." The Indians have won only one game all season over lowly College of Pacific. But they were "up ior this one "I couldn't have been prouder of my boys if they had won," said coach Jack Curtice of the Indians after the game. "Isn't that Dick Norman somethin'?" Norman completed 16 out of 32 passes for 207 yards to run the Trojans wild. He was a hero in defeat. But up at Portland, Bob Schlordt, the all-around star of the Washington Huskies, was a hero in victory. He scored one touchdown, set up another and intercepted an Oregon pass behind the goal line to save the day for the Huskies. Washington now has won five of its first six games losing only to Southern Cali fornia in a thriller and plays UCLA, Oregon State, Cali fornia and Washington State in that order, to finish out the season. USC (5-0), not eligible for the Rose Bowl because of an NCAA probation, tangles with California on Saturday. Wash ington meets UCLA. Bears Lose Close One . The Golden Bears had a game just about tucked away F .turday. Then, with Oregon State trailing by four points and 3:51 remaining of . the game, Kasso unleashed a. 31 yard pass to end Amos Marsh. Marsh took. the catch "over his shoulder in the end zone for the Beaver triumph. . "What do you have to do to win a. game?" asked coach Pete Elliott of Cal after the loss. But the Huskies, behind Bob Schloredt's in spired play, made breaks and George Fleming's conversion pay off io win. Powell suffered a banged- up shoulder in the second half, but the word from trainer Bob Officer today was that he would be ready Saturday. Idaho has been a doormat all season but the Vandals led Washington State 3-0 at the half and Casanova said they're capable of upsetting the Web foots. "Deserved io Win" As for last Saturday's game, Casanova said, "we made some errors we hadn't made earlier but we were playing the toughest team we've met and I thought the players gave it everything they had and deserved to win." As for Dave Grosz' pass in the fourth period when the Webfoots had moved to the Husky 14 on the ground, Cas anova said, "you can't second guess all the time." That pass was intercepted by Schloredt in the end zone and spelled finish to Webfoot hopes. But the Oregon coach did admit the Webfoots kept them selves in the hole and "made too many mistakes." One .of these was by half back Dave Grayson who step ped out of bounds on his own two yard line while trying to run back the second half kick off. A few minutes later Grosz broke away for a long run that would have taken the Webfoots out of the hole but it was nullified by a clipping penalty. -Both Now 5-1 Oregon now is 5-1 for the season, as is Washington. But the Huskies, hold the edge in the Rose Bowl race because of ; their win over the Web foots. . Oregon led 12-0 in the second period Saturday. The Webfoots drove 78 yards on the ground to score the first time they got the ball. Powell made it from a yard out. But a bad pass from center spoiled the extra point try. The Ducks got their other touchdown on a 12-yard pass from Grosz to Greg Altenhofen. A two-point Don Kasso In Stride " Corvallis (DPD-Oregon State, with sophomore tailback Don Kasso at last "coming of age" today began serious drills for Saturday's Homecoming game with Washington State. Kasso was the man of the hour for the Beavers in their come-from-behind 24-20 win over California at Berkeley last Saturday. Engineering a 73-yard.: last-quarter scoring drive, Kasso, playing in his heme town, spiraled a 31-yard scoring' pass to end Amos Marsh to give the Beavers their fifth straight win over the Bears. -; Coach Tommy Prothro, beaming and sweat-drenched after the see-saw battle ad mitted that Kasso "played like I know he can play." "Kasso has been awfully nervous all fall," Prothro re minded. "I hated to throw him in early. When it got late, we had to go with a boy. who could either win it or lose it for us.". .
