MAR. 1' 42-47-56-58 1 St. Mary Convent Sisters in Portland For Celebration Sisters of St. Mary convent, Medford, are in Portland this week end, joining other Sis ters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary of the Ore gon Province in celebrating the Centenary of the order's arrival in Portland to estab lish the state's first Catholic school. . Saturday the Sisters attend ed a reception at St. Mary Academy, the mother institu tion of the order's school sys tem" in the Oregon province, for Mother Mary of the Blessed Sacrament, superior general of the Sisters of the Holy Names, who came from the mother house in Montreal for the Centenary. Students from colleges, high schools and grade schools taught by the Holy Names sisters sang the Ordinary of the Mass. Archbishops Celebrant of the Mass, which was sung Wednesday night in the city auditorium, was Archbishop Edward D. Howard, Portland, and the occasional sermon was given by Archbishop Edward Con nolly, Seattle. The original band of 12 sisters in Portland has grown to a group of 902 who are directly or indirectly engaged in the educational works per formed by the Holy Names sisters throughout Oregon and Washington. Until St. Vincent hospital was opened in 1875 by the Sisters of Providence (who also staff Sacred . Heart hospital in Medford), they were the only order of sisters in Oregon and were called upon to do social work as well as teaching and conducting Sunday schools. School Enrollment ' In . the Oregon province their total school enrollment has grown from the six in 1859 . to more than 19,000 in 1959. These . students are at tending , the two colleges, eight high schools, 41 ele mentary schools and one nursery school either oper ated or staffed by the order. One of the Holy Names' oldest ' schools is St.. Mary grade and High school of Medford which was originally established in 1865 in Jack sonville at the request of the Rev. Francis X'.vjer Blan chet. In 1908 the sisters moved the academy to Medford, and in 1951 the school was pur chased by Sacred Hep.rt par ish, but continues to be staffed by the sisters with the assistance i of ' several lay teachers.' Earlier this year during the Centennial celebration of the consecration of: St. Joseph church of Jacksonville, the Medford sisters were honored at a banquet and tribute, paid them for their part in the furtherance of Christian edu cation. . Navy To Build . Gooney Bird Nests Washington-(DPD-The Navy, in deference to bird lover , has ordered the Seabees to carve out some new nesting spots for the gooney birds that pester Navy aircraft at Midway Island. The Navy said Thursday it would spend $110,000 to re move dunes lining its Mid way aircraft runways and to pave the areas to discourage nesting by the-birds, known more formally as laysan alba trosses. It already has hacked out 19 fifty-foot ."runways" for gooney birds' nesting and fly ing at Green Island in the Kure Atoll, 50 , miles from Midway. . r ; The Navy hopes this .will lure some of the birds away from Midway, which is used by big Navy Constellation airplanes which patrol the Pa cific. The service said 538 col lisions between gooney birds and planes at Midway last year caused $156,000 in dam age. Bird lovers argue the goon ey birds are in danger of be coming extinct if they con tinue to be killed by planes at Midway. CENTRAL POINT School Activities Set By DORIS HUGHES Central Point - Arthur" Straus, principal of Crater High school, and the Crater Parent Teachers association have set open house at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, at Crater High school cafetorium. The PTA will hold its busi ness meeting and the newly organized chorus, The Lava- liers, will give two perform ances. A miniature schedule of the day's classes will be run, enabling parents to be come acquainted with the teachers and giving the teach ers the opportunity of intro ducing new curriculum to the parents. Refreshments will be served by the PTA. - Youth Groups Plan Halloween Parties 'Neglect a Fire of Anger and It Spreads" will . be the sermon subject at the Zion Lutheran church, Fourth st. and Oakdale ave., by the Rev, H. C. Coovert, today. The adult instruction class will be held today at 4 p.m. at the church. ' ' Senior Luther League will meet at the church, at 6:30 p.m. A Halloween party will be held at the George Ander son's barn in Ashland, Hallo ween costumes or barn yard disguises are in order. Dessert will be served. Junior Luther League will meet Sunday at the home of Mrs. Jan Nelson, 333 Hill- house dr. at 7 p.m. for a Hal loween party.1 Choir practice will be held Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 7:30 p.m. at the church. The dedication of the new educational unit will be Nov, 8, at the 11 p.m. service. Portland - (UPD - The fall meeting of advertising man agers of Oregon newspapers opened here today. Twohundred and fifty stu dents . from . Central Point Junior- High school will go by bus Monday to the Grants Pass Roller Drome for a skat ing party.' Busses will leave from the junio- high school gymnasium at 5:30 and return at 9:30 p.m. school officials stated. Bill Brewster, principal of Jewett Elementary school, an nounced that assemblies are scheduled . 'in-,-, both ; Central Point Elementary schools Monday. Chief Tecumseh of the Snoqualmie and Wenatch- ee Indian tribes will present a program on Indian lore, dances, customs and safety. Chief Tecumseh is noted as a poet and writer of folklore. He Lj also noted 'or his out standing lyric tenor voice. The time for Jewett school has been set for 9 a.m. Pro gram time for the Central Point school had; not been set. Peter's Lutheran church, returned Thursday from a three-day conference "of the Oregon pastors of the Luther an Church - Missouri Synod, held at Trinity Lutheran church, Hillsboro.
