Caesar Show Offered Laughs But Disappointed the Reviewer By FRED DANZIG I United Press International ' New York-iUPD - This has been quite a week for the TV tube. X- Monday night we had Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Dear? Martin; Tuesday night, Ingrid Bergman, and Wednes day night, comedy with Sid Caesar and his guests, Tony Randall, Audrey Meadows 5md Gisele Mackenzie. J- It was nice to have Sid pack. There were a number of solid laughs during the CBS-TV hour, but frankly, I was disappointed. The major effort of the evening was a half-hour sketch about an im migrant who becomes a great Automobile maker. Basically, this sketch, with Caesar play ing Anton Polka, the immi grant, and Tony Randall his American - born son, was warmed-over Caesar skits of TV shows gone by. The inven tiveness we've come to expect from Caesar was generally absent. I spotted only one Special touch: Caesar is slic ing his dinner a chunk of I'boiled bread" and he asks his wife, Audrey Meadows, if she'd, like an outside cut. Z .The opening sketch had more laughs in it. Caesar, as ihe driver on a cross-country Jrip, was wildly funny por traying a man siphoning gas tline and eating while driv ing. Randall was excellent in his sketch and all evening long. The show was titled "Holi day On Wheels," and was ded icated to tne automobile in dustry, but there was no bite in it. There were no spoofs of Such automotive fetishes as size, design and salesmanship, unfortunately. Since CBS net work is on a "tell the. viewer everything" kick, I'd like to say that the show was taped in New York last August and not on the open road. Miss Mackenzie's singing was pre recorded, and the "gasoline" that Caesar "swallowed" was n't really. Dialing and Filing: Wasn't Charley. Weaver's Hobby Lob by, on ABC-TV Wednesday night, risking a "riggin" in vestigation when Weaver Cliff Arquette went flying over the state attached to the mechan ical aids of guest Peter Foy? Weaver's show is at its best when Charley gets a chance to comment on the props his guests bring along. A toucing contrast on NBC TV's Perry Como show: Guest Rosemary Clooney came on in a full-length mink coat, bearing a French poodle and a flashing ring. A few min utes later, Rosie went into her song "I Got Plenty Of Nothin'." Men in Space on CBS-TV passed up an effective, drama tic death-in-space ending Wed nesday night in favor of the usual loppy-happy note. The Channel Swim! Debbie Reynolds has signed a three year exclusive contract with ABC-TV. She'll star in three hour-long specials, one a year, and appear as a guest star on at least one other ABC-TV special. Ray Bolger will co-star with Jimmy Durante, Jane Powell and Eddie Hodges in NBC-TV's special, "Give My Regards To Broadway," on Sunday, Dec. 6. Actor Hal Holbrook, who specializes in impersonating Mark Twain, is video-taping an adaptation of Twain's "Roughing It" for Robert Saudek Associates for possible network use next spring. On the subject of Twain, Robert Herridge is producing a three-part ver sion of "Huckleberry Finn" as part of his new half-hour drama series for CBS. It will be Masquerade Par ty, with Bert Parks as em cee, into the Monday night CBS-TV slot vacated by Name That Tune. Diana Lynn, Mary Astor and Gig Young will star in NBC-TV's adaptation of "The Philadelphia Story" on Monday, Dec. 7, the second in the special tonight series. MIDWIFE FOR SCIENTISTS ; London-fllPD-Viscount Hail sham, the head of the newly created Ministry of Science, was asked Wednesday what his new duties entailed: "I regard myself as a midwife for the scientists," he replied.
