Fat, Heart Risk Said Acceptable By DELOS SMITH UPI Science Editor New York - (UPD - Because of all the medical tish-tish over heavy people, it will a jm&t2r:n come as a shock that a r e 1 a tion be- X tA i iween a lot 01 body fat and a f higher risk of j heart - artery disease has ribeen proved y,-m. a scientifi- cally accept- dcios smiui . able manner for the first time. However, it failed to show that being overweight with out being excessively fat im poses an added risk. To many that will sound impossible, but it isn't. A so-called "nor mal" weight for a person of your age, height, and sex is taken from a chart, like those on penny weighing machines. Other Thing Excluded The chart figure is the av erage weight of a large num ber of persons of your age, height, and sex. But it does not take into account other things besides fat which could push your. weight, above this average,, such as a heavier than average skeleton and so heavy muscles. Like, interested scientists the world over, Dr. Kenneth Sanders was bothered by this. Almost all studies implicating body fat as a factor in the on-set of heart-artery disease were baed on body weights ratner tnan on body fat He took 48 men who had had heart attacks. He "match ed" them with 52 men of the same ages, heights, and weights who never had had a heart attack. Then he meas ured the amounts of fat on the bodies of heart-attack vic tims and the "controls." Significant Difference There was no difference in how the body weights of heart-artery disease victims and of the "controls" compar- :ed to the normal weights for men of their ages and heights. But there was a most "significant" difference in the masses of body fat on the pa tients and "controls." Sanders works in London and reported to the technical journal, "The Lancet." He said he had answered the ANTI-SEMITISM COSTLY Aachen, Germany - (UPD - A court Monday convicted tax official Erich Tasche, 42, of insulting West German Social ist Leader Erich Ollenhauer and making anti-Semitic statements.- He was sentenced to four months in prison.
