Game time is 7 p.m. Baylor Scores 52 for Lakers United Press International The Boston Celtics and Min neapolis Lakers, finalists in the National Basketball asso ciation palyolfs last spring launched the new season by galloping off in opposite direc tions. - The defending champion Celtics turned back the Cin cinnati Royals, 129-115, in their opener Saturday but Minneapolis dropped a 106 105 decision t. the Detroit Pistons Sunday despite a 52 point barrage by the Lakers Elgin Baylor. Bill Russell totaled 32 points and 23 rebounds in the Celts' opener. He was ably assisted by Tom Heinsohn, who had 26 points and 20 re bounds, and Bob Cousy, who sred 23 points and drew 13 assists. Baylor was magnificent against Detroit and he almost pulled the game out in the final minute by dropping in three straight baskets. That was just about the case along the West Coast football trail last Saturday where no less than six teams got on the scoreboard first then were racked up. The worst case was at Stan ford where the Indians coolly moved off to a 13-0 lead then finished as 36-19 losers to Washington State. Keith Lin coln, the Cougars fine triple- threater, passed for two touch-downs and capped a great afternoon with a 50 yard scoring jaunt of his own late in the final period. Lin coln also had a hand in a pair of two-point conversions, pass ing for one of them and smashing across for the other. CI Humbles Willamette United Press International The Coyotes of College of Idaho Saturday demonstrated that the strong right arm of Quarterback Charlie Alvaro could well pitch them into the driver's seat of the Northwest conference football chase. Alvaro tossed two -touch down passes, the last one with 46 seconds remaining, to give the Coyotes a 21-14 win over defending champion Willam ette. The senior signal caller connected on pitches of 22 and 10 yards for scores and kicked all three conversions. Larry Miller sparked the Bearcat attack, scoring both touchdowns on runs of three and two yards. The Coyotes, now 2-0-1 in conference play have only weak Pacific and Whitman to play. It was Wil lamette's first conference loss in two seasons. Lewis and Clark's surpris ing Pioneers downed Linfield 19-14 with halfback Jack Ab- die scoring on dashes of five and 75 yards, the latter com ing with only 4:10 left in the game. Whitman spotted Pacific a 3-0 first quarter edge and then pushed across the lone touchdown of the game in the third period for a 7-3 win over, the Badgers. Tim Smith tallied the Mis sionary score on a four-yard run. Huskies Next For UO Ducks Portland (UPD Oregon's Duck's, riding high following a sweet 20-3 victory over Air Force, run into the tough Washington Huskies here next Saturday in a game which might decide the 1960 West Coast Rose Bowl entry. The Webf oots . have then work cut out for them. Wash ington lost 22-15 to mighty Southern California at Seattle after leading the Trojans late in the game. Scout Brad Eck lund reported Washington is as tough as its record, and is especially rough on defense. -Oregon" is' riding a five straight five - game winning streak. The 1957 Rose Bowl team also was riding a five game winning streak when it met Washington here. Final score: Washington 13, Ore gon 6. Coach Len Casanova was proud, but reserved, about his team following Saturday's game. He said he believed the 1957 team had more depths And he also felt the defense could be better on his present club. SOUCHAK WINS TOURNEY Greensboro, N. C.-ffiPD-Mike Souchak interrupted a brief vacation during the week-end to lead a group of professional golfers to victory over some of the South's best amateurs in the annual Carolinas Cup competition. The husky par buster, who has been resting up for the Ryder Cup matches next month, defeated Billy Joe Patton of Morganton, 2M to Vs. In Sunday's featured singles match. Washington had the unde feated Trojans on the string, 15-14, with 10 minutes to play but quarterback Willie Wood came in to restore order. Bob Schloredt, the Huskies signal caller, had swept left end for a score then crashed over for two more points to give his team a one point margin in the final quarter. Then Wood directed the winning drive, going from five yards out to score in person then passing to George Van Vlient for two more points. California twice took the lead over UCLA but was doomed to its fourth straight loss anyhow as tailback Bill Kilmer scored twice and Ray Smith scampered 48 yards for the third Bruin TD. Walt Ar nold and Grover Garvin tal lied for the Bears. George Pupich gave the Air Force a brief lead with a 23- yard field goal in the first period but the unbeaten Ducks struck back with a pair of touchdowns in the second period. First Win For C.O.P. Henry Wallac rammed over a couple of touchdowns ana Dick Bass tacked on a third from five yards out for COP s win over Marquette and the Tigers' first triumph of the season. Marquette, now losers in all five of its games, went ahead in the first period on Frank Mestnik's touchdown. Idaho grabbed a 10-0 ad vantage over Oregon State in the first period then the roof fell in on the Vandals. "We'd have been in bad trouble had we been going against a real strong club by being behind, 10-0 . .. .," Pro thro admitted. "I was real happy to see our team loosen up for a change, although we played the first part of the game just as we did the previous four week ends," the Beaver boss said. WIN AUTO RALLY Las Vegas, Nev. -UPD- Les Scott and Ted Sparks of Los Angeles today were declared official winners of the $10, 000 American International Auto rally. They turned in a near-perfect score in the 3,200 mile cross-country rally, earn ing a purse of $2,767. There were no serious mishaps and 60 of the 68 starters finished the event. McKibbin said that the Cru saders of Medford were hamp ered much by the absences of Terry Cooper and Mike Moore and the injury to Fred Lucas near the end of the first quarter. Cooper, offensive fullback, defensive tackle and the club's kicker, was sidelined by torn foot ligaments and Moore, a defensive end, has a broken nose cartilage. Lucas, halfback who moved into full back to fill in for Cooper, was hit in the leg and suffer ed a bruised bone. His exper ience was missed for the rest of the game. Forty Miners Head Statistics San Franciscc (DPD-The San Francisco Forty Niners, boast ing the best one-two rushing punch and the most impres sive statistics in the National Football league, find them selves in a tie for the Western division lead. ' San Francisco now looks ahead to next Sunday at Ke zar stadium for its important clash with the dangerous Chi cago Bears. The Forty Niners and Green Bay Packers are currently deadlocked for first place in the NFL Western di vision with 3-1 marks. The Los Angeles Rams are 2-2, Chicago is 1-3 and Detroit is winless in four starts. Statistically, the Forty Nin ers are far above-the NFL's other 11 teams. The Hickey- men have rolled up 112 points while allowing only 48. No other team has scored over a hundred points in four games and only the Cleveland Browns have yielded fewer points, with 41. Coach Hickey was enthusi astic about his team's much improved blocking and tack ling after Sunday's big win. HOCKEY NATIONAL LEAGUE United Press International The Detroit Red Wings are making monkey's out of the experts who picked them to renew their lease in the Na tional Hockey league base ment this season. In a pre-season poll con ducted by the Hockey News, eight of the 18 writers who cast ballots picked the Red Wings to wind up last again and none picked them to fin ish higher than fourth. They have gone unbeaten in their first five games. The Red Wings rolled to a 3-0 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs Sunday night. The Montreal Canadiens scored three goals in the final period to down the New York Rangers, 6-5, and the Boston Bruins tied the Chicago Black Hawks, 2-2, on a goal by Jerry Toppazzini with less than three minutes to play. AMERICAN LEAGUE United Press International A pair by goals by Larry Wilson within 39 seconds of the middle period helped the Buffalo Bisons gain their first victory of the new American Hockey League campaign Sunday night. . Wilson's back-to-back goals gave the Bisons a 3-1 lead and they went on from there to defeat Springfield, 4-2. The Rochester Americans maintained their winning ways by pounding out an 8-2 victory over the Cleveland Barons. About 84 persons were aboard the train but no one was hurt seriously. Nine of the 13 cars were Missing Men Safe Af Cottage Grove Sutherlin - (DPD - Two Cot tage Grove hunters walked out of the woods near here Sunday night as a rescue team and search parties were forming on Harness Mountain near Cottage Grove, j Virgil Moon, 32, and Lee Grimes, 36, told officers that their car had stopped running and they had to walk out of the wooded area.
