Youth Spends Past Summer Traveling Throughout U. S. Charley Goodman, 20, who spent the summer traveling throughout the United States, is expected home soon to visit his family on Griffin Creek rd. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted J. Goodman. Two sisters, Theodora and Sally, also are at home and an older brother, Jesse Lynn, is in the Navy. Charley, a graduate of Med ford High school and former Oregon State college student, left home last April to look for work in California. He wrote his family May 6 and 'did not contact them again until he sent a wire last week. He had visited 32 states since leaving California July 23 with a bed roll and $230. He sent his worried parents the wire after fellow work ers in Sacramento told him that they had seen. his pub lished picture and read that his family was seeking his whereabouts. His father, who is in charge of maintenance for Western Union in Klamath Falls, al ready had received several telegrams from pother persons indicating that Charley was r all right. One was from a woman in Salinas, Calif., who had met him on a guided tour of New York City. Mrs. Goodman said that they had also received a let ter earlier from a woman in Omaha, Neb., who said she had met Charley in New York. Because" of his apprehen sion, Charley's father trav eled to Sacramento to see for himself how his son was far ing, and found Charley em ployed in a peach cannery. Charley was surprised that the family had been worried. The woman in Nebraska told the Goodmans that Char ley plans to return to school, but the family will be happy just to see him return home. Pigmy Rattler Isn't Fatal But You'd Better Avoid Him As far as size is concerned, the so-called ground rattler does not amount to much. Neither does, the word "ground" indicate any out standing characteristic, as all snakes spend most of their lives on the earth. But these little fellows are ununusal inasmuch as they are about the smallest of the. rattlesnake family, so natural ly they are often called the "pigmy rattler." Seldom, if ever, do they exceed 18 inches in length, and they are about as large around as a lead pencil. But they are true rattle snakes with the power to strike, and equipped at birth with poison sacs and sharp fangs. They even have a set of diminutive rattles on the tail. Many people are bitten by this tiny rattlesnake, but seldom is the bite fatal. The bite does cause pain, swelling and a feeling of extreme nau sea. Like his larger relatives, the pigmy rattler rattles for all he's worth when excited, and strikes at the same time. However, the rattle does not have the ominous sound of the large rattlers. It sounds more like the buzzing of an insect. Usually the sound cannot be IHTEO 'lRROiW VO' ffBfe Small Worlds Around Us By Lynn M. Watkins heard over six oreight feet away, but at a closer approach by a tormentor the buzz be comes persistent. Surprising to hear all the fuss and fury from such a diminutive rep tile.' Silver Dollar Size When in a coil or striking position, the pigmy rattler doesn't look much larger than a silver dollar. Because of his small size, many children try to pick the reptile up, think ing it is cute. Drop for drop, this pocket-sized edition has a very potent venom, and in general his temper is as short as his body. Of course, a person bitten by a poisonous snake is affect ed in direct proportion to the amount of venom injected in relation to the victim's weight, or by volume. Naturally the amount of venom in the midg et rattler is rather small. The pigmy rattler has a' gray, slate-covered body, with a row of jet black saddles along the back. Interspersed in between these "black mark ings are dashes of a reddish hue. Ordinarily he lives in dry areas where low vegeta tion is growing, although some are found in or around low places such as swamps or marshes. It is misleading to -- , MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, r. , J J' Monday, Oct. 19, 1959 Tongue Point Sailors Hurt in Auto Upset Woodburn - (UPD - Three Tongue Point sailors were hospitalized by a Saturday night one-car crash on the Baldock freeway about two miles north of here. David O. Delker, 33, Robin C. Harmer, 20, and Charles J. Kemp, 22, were all taken to St. Vincent hospital in Portland. State police said the sailors' car slid off the freeway and overturned. state "they always live in dry areas." He's Pretty Actually, the ground rattler is a rather pretty little fellow, provided you can overcome your natural aversion to poi sonous reptiles and agree with the scientists that snakes are a beautiful and interesting form of animal life. For those few who are in terested in the anatomy of snakes, the scales on the top of the pigmy rattlesnake's head are a study in geometri cal arrangement ... a regu larly arranged shield on the top of the head. Like all mem bers of the Crotalus, they also have the deep pits on either side of the head located be tween the ear and the eye which indicates "pit vipers." They may be small, these Lilliputian rattlers, but they are vicious. Although their bite is seldom fatal to a hu man, they are enough like their larger cousins to war rant being left strictly alone.
