KE 5-1524 Credit Union Day Observed in Area Thursday, Oct. 15, was ob served as International Credit Union Day, when credit unions throughout the world g a v e special recognition to the movement. The first credit union was established in Germany in 1849 and was a non-profit or ganization, as they are today. The -first credit union was established in the United States in 1909 in New Hamp shire. Since that time, the number of credit unions established under federal and state char ters totaled 19,166 in the Uni ted States, representing 10, 721,595 members with assets amounting to $4,414,239,807. . SAVED BY PAD : New York (DPD A Brook lyn, truck driver probably owes his life today to an order pad he carries in his shirt pocket. Charles Hager, 23, told police that two armed thugs jumped on' the running board of his truck and tried to rob him Friday. When he attempted to shake them off, he said, one fired right at his heart. Saturday night. This was the authoritative USC Turns On Power To Win Seattle, Wash. (DPD - Sixth ranked Southern California turned on an awesome display of power in the final period Saturday to defeat Washing ton, 22-15, before 52,500 screaming, stomping fans in one of the greatest football games ever played in Husky stadium. Washington, the nation's 17 rated team, had gone ahead 15-14 with just over 10 min utes to go after Jerry Trayn ham fumbled Bob Schloredt's 47-yard punt on the Trojan 20 and Don Millich pounced the ball to set the stage for the touchdown. Washington worked it down, to the six. Then Schloredt,- a one-eyed quarterback from Gresham, swept around left end for the score and dove over tackle for the other two points. 'A sellout, homecoming crowd was really screaming then. But Willie Wood, fleet Trojan quarterback who had been injured, came in and masterminded TJSC's victory march. Traynham broke loose for 42 yards to Washington's 29. The Trojans drove down to the five, and Wood swung over for the winning score. Then he passed to George Van Vliet for two more points. " The matter will be put to the club's board of directors on Monday, United Press learned. UPI also learned on substantial authority that the decision in all probability will be to keep the baseball Sen ators in Washington. ' One source said there was a course of action -not listed in the recommendations - that could be followed: That the Griffith family stay in base ball and stay in Washington without any strings attached. This appeared to be the course that would be followed. ' Another expressed view was was that the "question is where the team will be in the league standing next year, not where they will be play Football Hall Adds 10 Names New Brunswick, N. J. DPD Doak Walker, Doc Blanchard and Charlie Trippi, three standouts of the '40's, were among 10 new members se lected for the National Foot ball Hall of Fame to be con structed here shortly. x Walker starred for South ern Methodist in 1947, '48 and '49, Blanchard played fullback for Army in 1945, '46 and '47, and Trippi was a star half back at Georgia in 1942, '45 and '46.
