St. Mary's In Crucial At Malm St. Mary's high of Medford meets the Malin Mustangs in a crucial district 5B football game Saturday afternoon on the Mustang gridiron. Talent, the only other 5B team in Jackson county will play host to Prospect in a non league game tonight. . St. Mary's will go into the game without Terry Cooper, the starting fullback. Cooper does all the kicking for the team. No. 2 fullback, Marv McKee, is also out with a side injury. Mike Moore is a doubt ful starter on defense because of a broken nose. To compen state for the big hole left when Cooper's foot was in jured Coach Bill McKibbin has moved Fred Lucas from halfback to fullback. Alex Mete will start at the vacated halfback spot. In the booting department Lucas will do the kicking off and Jim Calhoun will punt and kick the extra points. Offensive Starters Offensive starters will be Tom Tomjack at center, Don MacPherson and George Lu cas at the guards, Jim Valen tine and Mike Duggan at the tackles, Roger Hout and Ron Daley at the ends, Bob Evans at quarterback, Dick Evans and Mete at the halfbacks and Lucas at fullback. Defensive changes will switch Duggan from tackle to end and put Don Rausch at tackle. Practice this week has been on fundamentals. Coach Mc Kibbin stated, "if we beat Malin, it will be with funda mental football." He is hoping that the boys will not be down for the game after their out standing play in a 7 to 0 de feat at Yreka, Calif. Redding Slates Sunday Drags Redding, Calif - Northern California drag racers vie for the final time this season Sun day, Oct. 18, at Redding. Time trials will be conduct ed in the morning and the eliminations will take place in the afternoon. Site of the races will be municipal airport. Officials of the Shasta Road sters, Inc., races sponsor, said a good turnout of contestants is expected to make this one of the season's largest events. Dragster entries will at tempt to break the strip rec ord of 152 miles per hour, held by Paul Sutherland, Wal nut Creek, Calif. One Oregon entry shooting for this mark will be Noel Black, Medford. Black sped to a top speed of 134 mph to top all comers at last month's meet. The follow ing week he recorded 138 mph in Medford and now is finish ing a new dragster which he knows will be lighter, and he hopes faster, than the old one. In addition to this sleek Oldsmobile-powered speedster several other competition ma chines will be present from the southern Oregon region. Rain date for the meet has been set for Oct. 25. ORIOLES RECALL FOUR Baltimore (UPD - The Balti- mor Orioles recalled four of their farm hands today, in cluding their S125.000 "bonus baby," Dave Nicholson. Nich olson, a 20-year-old outfielder, was recalled from Aberdeen of the Northern league; sec ond baseman Marv Breeding and first baseman Ray (Bud dy) Barker from Vancouver of the Pacific Coast league, and outfielder Al Nagel from Amarillo of the Texas league. back, Cal Dean, has had eight of 16 throws completed for 100 yards. Heading the recep tion department are end Jerry Anderson with eight catches for 146 yards, end Lowell Dean with five for 130 and Hood with five for 129. Heading the defensive com bination in tackles has been Cal Dean with 36 while Reg gie Breeze has 29, Terry Earl 28, John James 22, Lowell Dean 19 and Dennis Jensen 18. Coach Fred Spiegelberg said that 38 members of the deep in talent Medford squad were to make the trip to Klamath Falls. He reported that right halfback Len Griggs, who has been on the sidelines because of a shoul der injury, is ready again for duty. Lowell Dean will be in action again after missing the Crater game because of a broken nose. Against the favored Tor nado, the Pelicans of Klamath will send a good combination of both experienced and young players. They have eight gridders on the varsity from last year's strong fresh man team. Two of these, quarterback Gary Buchholz and fullback Larry McClure, are starters while two others, Kent Hunsaker and Earl Brin son, are regular defensive halfbacks. McClure, also, is a regular defensive linebacker and Hunsaker is a reserve on offense. Veterans have the other starting roles. Promising Sophs Medford has its promising sophomores, too, but they, with Medford's great grid re-i sources, are overshadowed for the most part by the more ex perienced players. There are no Tornado starters among the sophomores. They have the understudy roles. For Klamath, coach Bob Williams wing " T relies on running by such-ball toters as Ron Olyera, Blake Griggs, McClure, Hunsaker and Buch holz and on passing by Buch holz, Hunsaker and Griggs. Among receivers are the pre viously named backs, Bill San to, Dave Stippich and ends Wayne Dennis, Larry Bun yard and Estin Kiger. Klamath has not beaten Medford since 1953 when it repulsed the Tornado 26 to 18 on Modoc field. But the Peli cans tied the Big Wind 13-each in 1955. Since then Medford has won 47 to 19, 33 to 14 and 53 to 0. The Tornado won the 1954 mix 13 to 0. Back in 1945, a Medford team lashed the Whitebirds 51 to 0. As a rule, since that time, the Pels have been tough birds on their home turf. That 33 to 14 out come two years ago was Med ford's first win at Modoc field since 1948.
