The National Council had only one really important leg islative function-approval of the budget. Rainier said mem bers were deliberately delay ing its passage, endangering the timetable for public works projects involving millions of dollars and challenging the supreme authority of the sov ereign. Dorcas societies are the Seventh-day Adventist church's organi zation for welfare and disaster relief work, having been named for the biblical Dorcas. " Carl Guenther, associate secretary of the . denomina tion's world organization in the welfare department, was a guest at the all-day meeting. Other guests included C. J. Richie, Oregon Conference home missionary - secretary, W. R. Risston;' and Mrs. Lela Wood, Dorcas leader of the Roseburg, Ore., church. Pas tor Risston and Mrs. Wood told the group of the aid given by the Roseburg Dorcas so ciety in the recent disaster in that city. Since it was the so ciety's first experience in a real disaster, the Roseburg guests were able to suggest to Federation representatives ways in which they might bet ter prepare themselves to ren der efficient service in a sim ilar event. According to reports given to the group, the system of combining a group of Dorcas societies into a Federation be gan in Chicago 25 years ago and has since grown to 232 Federations, combining 2590 kelfare units in North Amer ica. There are now 24 wel fare depots in ' the United States, and Canada where food, clothing, and other sup plies are stockpiled for dis tribution to disaster areas throughout the world. Four of these depots now have equipment for complete hos pital units. ,'" - Nearest depot to the Med ford area is located in Wat sonville, Calif- and in the past five months, according to reports given at the Sunday meeting, 7,854 articles of clothing and 102 pair of shoes have been sent to the Califor nia depot. In the same period of time, 497 articles of cloth ing were given away locally, in addition to a number of packages, of food, bedding, cooking utensils, and some ar ticles of furniture, with a to tal of 131 people helped in this community. '.' The Medford society main tains a welfare center located behind the church building on the corner of Edwards and Beatty. The center is open to the public from 10 a.m." to 4 p.m. each Wednesday, and anyone in the area needing help may apply. Plans are being made by the local society to equip and maintain a mobile unit for disaster use. Honored Queen Barbara Gordon pre sided at the session. Plans were made for a hay- ride and wiener roast Satur day, October 17. Members planning to attend will meet at the Pythian hall at 7 p.m They will ride to the Norris ranch on Cherry lane and re turn to the hall around 11 o'clock ' The next regular meeting will be a Halloween party with the Ashland Bethel Oc tober 27. Members are asked to wear costumes. Waggin Wheelers To Hold Dances In Medford Hall Waggin Wheelers Square Dance club will hold a dance in the Carpenters' Union hall, 123li West Main st., Med ford, starting at 8:30 p.m. Sat urday. . The club's dances, the first and third Saturdays each month, will be held in the hall since Kershaw Square on Cory road closed recently. The Carpenters' Union hall is across Main street from Weeks and Orr Furniture company. All square dancers are in vited and . potluck refresh ments will be served. Fittingly, this new acreage -which probably will be the site of luxury hotels - is along "Avenue Princess Grace"," named in honor of his lovely wife. Rainier has many other projects under way, some for his subjects, such as low-cost housing, and some to attract tourists. Among the latter are an "oceanarium" as an ad junct to the famous oceanog raphic museum founded by his family, a sports palace and an all-year-'round swimming pool in th2 port. Former Legislator Reports To Portland-"Today it is evi- dent that military alliances are not enough to contain the thrust of Communism," Mrs. Maurine Neuberger told the Portland chapter of the League of Women "Voters at a luncheon Wednesday. Mrs. Neuberger made the statement during a report on her attendance as a delegate to the NATO Congress in London, saying that it was one of the great experiences of her life. ' The former three -term member of the Oregon Legis lature said that her service not only opened new vistas of foreign policy but also con vinced her that the United States needs far more teach ing and training in foreign languages, so that the citi zens of this country can com municate more effectively with their friends and allies. Mrs. Neuberger, now a board member of the United Nations association, described the pageantry of the occasion and said she was thrilled to be able to come home to Port land to tell her neighbors: "I've been to London to see the Queen!" Mrs. Neuberger described the ceremony in Westminster Abbey1, where the Queen ad dressed the NATO Congress, as "beautiful and impressive -but more than that." "Time and again as the Congress progressed we referred in our committees to the words of the Queen because she em phasized that respect for free dom of the individual and simple faith in God were the cost without even dipping into the f at s u r p 1 u s in its treasury. Rainier is on good, if not in timate terms with Aristotle Socrates Onassis, the shipping man who controls the Societe des Bains de Mer which runs the gambling casino and some of the hotels. But it is no se cret he would like his coun try to be completely independ ent of gambling income. The tourist drive is one means to this end. In 1919, the Societe accounted for 48 per cent of the Monacan govern ment income. This year it is 300 million francs out of a Monacan income of 6 billion francs or only some four per cent. Idyllic Life Rainier and Grace lead per haps the most idyllic life of any ruling couple anywhere. The Prince sometimes sheds the cares of state to slip down to the blue Mediterranean and skin dive or water ski. One of his pet projects now is reno vating his new yacht-a three masted schooner of the kind which carries fruit from Spain to the Canary Islands and back. They have a fleet of auto mobiles and are considering a helicopter which would speed the trip to Nice airport. They move freely and informally about Monaco and ofter at tend the theater or ballet there or in Paris or other places. The happiness brought him by his marriage to Grace Kel ly and his family have given Rainier a sense of mission. He wants Monaco to be a cultural center and has sponsored or chestral concerts in the court yard of the palace and sent the orchestra on tour. He awards an annual literary prize. "I would also like more in ternational meetings, of the type we can accommodate," he said. He mentioned as an example the International Bu reau of Atomic Energy which convenes here in November to discuss the possible effects of sinking atomic waste prod- j ucts into sea water.
