Some already are stirring or being stirred by political friends. A few candidacies may not reach full bloom un til convention time next sum mer.. , glorida officals think Sen. George A. JSmathers (D-Fla.) may announce his formal ac ceptance of a draft as that state's "favorite son" at a lunch in Miami Friday. Chandler Enters Race In Asheville, N.C., Ken tucky's ever-running presi dential aspirant, Gov. A. B. (Happy) Chandler, brightened the Southern Governors Con ference with the ' ord that he'll be in the Democratic presidential race next year. Democratic governors, who outnumber Republican state leaders- 35 to 15. dominate the list of "probable or po tential favorite sons. They include California's Edmund G (Pat) Brown, Ohio's Michael V. Disalle, Michigan's G. Mennen (Soapy) Williams, and New Jersey's Robert B. Meyner. Other pos sibilities are Colorado's Step hen L. R. McNichols and Washington's Albert D. Rose! lini. Among Republican govern ors in this category are Wil liam G. Stratton . of Illinois and Cecil H. Underwood of West Virginia. New York's Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller, if he gntered the GOP presi dential race, would be far more than just a favorite son candidate. Automatic Favorite Sons ,The Senate's four ranking Democratic presidential pos sibilities are automatic fav orite son candidates if they never reach greater conven tion glory. They are Sens. John F. Ken nedy of Massachusetts, Hub ert H. Humphrey of Minne sota, Stuart Symington of Mis souri and Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas. , . Some of the declines from the highs ran to big figures. Thiokol Chemical, for ex ample, touched 85 for a net gain of ZVz points. It fell to a net loss of a point. Other chemicals moved narrowly. U.S. Borax, a rocket fuel maker along with Thiokol, fell moie than a point. Allied Chemical rose more than a point. DOW-JONES AVERAGES New York -ITPD- Dow Jones final stock averages: Young Demos To Get Red China Proposal ': Stevens Point, Wis: - (UPD -The National Convention of Young Democratic Clubs will be asked to endorse de facto recognition of Red China, it was announced today. Lead ers of the Wisconsin delega tion said they will introduce the recognition plan at the convention in Toledo, Ohio, Nov. 19-21. Freeman arrived here Mon day and declared that the out come of the May primary in Oregon will have a lot to do with who gets the Democratic nomination for president in 1960. , Freeman, here to help get the campaign for Sen. Humphrey, still an " unde clared candidate, was in Ore gon all last week speaking throughout the state. The 41-year-old governor, a former classmate of Humphrey, said he thought the senator-would announce his stand after the first of the year. Freeman said that Hum phrey "expects to be in- the Oregon primary and he' ex pects to win it." Navy Camera To Survey Sunken Ships Washington -(UPD- The Navy reports it has an underwater television camera that can make visual surveys of sunk en ships more than 600 feet below surface. The camera is mounted in a self - propelled vehicle and can be controlled from ',, the surface. It can hover at any desired depth in currents of several knots. . The camera housing also carries an under water lighting system. Chinese Troops Grab Outpost in India Calcutta, India (UPD T h e Hindustan Standard reported today that Communist troops from China have seized a sec ond outpost on India's 'north east frontier. A dispatch from Shillong said Red Troops have seized Khinzeman's outpost in the Kameng district as ' well as Longju, the outpost in the Su- bansiri district which had pre viously been reported in Com munist hands.' CHOLERA OUTBREAK Dacca, Pakistan. -(UPD- At least 300 persons died within the last few days in a -wide spread outbreak of cholera in the district of this capital of East Pakistan, unofficial re ports showed today. Washington - (CPD - Presi dent Eisenhower already has received a flock of gifts rang ing from a 440-pound baby elephant to a silver-plated golf putter and his 69th birth day isn't until Wednesday. The President's other pres ents included a hand-tooled leather golf bag from Mexi can newspaper, radio and TV reporters, three red oak trees and a cake from the Republi can National Committee and the Senate and House GOP campaign committees, and. a life-size bust of Eisenhower from visiting Mexican Presi dent Adolf o Lopez Mateos. Eisenhower, mean while, gave a gift of his own. The White House disclosed that he presented Lopez Mateos with a pale blue 1960 Ford Falcon, one of the new economy-sized American made automobiles. The 14-month-old" male Af rican elephant, given to Eisen hower Monday at a' -ceremony on the White House lawn on behalf of the French Com munity of Nations, was not exactly a birthday president. The waist - high elephant, named Dzimbo, just happen ed to arrive in the midst of several days of celebrations marking Eisenhower's birthday. Dzimbo was turned over to the Washington Zoo. The putter, a replica of golf immortal Bobby Jones famous "Calamity Jane'' club, was a gift from the White House Correspondents Associ ation. Jones presented it tff the surprised President at the group's birthday banquet Monday night. The golf bag and the bust also were presented at the stag dinner. .' Round Butte Dam Hearing Continues Portland -(UPD- The Oregon Water Resources Board hear ing here into the proposed $71 million Round Butte dam on the Deschutes river was in its second day today. The hearing ends Wednesday .- The board, reviewing Port land General Electric com pany's application for a li cense to build the 440-foot pro ject, heard testimony by both opponents and proponents. A Warm Springs Indian res ervation delegation voiced favor of the dam with other endorsements from the Salem and Beaverton Chambers of Commerce. Associated Indus tries of Oregon also went on record favoring it. Fishing Boat Sinks In Georgia Strait . Seattle -(UPD- A 28-foot fish boat burned and sank in the southern end of the Georgia Strait Monday night, Coast Guard headquarters announc ed here. A Border Patrol vessel picked up John L. Harrison, Bellingham, who was the only person aboard the gillnetter when it caught fire. Harrison had : managed to leave the burning boat in a small skiff.
