The site for the present Gold Hill Community Metho dist church was chosen be cause it is a central location and easier for the older peo ple to get to since it is on level ground. Built Fixe Nearly 40 years" ago a smal1 boy who lived with his par ents across the street would rise early every Sunday morning and go to the old Methodist Episcopal church, where he built the fires in the Polaris heating stove. At that time It stood in the center of the approximately 20 by 30- foot one room church build ing.. . Several years later this same stove was moved to the present church basement where it had been used con tinuously until the new fur nace was installed. ( On fellowship night, old Polaris, the second part of the "black monster" was pur chased by one of the men in the community who bought it because of sentimental rea sons, as well as to heat the basement in his home. This man was the small boy who had tended the church fires. Funds from the sale of the stove were placed in the "black monster fund," which was started several months ago to finance the new heat ing system. A container for donations for this project i3 placed each Sunday on a table at the rear of. the sanc tuary so that those who wish may. make a contribution. Old Polaris had been used for over 50 years to warm the hands and feet of those at tending Sunday school on cold winter mornings. Some longtime residents of the community recall that there was a Meth odist church building behind the city hall. Then, for many years the church was at the location on Fifth ave. where the county shop is now lo cated. ,i The old Methodist Episco pal church building was mov ed about 1911-12 to the hill side location on Fifth ave. where it was put onto its foundation and repaired after considerable delay due to hard times. The repairing to the old Methodist Episcopal church was carried on mainly by donated work. Prior to this time, the pas torate supervision had been varied, sometimes Gold Hill having been alone and other times in connection with Jack sonville or Central Point. During the conference year 1909-10 Gold Hill belonged to the Central Point charge and regular services were held un til about June. The Sunday school was discontinued for a time in the summer. Following the establish ment of regular services an adult Bible class was organ ized which increased to 80 members about 1912-13. This class, it is recalled, held a large place in the social life of the church and community, holding monthly social and business meetings. Soon after the organization of the adult class, a young people's class was organized with a membership of 22. Piano Debt About 1917, through the ef forts of the Bible class, the last payment on the piano debt was paid. It is believed that the piano is the same one that is still in use at the present MERE NOW ARE i '': "SUPERLATIVE .irWEW CHEVROLET?
