Te U.S. Public Health Service sajd it had "no ready explanation" for the slight in crease, but thought spring rains may havewashed a lit tle more strontium-90 out of the sky than normally would have fallen. It predicted July August - September figures would show a general de crease. Of 47 stations that reported readings in both quarters, 33 showed slight increases. Only 13 reported a drop in radio activity, and one held steady for both quarters. The highest level was re corded on the Tennessee riv er near Chattanooga.
