Mrs. Ransom Smith was called to McDowell, Ky., re- cently due to the death of her father, John Newman, who -.was making his home with ' an elderly sister. He died in , Paintsville, Ky., on Sept. 16. ., Burial was in the Woodland - cemetery in Rogue River Tuesday, Sept. 22. . - Survivors include seven ' sons and one daughter, Con Newman of Atwater, Calif.; Richard Newman of McDow ell, Ky.; Diamond and John l" Newman of Lakeview; Harry Newman of Yreka, Calif ; Sam Newman, Grants Pass; Ralph Newman of Medford and Mrs. Grace . Smith of , Hilts; 38 grandchildren, and 0 48 great grandchildren. , Mrs. Ed Stalety's mother, Mrs. James (Maude) Spearin - of Hornbrook died recently. ' Burial was in the Hornbrook Henley cemetery. " Survivors, besides her bus band, are Carl Spearin of Rumsey, Viola Murphy of Salinas, Lester Spearin of An derson, Jessie Frasier of Mon- t tague, Anita Staley of Hilcs and Jimmie Spearin of Horn brook and 16 grandchildren. Several friends gathered at the home of Mrs. Art Blan chard recently to honor the birthday of Mrs. Art Hart man. Pinochle was played and gifts were presented to the honoree. Places of in terest visited -, were Knott's Berry Farm, Disneyland and ' the zoo at San Diego. Hrs. Donivan Ward and Frank Ward drove to Klam ath Falls recently to visit Ward's daughter, Mrs. L. H. Gilchrist, who was a patient "at the Hillside hospital. visitors Wednesday at the home of Mrs: Bess Maguire were Mrs. William Kleaver Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1959 of Yreka and Frank Maguire of Los Angeles. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Wolff of Phoenix called at the Van de Weghe home Tuesday. They were en route to Ox nard. . Visiting Sunday at the H. G. Thompson home were Mrs, George Potucek and daugh ter, Cheryl and Mrs. Pearl Marin, of Medford, and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Viers and three girls, Inez, Raylene and Glenette, also of Medford. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Bern heisel and children and Mrs. Bernheisel's father from Ar kansas, visited at the Osie Bernheisel home recently. - Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Royce of Ashland were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Wissen bach Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Wil liams and Mrs. Vi Bagley made a recent trip by bus to visit relatives In Sacramento. Mr. and Mrs. Carlos God- dard visited for several weeks at the homes of Mr. and Mrs. William Roush and Mr. and Mrs. O. M. Goddard in Talent Goddard is with the . Army and was on furlough from base in Oklahoma. . Sunday, Sept. 20, was the 34th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Osie Bernheisel and was celebrated with a family dinner. Others preseit were their daughter, " Mrs. Robert Goodwin and grand daughters, Linda and Donna. Mrs. Roy Rushton and Mrs. Max Terzenbach of Medford visited Thursday afternoon at the home - of . Mrs. Rushton's parents, Mr.- and Mrs. Dick Williams. The group drove to Yreka to visit other relatives. Lloyd Jones,' stationed with the Air Force at Lackland Air base, in Texas, visited Lfriends here recently. Jones is the son of the J. E. Jones', former residents now-making their home in Redding. Mr. and Mrs. Ransom Smith vacationed for two weeks at Diamond lake. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Haynes visited recently at the home of Mr. and Mrs.' Freddie Haynes Jr. and family in Red ding. - ' - Mr. and Mrs: Roger Smith and daughter recently moved back to Hilts and are living in one of the apartments. Smith was employed in' the Camp White area; for several months and during that time they were living near there. Word has been received of the birth of a girl to Mr. and Mrs. Louis' Oakley, former residents now living in Loyal- ton, Calif. She was born on Sept. 10 and has been named Tammie Kay. Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Phillips of Redlands are guests ol their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. 'Bob Burns, and family. Phillips has retired and is planning to make his home in this area. Mrs. John Endiam of River side, Calif., is a guest at the home of Mr. and ' Mrs. F. L. Burns. ' - : . : Mrs. Ernest Spannaus was hostess to 'the-first fall meet ing of the Bridge club at her home recently with -i four members attending. They were Mrs. M. G. King, Mrs. Fred Haynes, , Mrs. Frank Graves and Mrs. Al Simmons. Bobby Ferguson, son of Mr. and Mrs. . Robert , Ferguson was guest of honor at a party recently to celebrate his. sec ond birthday. The charter was draped for Cecil B. John son, who was a charter mem ber of Gold 'Hill Grange. This is the second time in the last few weeks that, the charter has been draped, the other time in memory of Car rie, Puhl,. who was also a charter member of the Gold Hill Grange: . Members were entertained hy dancers from the Colleen Hppe studio. The children, Debbie Taylor and Rickey Korner, live in Central Point and - were accompanied by their mothers. Also on Jhe program were a couple of readings, "To Day"., by Leona Jenks and "Safety, First and Last" by Dorothy -Eskew. ' . 1 The Grange voted to re ceive Stanley and Ramona Foley as members. " Regarding agriculture, sev eral members - stated that there- had already been frosts in the valley. . A. A. iWalker gave some information on flood control and the different aspects of reclamation of the Rogue ba sin, and the Grange voted to stand back of this project. . . Herman Kamping, insur ance agent, reported on in surance rates, and the cost "of rural fire protection.: In re gard to this last, the prange is now circulating petitions to secure rural protection. Don Morrow sent ina re quest to use the' dining room for a breakfast to be' put on by the Gold Hill Lions club Noy. 1. This request was granted.- PLans are in progress for the booster night program to be. held at the hall Monday, Oct. 12. Kamping also stated Grif fin Creek is having its booster night Oct. 22.
