Y. IH1 igh-Cated Saxons, Tornado Clash on Turf Mere Tonight Two of the top-ranked high school football teams in" Ore gon collide tonight at the Medford stadium. South Salem's strong Sax ons are guests of the Medford Black Tornado. Kick-off time is 8 p.m. For Medford, the engage ment will be its last tune-up for the Southern Oregon con- tul "1C , uVft ference slate. But, the fracas will be more than just a warm-up. There's that matter of prestige with the Black Tornado rated the A-l No. 1 and the Saxons No. 5. Contention shapes up as a match of speed against speed and power between clubs which are almost perennially in recent years the leaders in their respective loops. South Salem has speed. That's a Saxon trademark and the fleet footed men of the Salem T offense are Rod Harp, Kim Clark and Kenny Sawyer. The Black Tornado has speedsters, too, and a dearth of hard-running backs for Its multiple attack. Skip Bennett Mike Hood and Dan Sieg have been the major packers but they are not the only ones who can tote the ball for deep in talent Med ford. There's Ken Durkee, Len Griggs, Phil Humphreys and Jim Barry, just for in stance. Passing. Too And, Medford has quarter backs Dick Ragsdale and Ray Konopasek, ends Lowell'Dean and Jerry Anderson and re ceiving backs to make the passiftg go. Salem reportedly has not used passing much this season and quarterback Steve Stewart hasn't dis played his wares. Yet, this could be the game when the Saxon aerial game blossoms out. i The Tornado is the favored club on the basis of the home field and greater depth. Med ford may have the edge in weight but difference is be lieved not so great as the pro grams show. In South Salem favor is its desire for upset against a higher rated club. Also, lack of fire and ragged- ness have been noted m Tor nado drills this week. Med forflites, however, may have been saving their all for the big ruckus tonight. The Capital city tqpm comes here for the non-league game as favorite in its own District 8 while Medford is rated team to beat in District 6. Last year marked the only season that Coach Lee Gustafson's Saxons have not tried for or won their loop diadem since the school opened in 1954. Fred Spiegelberg assumed the Medford helm in 1952. Med ford has been Southern Ore gon conference champion or co-champ every year since then, except in 1953. . The Crusaders unbeaten in three games go for their third straight conference win and a strengthening of their first place position. Game time will be 7:30 p.m. Main concentration this week has been on the offen sive game with a lot of work being done on the passing at tack. Coach Bill McKibbin said that the Crusaders plan more of an air attack this game. Starting offensive line for the Crusaders will include Tom Tomjack at center, George Lucas and Don Mac Pherson at guards, Jim Val entine and Mike Duggan at tackles, and Roger Hout and Ron Daley at ends. Mete's Back Better ' Halfbacks will be Fred Lu cas and Dick Evans. At full back position will be Terry Cooper, while the quarterback will be Bob Evans. Med SIPflDlFLr Injury to Cripples Ashland Losing key foot ball players seems to be the style at Southern Oregon col lege while the Red Raiders prepare for their game with Linfield college tomorrow night in McMinnville. - Eldon Francis, top ground gainer of the Raiders, was in jured in scrimmage play yes terday and doctors fear he has some torn ligaments. Side lining Francis would take away the Raiders' top running threat and put a serious damper on their hopes of an upset over the Wildcats. There was still some hope the Med ford speedster would be able to play after the x-rays re vealed no broken bones. Purik Biddington will move over to play the tailback spot in all probability and Bud Kastner will fill in Bidding ton's wingback slot. Bransom Reports Two bright spots did hit the Raider encampment this week when another speed merchant, Doyle Bransom, ex Jacksonville high, reported and Jim Dietz began gaining praise for his pass receiving from the split end slot. Bransom, just a freshman, impressed the coaching staff with his running from the wingback position. He will be one of the new faces on the traveling squad this week. " Dietz, who gained athletic fame in baseball for SOC, is a sprinter and of late he . has caught 14 consecutive passes in the Raider scrimmages. Other than the jumble in the case o' Francis, the Raider lineup will be the same align ment that opened at Chico. Jack Brown has been in stalled to lead the attack from the beginning but he will al ternate with Lance Locke. Al len Barnes will remain the fullback starter and John Buck will be his main under study in addition to playing on the defensive unit. Line Starters Gordy Carrigan and Jim McAbee are the ends, Troy, Bellah and Willie Garner the tackles, Tony Brauner and Jim Tacchini the guards, and Pointers Win Over South GP Central Point - Vern Swan son made touchdown runs of 80, 60 and 50 yards yesterday as the Central Point eighth grade football aggregation licked South Grants Pass 26 to 6. Dave Twedell went two yards off a drive for the other score. Grants Pass tallied in the third quarter. The Pointers led 12 to 0 at the quarter and 19 to 0 at the half.
