About 50 yers ago the Val ley of Ten Thousand Smokes was covered completely with cfebris and hot ashes by one of history's greatest volcanic eruptions. All trace of life was destroyed. An area was thus created ; that was considered quite comparable to the an cient surface of the earth be tore the most primitive forms of plant life first appeared. A report on how plant life started to reassert itself amid "he smoking desolation, and how it has developed during te - interim - years, has just been published by the Smith sonian Institution here. Emenras ; Professor of Hedicina. Hay CUtda ' to know why such a child was born to them. I have just re viewed much of the literature on the subject, and this, to gether with my own experi ence with some of the fami lies, satisfies me that the main cause is a hereditary one. This , does not mean: .that there usually are other mon: goloids or some feeble-minded children in the family. This happen, and there are families on record in which there were two or three or even four mongoloids among a sib-ship (group of brothers and sisters). In one of my cas es, out of five children born to a couple, the second was a mongoloid and the fourth was an ordinary feeble-minded child. The father was a ne'er-do-well who told me that he thought he had been psy chotic all his life. The reason that, so far, lit tle has been said about here dity is that no one sems to have recorded what actually was wrong with all the mem bers of the family of a mon goloid. So long as there was no other mongoloid known in the clan, the nervous heredity was assumed to be "normal." All Sorts of Defects The parents of the last mon-' goloid boy I saw recently said, at first, that their people were very normal nervously. But when I inquired particularly about parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and children, I got a story of all sorts of defects. I found rela tives with-a cancerous goiter, psoriasis of the skin, arthritis, three with congenital heart disease, one with a harelip, three with pernicious anemia (in the mongoloid's mother, his mother's mother, and his sister), and two with Osgood Schlatter's disease (a heredi tary disease 'of an ankle bone). Certainly this family has a strong tendency to defects. v Desi Arnaz Forfeits, tail on Drunkenness Hollywood - (BPD -; Actor- producer Desi Arnas forfeited $21 bailWednesday ratner. than appear in Municipal Court on a drunk charge.
