The game will be at 8 pjn. at the Medford stadium. siPdDnBsrs Ashland Entertains Crater High Crew Ashland Ashland high's Grizzlies face the Crater high football team here 'Friday night intent on-making up for the 40 to 13 shellacking suffered at, the hands of the Comets last fall. It will be. a non-league game. Basic fundamentals of blocking and tackling have had emphasis in workouts this week, Grizzly coach Var ney Corey reported. Black A school at which the pro duction of frontrunner foot ball teams has been the rule, rather than the exception, will provide the opposition for Medford high this Friday when the Black Tornado takes on the South Salem Saxons at 8 p.m. at the Medford stadium. The Saxons, after slipping to a tie for third in 1958, are favored to regain the District 8 A-l championship this fall. Last year's finish was the low est for South Salem since the school opened in 1954. In fact, it's won or shared the title in every other year. In 1954 the Saxons0 shared the state diadem with Marshf ield. Sword was having trouble with tied muscles in his back but it ap pears he will start at center on offense and linebacker on defense. ' Coach AI Akins has also been shifting his defensive alignment in an effort to in stall more speed and sacrifice some beef.- Gordy Carrigan and Jim McAbee will get the starting assignments at the ends again this week with Jim Tacchini and Tony Brauner slated for guard duty. The tackles will remain the same with Wild Willie Garner and Troy Bel lah on hand. . Talent Has First Home Grid Game Talent High school, fresh from its 14 to 12 win over Childquin, the first win re corded .by a Bulldog football team in two years, has spent the past week in preparation for its initial home game this Friday nights It plays Bonanza at 8 p.m. Main stress this week has been on defense for the Bull dog footballers. There has been concentrated work on stopping both running and passing attacks, in hopes that they will be able to halt the thrusts of the Antlers. There also has been some work on smoothing out the wrinkles in Talent's own offense. Listed by Coach Don Moore as starting players on offense were, John Kerns, center; Doyle Leek and Jerry Moore, guards; Morris Sterrett and Ernest Casland, tackles; and Tom Burnett and Bob Dickin son, ends. St. Mary's Plays Backfield consists of Don Skundrick and Bob Jacobs, halfbacks; Mike Jacobs, fullback,- and Ed Seaver, quar terback. There will be! two changes on the defensive team with Fred Tycksen going in at a linebacker and Albert Back playing an end position. Larry Bradford, a regular starting tackle, won't be able to play this week end. St. Mary's, the only other class B school in Jackson county that is playing football in the 5B district, will Vie at home Saturday night. The Crusaders will entertain Chil oquin at the Medford High school stadium. of the Saxons fairly good size. Listed weights show it lighter than Medford's but there's been considerable speculation in the Black Tornado camp that the actual weights are heavier han the program fig ures. Possible offensive starters in the line are Don Waller and Covert, ends; Scott Nelson and Bennett, tackles; Rick Nelson and Ron Case, guards; and Gary Walls, center. Gustafson's Saxon offense has been the T with unbalg anced line tS the left. He uses the single wing on occasion, but Bigham says .not so far this year. P o Look For Third Win South Salem is looking for its third victory in four games while the Black Tornado will be out to make it four straight. Offense was An in another 45 minutes of dummy scrimmage and there was tackling and punt return drill. ; End Lowell Dean and tack le Lynn Knight were back with the squad yesterday. Dean had missed Tuesday's workout because of a cold dhd Knight was absent because of a hip ailment. However, Spie gelberg reported troubles to the depth at the right half slot. Mike Hood was healthy but Len Griggs was hSbbled by a sore shoulder and Jim Barry by sore feet. Looking good last night at the position was Jim bcnmiat, . a junior. And.
