Mc U lie Reco u rits Experiences On Oregon's Wagon What began as a promotion gimmick became a genuine piece of history, George Mc Une said Monday of the Ore gon Centennial wagon caval cade in which he participated last spring and summer. .McUne recounted some of the trials' and triumphs of the trek from Independence, Mo., to Independence, Ore., for an appreciative audience at the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce roundtable lunch con in the Jackson hotel's Pio neer Room.- ' Tornadoes, hail storms and some 11 raids by more or less authentic Indians could be counted among the hafards of the modern-day trail, accord ing to McUne.. . ; .. ; The Indians, he said, were generally friendly - but while no scalps were lost, a fair amount of sleep, when raids came in the middle of the night,, definitely was. Principal Challenge . ; One of the cavalcade's prin cipal challenges, McUne re lated, was staying on the true Oregon Trail. There was dang er of criticism from local his torians if the wagons did not go exactly where these watch ful experts thought they sfbuld. But the wagoneers were simply following instruc tions, he added - and the town merchants thought the parade past their doors would help business. The theme was "School Daze" and the freshman class was honored. The dance ended at 11:30. Charles Porter, representa tive from the fourth district of Congress spoke .to the seniors of Crater High school Thurs day. He began his . talk by telling something about - his job. He is now in the process of meeting people who would like to talk to him.. He receives approximately one hundred letters a day, mostly inquiries and opinions. He, himself, answers . about two-thirds of them, he said. His discourse was on free dom, peace and earning a liv ing. The Student Council, com posed of .Bob Gardner, Char lie Warren, Connie . McDon iough, Patti Straus, Sally Bai ley and Advisor Don Miller, left for Marshfield Sunday, Sept. 27, to attend a Student Council Workshop, Monday. They returned Tuesday, Sept. 29. .". McUne said she turned out to be the president of the local historical society, standing at the site of the original Fort Carney with the intention of making some sort of formal presentation. Frequent Question One of the questions most frequently asked him by chil dren, McUne said, was "Whad daya do in real life?" (McUne is proprietor of the Court St. Auto Repair shop in Medf ord.) He reported that on one oc casion he had been given and still had in his possession - a scroll making Medford John W. Snider an admiral in the Nebraska Navy. Mayors in many towns along the way, McUne noted, did the cooking themselves at functions hon oring the "pioneers." Speaking of the cavalcade's historical role, he reported that in one town the partici pants' names were to be en graved on a bronze plaque. McUne said he always car ried guns, and tried to make a point of shooting at least once in every town. Once, he said, he was hustled off to jail - as a joke, of course. Boys along the way, he recalled, would yell "Draw!" Help Set Up Camp But he reported singular success in persuading the youngsters to pitch in and help the cavalcade members when camp was made.. ' . McUne, who drove Rogue Valley's entry in the wagon train, said his team of mules had to be shod 10 times during the trip. He said he estimated that one mule", Fibber, took a total of 3,692,500 steps in the course of the trek. ' - '' Both animals, McUne re ported, tended to shuffle along the trail. He said he was tempted to put roller-skates on Molly, the other member of the team. Asked about being passed by Mrs. Emma Gatewood, the walking grandmother from Gallipolis, Ohio, who jour neyed west on foot, McUne said "We , weren't running a race." Portland Crashes Claim Elderly Men " Portland (UPD - Two elderly men died Tuesday in sepa rated Portland-area traffic ac cidents. John William Newquist, 76, Portland, was injured fatally at Clackamas when pinned under his car following a col lision with an oil truck. His wife was injured. . Mike Kleiner, 82, Portland, died Tuesday night from in juries suffered earlier in the day when he was struck by a car in southeast Portland. Lonergan in which to work out an out-of-court settlement in their dis pute over Tiver pollution. Last spring the State Sani tary Authority " filed suit against Portland to bring court action in an attempt to force the city to cease dumping un treated sewage into the Wil lamette and Columbia rivers. Judge Lonergan said. Tues day he thought the city was efforting to comply with regu lations and gave it another 60 days in the hope a settlement could be reached out of court. Hobo Jungle To Be Fenced at Portland Portland-(UPD-City ; officials Tuesday said they were going to fence off what they called a hobo jungle under the west end of the Steel bridge. Mayor Terry Schrunk said the area has been the scene for. "skid-road rollings and even murder." The city council agreed to pay $500 of the $1500 cost of the fence. The Union Pacific railroad will pay $1000.' Both the city and the railroad own part of the land. Boston police said Willem Marie Louis Van Rye of Hol land told detectives he had had an "affair"' with the di vorcee on the voyage f r o m Singapore" to New York, and had beaten' her.; But he said he had no knowledge of how she went overboard. Questioned Through Night ; , Van Rye was arrested to day after being questioned through the night by Boston and New: York police. Boston authorities said they would seek a murder warrant against him -in-Boston. Authorities did not say im mediately how they were led to Van Rye as a suspect. While Moore isn't going to match the inventiveness and excitement generated by the Williams gang during the sum mer, it is obvious that Moore can match anyone around when it comes to a knowing, professional, big league rro- duction.
