A : A CONFIDENT NATION - Communist China celebrates its tenth birthday Thurs day, more confident, more defiant' and more dangerous than ever. Some of the men who -will be in the spotlight are, left to right, Mao Tse-Tung, 65, chairman of the Commu nist party; Chou En-Lai, 61, the nimble Pre mier, and Liu ,Shao-Chi, 54, or 61, Mao's dour first lieutenant, the new president of the government and a bit of a mystery man. (UPI Telephoto) Communist China Nears Tenth Anniversary With Confidence Toyko-(DPD-A decade ago, Mao Tse-tung, chief architect of the Chinese Communist revoltuion, declared triumph antly: "The Chinese people, one quarter of the human race, have now stood up His words were confident and defiant, despite the fact that his nation lay in ruins after 22 straight years of war and civil strife Next Thursday Communist China celebrates its 10th birthday, more confident, more defiant and more dan gerous than ever. In Peiping's enormous Tie nanmen "square of heavenly peace" hundreds of thousands of spectators will look to a raised platform set amid gaudy pennants and banners where the men who made the revolution will be standing Men in Spotlight Here are some of the men who are almost certain to be ' in the spotlight on Oct. 1: Mao Tse-tung, 65, chair man of the Communist Party, guiding spirit of the revolu tion and himself a living myth. The moonfaced son of aTIunan farmer, Mao retired as president of the govern ment last April, but he re mains unchallenged as the top man in China. Liu Shao-chi, 54, or 61, Mao's dour first lieutenant, the new president of the gov ernment and a bit of a mys tery man, whose age is not even known for certain. This tough, Moscow-trained admin istrator now stands as Mao's heir-apparent. Chou En-lai, 61, Jhe nimble premier, a suave, hgndsome man who somehow has managed to land on his feet through three decades of shifts and purges and even now may be working his way out from under a cloud. - Plotted in 1920 These are the men who swept one-fourth of mankind into the Communist camp. "Jhey are the first generation of Chinese Communism, the men who began plotting back in the 1920s in Shanghai and Paris and are still around to day, holding the reins. &. decade ago they were gaunt from years of retreat and defeat, of guerrilla war fare and the austere life of the c&res of Yenan where they fled from Shanghai in the "long march" of the 1920s. They were probably also a bit amazed at their sudden suc cess. In 1947, Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist armies had the Communists on the run. As soon as the civil war resumed at the end of World War n the Reds were routed from urban strongholds and ap peared headed for defeat. But up in Manchuria, the industrial heart of China, a slender young general named Lin Piao, not yet 40 years old, was whipping a pow erful Communist army into shape. It was armed with al most unlimited guns and am munition captured from -the Japanese .by the Russians and given to the Chinese Rads. By 1948 he had an iron grip Four Fined on Game Violations Four men were fined in Jackson county district court Thursday and Friday for game violations, state police reported. Haskell Lee Stewart, 24, of 19 Jeanette st., and Floyd Burl Lay, 35, of 6804 Agate rd., Medford, were fined $150 each and assessed court costs by pro tempore Judge James Redden Friday on charges of spotlighting deer. Police said the two were arrested about 12:30 a.m. and accused of killing a doe fawn in the An telope Creek area. Officers stated that Judge Redden assessed fines Thurs day of $100 and cost? against Robert Lamb, 42, of 1211 West 10th st., and $50 and court costs against his father, Clyde Emery Lamb, 64, of 40 Myers court, on charges of il legal possession of deer. Rob ert Lamb, " arrested Wednes day, -"as charged with killing deer on Timber mountain. They said he gave half of it to his father. on the rural regions of Man churia and was ready to reach for the cities. Once he began moving he never stopped. Lin turned the tide for the Communists. This is the same Lin now 51, who became China s new defense miru.r a week ago. He is almost cer tain to be on the reviewing stand next Thursday, for he ranks sixth in the Commu nist hierarchy and is consid ered one of the men to watch in Red China. . Lin's 4th field army broke the Nationalists' back. With all Manchuria under their control the Communists swept into Peiping and Tientsin and quickly took over the rest of the country. On Oct. 1, 1949, Mao proclaimed the founding of "the people's republic of China." Local Officials to Attend Area Meeting Elliott Becken, assistant su perintendent of Medf o:d public schools, and Mrs. Mar garet Mentzer, chairman of the Medford public library board, were to attend a re gional meeting of library of ficials Saturday in Klamath Falls. Becken was to appear on a panel to discuss administra tive attitudes towa 1 library practices in the Pacific North west, based on a survey of 425 school superintendents under the auspices of the University of Washington.- Mrs. Mentzer was to appear on a panel discussing library policies. Also to attend from this area was Miss Joyce Mar lin, reference librarian in the Medford public library, li brary administrators and trus tees" from Lake, Klamath, Jackson and Josephine coun ties were to attend the meet ing.
