(J.. Steel By- Knife; Hrannis, Mass. !UPD A knife wound suffered by Walter F. Munf ord, 59, U. S. Siaal Corp. president, was inflicted accidentally. Dis trict Aitornty Edmund Dinis said today. "I am satisfied there was no criminal action", in the case. Dinis told newsman at Cap Cod hospital where Munf ord was recovering from emergency surgery. Dinis, after questioning Mrs. Munford, house guests and others, reported that the executive suffered an abdominal puncture from a paring knife. Ho said the accident occurred while Munford was putting away utensils in the kitchen of his summer horn at nearby Chatham Wednesday. Hyannis, MasSv-flJPD-Walter F. Munford, 59, president of the U.S. Steel Corp, wounded himself with a knife, it was disclosed today by Cape Cod hospital officials where he underwent emergency sur gery. In a sketchy statement, the hospital did not say whether the wounds were accidentally inflicted. " Abdominal Surgery Munford was hospitalized Wednesday ' and underwent abdominal surgery. A police investigation was begun when Rabbit Association To Meet Friday The first Medford meeting of the Rogue Valley Babbit association will be held in the Jackson county court house Friday at 8 p.m. - The group, which will meet monthly in Medford, Rogue River and Grants Pass, was organized "to exchange in formation in an effort to im prove rabbit production and the quality of rabbits raised in this area," officers re ported. . MUNFORD Undergoes Surgery (UPJ Telepboto) details of the stabbing were cloaked in mystery. Munford's condition was described as "good" today aft er the surgery. After the executive was hospitalized Wednesday, two policemen went to the Mun ford summer home , at nearby Chatham and confiscated a six-inch fish knife. They also interviewed Mrs. Munford. The hospital said Munford had been under care of his physician for the past few weeks suffering from fatigue and nervous exhaustion. Overnight Guests His physician, Dr. Robert B. Wednesday morning, while preparing to go with them to Boston for further treatment, "he apparently wounded him self with a knife," the hospi tal said. District Attorney Edmund Dinis dispatched several in vestigators from his office to determine "whether the stab wounds were self-inflicted or otherwise." Dinis said Wednesday night he' lacked sufficient details to make a statement in the case but added -that "because of the nature of the knife wound&Sunford has suffered, we havV begun a full investi- Price for Road Claimed Too High Portland (UPD A Forest Service spokesman said today that agency and Pacific Pow er and Light Company have not been able to come to terms on federal purchase of a company road that provides access to seven billion board feet of timber in Washington state's Upper Lewis river area. , Arthur W. Greeley, Forest Service assistant chief of lands, said price for the road has snagged negotiations. PP&L constructed the road at a cost of some $4 million. A company spokesman, E. Roberts de Luccia, chief engi neer, said PP&L wants to re solve the road problem "in a manner that protects both the interests of the timber pur chasers and the interests of the electric consumers." De Luccia said that mean while the 15-mile road has been available for public use and that loggers have used it on a steady basis in operating on both private and. federal timber in the area. Thursday, Sept. 24, 1959 Governors Plan ity Talks at Idaho Meeting Sun Valley, Idaho - (UPD -Eleven governors began con verging on this vacationland today for a four-day meeting to unite western states on their common problems. The meeting was expected to pave the way for a west ern political bloc to back a Democratic presidential can didate favorable to the West. California Democratic chair man William A. Munnell dis closed that a team of Cali fornia Democrats went through all 11 states earlier this month and found a "very, very friendly attitude every where" toward a Western coalition. Munnell said the team sent by the Democratic State Cen tral Committee included Leonard J. Dieden, an Oak land attorney, and John Pur chio, Hayward city council man. He said they talked to Democratic governors in some states 'and state chairman and national committeemen i n states that have Republican governors. Natural resource conserva tion and reclamation as well as highways, public welfare and other problems resulting from p pulatioh growth were high on the agenda. These were the issues on which the Democratic voting bloc would choose a sympa thetic candidate. None have been mentioned so far. The 11 western states will have about 250 votes at the Democratic National Conven tion in Los Angeles next summer. California will have 81 of these. Churchill, wearing his us ual black overcoat, black hom- Fire Damages Eugene Building Eugene -4UPD- A tavern and apartments above it in the heart of downtown Eugene were damaged by a two alarm fire early today which took only 20 minute, to con trol. No injuries were report ed. , The fire was reported at 1:06 a.m. and was controlled at 1:26 a.m. Firemen said the damage did not appear to be exten sive. The fire was believed to have broken out in the card room of the Cosmos tavern and then spread upstairs. The tavern was closed at the time. Apartment tenants were safely evacuated. Other buildings in the block include a large furni ture store, other apartments and- some smaller stores. They were not damaged. Youth Honor Day Contest Slated The theme for the annual Youth Honor day essay con test sponsored by the Med ford lodge of the Loyal Order of Moose has been announced. Senior high school students in the -county who enter the contest are to write on the topic, "Is juvenile delinquency a serious problem in Jackson county?" Rules and entry forms are available from the contest chairman, Don Darneille, at McLoughlin Junior High school. The essays are to be from 300-500 words in length and submitted to Darneille on or before 4 p.m. Oct. 22. Entries will be judged on content, form and style, he said. A first place winner will be selected both from boy and girl entrants and. a number of awards will be made. In addi tion, the winning couple will reign as queen and king of the Youth Honor day ball Oct. 31. "Live" music, including performances by The Shadows singing group, is planned for the dance. Cigar; Gives Steel Worker Expensive Watch Pittsburgh -UPD-Soviet Pre mier Nikita Khrushchev was handed a cigar by a steel mill workman today. He accepted it, then took off his expensive wristwatch and handed it to the cigar donor. The American was Kenneth Jackey, 45, an attendant in the tool storeroom at the Mes ta Machine Co. Jackey said it was a "spur of the moment thing." "Last night I bought a box of El Verso cigars and figured as long as he was coming to our plant I was going to try to give him a cigar, I never figured the security people would let me get that close to him. "When he was passing the storeroom I walked up to him and handed him the cigar. It was just like that. First, he gave me a medal showing a rocket hitting the moon. "He walked away, but stop ped and took off his wrist watch and gave it to me. One of the interpreters said 'He wants you to have this and he says God bless you.' It's hard for me to be lieve it." 1,100 Fish Pass Dam on Deschutes Portland (DPD George Eicher, aquatic biologist for the Portland General Electric Company's Pelton Dam, said Wednesday that 1,100 ana dromous fish have passed the dam on the Deschutes river this season for spawning grounds. He said this was one of th; largest counts of upstream migrants ever recorded on that part of the river. Some of the fish passed the dam by way of the three-mile long fish ladders, he said, while others were trapped t trapping facilities and hauled around the dam.
