V ft: SEPT. 22 m 4- 9-14-16 Good ) Adverse K22-32-43 The Aledical Hodgkins' Disease In a recent article in the Canadian Medical Journal, Drs. Warwick and Sellers re- ported that when 960 per sons with Hodgkins' dis ease were treated with either x - rays, drugs, or sur- geryfjthe five y e a r survival rate for all cases was 29.7 as I said in a Dr Alvam per cent, cut, recent column, the earlier the treatment is started, the better the results. I have had patients who, when seen and well treat ed as soon as the disease start ed, went for seven, or eight years before symptom's re turned. But . when patients came to me five or six years after they had first fallen ill, I could not help them much. Nothing then had much effect on the fever, itching, prostra tion, and loss of weight.' The . wonderful good news that Drs. Warwick and Sellers now give us is that eight- of their patients have survived for 10 years, six for 20 years, and four, for 25 years or more! To many, this may not look like much of an advance; but to me it means much because it shows that the disease is not " absolutely hopeless, . as we use.d to think it. was. I re member a man who,, after be ing" well treated with x-rays was perfectly well for eight years. Then he returned, com plaining only of great itching. I couldn't find arsingle en larged lymph node on him, so had an x-ray man give him a treatment over his abdomen, and with this, he promptly felt well again. Nose Bleeds An occasional nose - bleed usually does not mean any thing. I must have had hun dreds during my life-time, and I have always been very healthy. Only very rarely is a nose-bleed so bad that a specialist must pack the nose thoroughly in order to stop it. Many a time, I have stopped a bad nose-bleed for someone simply by having him bend over forward, pinch his nose with his fingers, take out his watch and hold the nose for at least six or seven minutes. This gives a chance for the blood to clot. If a child br adult has fre quent nose-bleeds-and rather severe ones-a physician should look to see if there is any dis coverable cause. There may be a little "ulcer where the nose is often picked, or, in a rare case, there will be a number of tiny tufts of blood vessels, which . easily rupture (assy?
