The loss meant that the White Sox cannot cinch the pennant until Sunday when they play the Tigers again. - The second -place Cleveland Indians, who trail by five games, were at Kansas City for a night game. , The second-place Cleveland Indians stayed alive in the American league pennant race when they crushed the Kan sas City Athletics, 13-7, Sat urday night to move within 4V4 games of the first-place Chicago White Sox. ' Had the Indians lost last . night, the White Sox automati cally would have been assur . ed at least a tie for the pen nant. As it is, the "magic number" remained at two. Any number of Chicago vic a tories or Cleveland losses to taling two will give the White Sox their first pennant in 40 years. Southpaw Jack Harshman ' won the game for the Indians, scattering nine hits for his ' seventh victory of the year, in - addition to contributing a dou ble and two-single's in Cleve- ' land's 19-hit attack. Minnie Minoso hit his 20th homer for the Indians. Johnny Kucks - was the loser. Earlier .the Detroit Tigers beat the White Sox, 5-4. - Paul Foytack, with a ninth inning assist' from Ray Nar leski, got the1 victory over the V White Sox. Manager Walt Alston had planned to go with Craig Sat urday night but decided to switch him with Don Drysdale when statistics disclosed that the latter pitches better at night than in the sunshine. . The first part of Alston's hunch paid- off. Craig, who has a lifetime record of six wins and one defeat against the Giants, scattered six hits in posting his ninth win of the season. . Johnny Antonelli, who was taking a third shot at becom ing a ' 20-game winner this year, got the ' hook in the fourth inning while Los Ange les was drawing out to "a 3-0 lead. . '.' ' It . appeared Coach Paul Dietzel's Tigers, unbeaten and untied in 1958, would head the list of beaten favo rites when they trailed the Owls at the half, 3-0. : But the Tigers came out after the intermission and went in front to stay when Billy Cannon, their All-America halfback, raced 17 yards for a. third quarter touch down.
