Stale Civil Rights Leadership Lauded Salem-ITD-Oregon's leader ship in civil rights legislation and the work of the State La bor Bureau's civil rights divi sion received national recog nition at the 11th annual con ference of state commissions against discrimination held in New Jersey. A report submitted to La bor Commissioner Norman Nilsen and Attorney General Robert Y. Thornton said Ore gon laws "in the field of fair housing are far superior to laws of most states represent ed at the conference." This time, Khrushchev, will see RAMAC in the United States, and tie can prove to himself that RAMAC gave the right answers. He will see RAMAC while touring the In ternational Business Machines Corporation's computer plant at San Jose, Calif., Science Service has learned. In Various Stages After lunching in the plant's cafeteria on Sept.,.21, Khrush chev will see the computer in various stages of its marmfac ture. ; The purpose of the tour is to let him see ah American in dustrial plant in action. It is the only industrial stop-off so far announced for Khrush chev. -- The computer plant is one of America's newest and most modern. Sprawling over a 210 acre rural setting, it quarters over "2,000 employees, on its college-like campus. Its group ed buildings include : a re search center, an education building, a product develop ment laboratory, a main manu facturing building and an ad ministration building. , Chief Product The RAMAC -305 is the plant's, chief product. The machine is built around a disk memory unit capable of stor ing 5,000,000 bits of informa tion. The 'machine,' although used to answer questions' in Moscow, more commonly is used in the U.S. for billing, Airplane Parts ; -Theft Charged , McMinnyille - (DPD - Ron ald B. Wooden, 9, Portland, has been arrested and charg ed with theft of airplane parts, Sheriff W. L. Mekkers said. . Money Delays Establishment of New Colleges Salem - (DPD - Dr.,Willard Bear, assistant state superin tendent of public instruction, told an annual Joint meeting of the Board of Education that money problems stand in the way of establishing, com munitycolleges Jn Oregon. . A community college, act was passed by the-1959 Leg islature under,, which local districts have to provide one third of the funds plus build ings for the proposed colleges. Many Oregon communities including Astoria, Oregon City, Ontario, Pendleton, Coos Bay and Medord have expressed interest in starting two-year, post high school ed ucation centers. Richard said that if any positions were eleminated by the board, new jobs would be found for teachers with tenure. - An engineering study is now under way to determine if OTI should be moved, Richards said. . Houck,-director of .the Children's Hospital bio chemical research laboratory, Washington, D.C Carrageenin, a sulfated poly saccharide, that composes 60 per " cent to 70 per cent , of dried seaweed, apparently in terferes with the development of ulcers , by blocking the ac tion of pepsin, t Dr. ' Houch found in animal experiments. Insecticides, herbicides and other agricultural chemicals share blame with domestic, in dustrial and natural wastes for contaminating the nation's water resources, F. M. Upholsterers To Gel Pay Boost Portland (DPI A two-year agreement under which about 450 journeymen upholsterers and mattress, workers in 'the Pacific Northwest will get a pay hike was announced here Thursday. The agreement also calls for three weeks vacation for 10-year employees. Settlement was announced by the Portland upholstery k furniture manufacturers and Alfred Beecher, secretary of the Northwest Federation of Upholsterers and Bedding Workers. The Federation rep resents Portland local 65, Ta coma local 40 and Seattle lo cal 6. ; The agreement, retroactive to Sept: 1, calls for a wage hike of 10 cents an hour this year ana increases ox 1V2 cents on may l, 1960, and 7V4 cents on Sept 1, 1960. - Top scale for upholsterers was upped to $2.45 an hour and for mattress workers to $2.16 an hour this year. . About 210 of the workers are in Portland. The gunman had shot and wounded two passersby in front of the Tribunal of Commerce before police shot Grange Hews Eagle Point Grange The Eagle Point Grange met Tuesday, Sept. 15, at which time Dewey Babcock was elected to the executive committee- to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation of Robert Meyer. Agriculture committee Chairman C. C. Hoover re ported that the Livestock market has advanced again, aw" Clifford H. Moore, dairy committee chairman, stated that while there appears to be' no change in the milk sit uation, hay in eastern Ore gon is in plentiful supply. Announcement was made of the National Grange con vention to be held in Long Beach, Calif., Nov. 3-18. A tour is planned in connection with the convention, includ ing a trip to Reno, Las Vegas, Boulder Dam, Grand Can yon, Palm Springs, Yosemite, Hollywood, and others.
