Charlie Coe Tabes Match In National Amateur Golf Colorado Springs -flJPD-Dick Yost of Portland, Ore., ad vanced to the third round of the National Amateur golf tourney Tuesday by defeating Raymond E. Witzel of San ford, Fla., 9 and 7. ' By NORMAN MILLER Colorado Springs, Colo. -(UPD -Charlie Coe, Bill Hyndman and some of the older golfing gaffers have been doing right well in the National -Amateur golf championship thus far, but the real test for creaking bones begins today. . The grind steps up to two rounds a day on the mile-high, 7,010 -yard Broadmoor Club course. And from here in it will take stamina as well as savvy to beat the rarified at mosphere, the long fairways and the young hot-shots in the tournament. Coe, the 35-year-old U.S Walker Cup captain, and Green Bay Among Teams To Beat in Pro Football By FRED LINDECKE Green Bay, Wis. -4UPD- The Green Bay Packers don't have a star passer or a big break away runner. But they figure to be one of the teams to beat this year because of a man who won't touch a ball during a game new coach and gen eral manager Vince Lombard!. Lombardi - at 45 and never before a head coach other than in high school picked a tough assignment. The Pack ers had the worst record in the National Football league last year and the poorest in Jheir own 40-year history - a 1-10-1 mark. Lombardi took the job be cause he was given a five-year contract and made complete boss on the field and in the front office. . Even before he got the team winning on the exhibition trail, Packer pre-season ticket sales reflected the fans' con fidence in Lombardi by reach ing record highs. Lombardi came to the Packers this year after five years as an offensive coach under Jim Lee Howell of the New York Giants. He came with the knowledge that he faced a long rebuilding job. His first problem was to change the defeatist attitude of the club. New uniforms and a street clothes outfit of tie and jacket for all players were two things Lombardi picked to help wipe away the "I don't care attitude." . I But more important was Lombardi' s insistence that every man was going to give everything he had, or get out, Twelve men who were on last year's . team are 'not around this year. Lombardi has made nine deals for replacements and more trades are expected. "The men I traded for are football players, not just players. : There's a big dif ference, you know," Lom bardi said. The biggest trade made by Lombardi sent end Billy How- ton to the Cleveland Browns for halfback Dew Carpenter and defensive lineman Bill Quinlan. He also bought II- year veteran Emlin Tunnell from the Giants as a defen sive . safety. Marv Matuszak went to Baltimore for guard Fred Thurston, while defen sive back Bobby Freeman came from Cleveland and de fensive lineman Tom Saidock moved in from Philadelphia. "Last year the Packers couldn't run the ball and were an almost exclusively passing club. It's not going to be that way this year," said Lombardi. And who sprang the biggest upset? Dee Replogle, an un heralded Oklahoma oilman, aged 40. Replogle eliminated Deane Beman, the 21-year-old Walker Cupper and British Amateur champon who had been rated a threat to Coe's crown, 4 and 3. Plays Penrose Replogle's third round op ponent is Jack Penrose of Miami Beach, Fla. The slender 150-pound Coe, who says, "Don't worry about me, if I keep winning, I'll make it around if I have to crawl," played Bob Ratdorff of Hershey, Pa., 28-year-old Pennsylvania state amateur champion in today's third round. Coe shot two-under-par golf , Tuesday in trqpncing John Mallory of Spokane, Wash., 6 and 5. Hyndman, who said he also was at the peak of his game in beating Bob Loufek ' of Rock Island, 111., 5 and 4, faced 40-year-old John Kline of the Westover (Mass.) Air Force Base today. Three other members of the Walker Cup "old guard" - Harvie Ward, 33; Dr. Frank (Bud) Taylor, 42, and Billy Joe Patton, 37, also reached the third round, along with two Walker Cup youngsters, 22-year-old Tommy Aaron and ltf-year-oid Jac&ie Nicklaus. Y Volleyball For Men Slated Thursday Night Men's Volleyball League play has been changed from Monday ' to Thursday nieht this year at the Young Men's Christian association. Men will start tomorrow at 7 p.m. All men interested in slav ing volleyball are encouraged to be at the YMCA on Thurs day. This is for non-members as well as for members. Onlv equipment needed will be gym shoes. It is not necessary for men to be experienced tlay- ers. Beginners will be wel comed. As play continues teams will play out-of-town YMCAs ana win enter some of the Northwest tournaments. Shooting Area Open to Hunters At Indian Lake Opeinng'of the Indian lake shooting preserve to hunters as of yesterday has been an nounced by owner Bill Walch. The preserve is a mile up Crowfoot rd. from the Butte Falls highway. Crowfoot junc tion with the Butte Falls route is nine miles up from Crater lake highway. Hunting is possible for a fee. The Green Bay Packers placed Parilli, their top draft choice in 1952, on the waiver list along with veteran tackle Tom Saidock and rookie half back Alex Hawkins of South Carolina. Boydston, the. Chi cago Cardinals' No. 1 draft choice in 1954, was placed on the club's waiver list. The Los Angeles Rams asked waivers on three play ers and placed defensive back Floyd Iglehart on the injured reserve list. Those released on waivers were guard Bob Reif snyder of Navy, Jim Jones, a defensive back from Washing ton and Fresno State halfback Darryl Rogers. Linebacker Joe Robb of Texas Christian and Rommie Laudd of UCLA were re leased by the Chicago Bears. The Cougars marched 75 yards after the opening kick- off for their first score and took advantage of an Eagle muffed punt attempt in the second period for their other touchdown. . Cliff Chapman went 13 yards around end for the opening TD and Floyd Scaife boomed eight yards for the other score. Athletics End Pact Portland -(UPD- The Kansas City Athletics of the Ameri can league Tuesday ended ; their working agreement with ! the Portland Beavers of the ! Pacific Coast league. Arch Kingsley, president of the Portland team, said he be lieved the cancellation was a result of a lawsuit recently filed by Portland against the major leagues for "player con trol" and territorial invasion "It can't be any other rea son," Kingsley said. Portland finished in sixth place in the Pacific Coast league this season. It has had previous working agreements with the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs.
