Black Tornaclo Passing Will Get Attention in Drill for Pirate Tangle "We'll work quite a bit this week on our passing offense. - It should have been pretty good and wasn't," coach Fred Spiegelberg said yesterday in " reviewing Medford high's 33 to 0 football victory Friday " over Beaverton. The running game was good .jbut the passing game was I erratic, Spiegelberg pointed out. He described Medford ' blocking and tackling as "sharp" in the triumph on the " Beaver field. Rain Ruins Cause for Vancouver By DON BECKER United Press International If the Vancouver Mounties start screaming "we wuz robbed" you can hardly blame them. But for three rained out games the Mounties might have tied the Salt Lake City Bees for the ' Pacific Coast league pennant. PCL action ended Sunday . with the Mounties clipping Seattle 7-0 in an oddly speed ed up affair while Salt Lake City was whipped by Sacra mento, 5-3. That put the Bees just one and a half games in front of the second place . Mounties. And the Bees' slim lead was picked up in the win column. Both clubs lost 69 games over the campaign, but the Bees - won 85 to 82 for Vancouver. Vancouver General Mana- . ger Cedric Tallis did every thing he could to get League President Leslie O'Connor to reschedule the three rained , out games. When O'Connor : said it couldn't be done, Tal- lis appealed to the club own ers, asked for a' vote. They backed up" O'Connor. So the ;. Don DomenichelU and Al Norris each batted in three runs to lead the Indians to their win. Norris belted a three run hom er in the seventh to erase a 3-1 Beaver lead. Domenichelli ripped a three run triple in the eighth. The San Diego Padres clinched, third place with a 5-4 win over Phoenix in the only night game:. Memphis, Term. -(UPC- Mari lynn Smith of Wichita, Karu, dropped a 25-foot putt on the 16th hole Sunday to break a tight three-way battle and win the' $7,500 Memphis Women's Open golf tournament. The blonde Kansas golfer finished with a three-under-par 70 and a 72-hole total of 295. Mickey Wright of San Diego and Bon nie Randolph of - Columbus, Ohio, tied for second place with 297, , , . Spiegelberg reported that he and his staff were par ticularly pleased with the play in the defensive line of "new boys," Reggie Breeze, middle guard, and John James, tack le. Work of Terry Earl and Skip Bennett backing up the line drew plaudits. The coach reported that Dennis Jensen did a fine job at defensive end and that Lynn Knight worked "okeh" at his tackle slot. Knight also did some fine punting for the Black Tornado. Play of end Lowell Dean and linebacker Jerry Ander son on defense was highlight ed when Dean blocked a punt and Anderson ' recovered the ball for a touchdown. . To Stick With Platoons The Tornado completed just two of 11 passes but one, by Calvin Dean to twin brother Lowell, was good for 43 yards and a touchdown. Spiegelberg said, he alter nated his "go" and "shock" offensive platoons until the later stages of the game when players mixed in the action. A total of 41 Tornadoes got into the fracas. The tutor said he planned to stick with his unit offense plan for the Marshfield game at Coos Bay next Saturday night. He stated that he'd like to have a com plete defensive club of grid ders who do not play offense With the exception of Calvin Dean, the defensive platoon draws players from each of the offensive units. The Medford coach said he thought the Tornado .came through the Beaver scrap without injury. Al Funston, fullback and linebacker, who suffered an injured knee in practice,- got into the tussje but tne Knee cud not noid up, Spiegelberg reported. Medford will have its labors cut out for it on Saturday. Van Guides Eagles in Colt Upset By JOE SARGIS United Press International Coach Buck Shaw of the Philadelphia Eagles is realis tic enough not to be expecting miracles, in the 1959 National Football league campaign, but if he's strutting a little today, you can't exactly blame him. With Norm Van Brocklin pitchin' and little Tommy Mc Donald catchin' the Eagles soared to a surprising 35-14 victory over ' the champion Baltimore Colts Sunday in the biggest form reversal thus far in NFL exhibition play. ' Van Brocklin, who can car ry a team a long way if he gets a little help, did exactly that against the Colts. The 33-year-old Dutchman, who completed 198 of 374 passes, high for the league in both respects last year, made good on 15 of 28 attempts Sunday.
