Coast and Geodetic Survey Shows Lake Not as Deep as Previously Measured The coast and geodetic sur vey made of Crater Lake this summer found that the lake is not as deep as previously re corded in wire and lead soundings. ' Electronic soundings show ed the lake was about 60 feet shallower than previous Youths Transported To Institutions Three Medford youths last week began sentences oiZVz years each following circuit court action on charges of contributing to the delin queney of a minor. ' Jackson county sheriffs - deputies reported transport ing Basil Victor DeRushe, 20, of 332 Mary st., to the Oregon state penitentiary, and the - other two, Waymon Ross Blackwood, 20, of 2520 Merri- man rd. and Chester Leon Al- : lison, 19, of 1119 West Fourth st., to the Oregon correctional .institution. The trio were involved with other youths in a, case of con tributing to the delinquency of a 16-year-old girl. All three . pleaded guilty to the charge. :- They were sentenced Aug. 31 .by Circuit Judge Edward C. Kelly. ' measurements. Crater lake is the second deepest lake on the North American continent. The deepest point was listed as 1,996 feet, but new soundings found it was 1,932 feet, the survey showed. However, this does not alter the lake's posi tion of being the second deep est in North America. Portion of Story ;t Following is portion of a story by Joe Rigert of the Oregon Journal staff which appeared in today's Oregon Journal: "J ' "Lt. R. E. Williams, who headed the' survey- for the agefncy, pointed out that the depths he recorded are still subject, to office revision and review. ', ' - '' "Previous soundings were made by wire .and lead in 1886, 1938, 1939 and 1940, but never before; by electronic equipment. i "This may account for the difference in recordings, Wil liams said. It would take only a slight wire angle to give an error of 60 feet. , "The boats used : for the other soundings," he explain ed, could have drifted after the lead hit bottom, so that the wire, wss not straight up and down. "Williams used a fathomet er, which can measure down sBlCOLUMBIAl "NUMes ore M THE wonderful world of SOUND Inn ii Wm from ' : 1 e-twVJ 1 COLUMBIA STEREOPHONIC CONSpLE With Remote stereo speaker and built-in AM-FM radio v H "STOWAWAr STEREO SPEAKEt cm ba place op f to 12' from mm unit for trut sta- ' ree saparation. . The instru ment bounces an electrical impulse off the bottom and measures the :time it takes the impulse to return to the machine. Lake Profile "With this information, the instrument draws a profile of the lake bottom on graph paper, giving the depth ac curately as it goes. : "Williams saM most of the depths throughout the lake ran about 60 feet less than those previously recorded. : Although there was a dis crepancy in depths, Williams said the topography' of the lake ' bottom as recorded by the electronic gear was al most identical to that found by the first soundings even taken m 1886 - by wire and lead, a relatively crude method. The latest survey noted a cone at a 1,300 feet depth'and other small cones, the same as were charted earlier, Wil liams said. "The current data will be used to make both contour and relief maps of the lake bottom, reported Tom Wil liams, superint endent of Crater Lakes National park, "and is expected to add ma terially to the fascinating story of Crater lake's forma tion." "Deepest lake on the North American continent is Great Slave lake in Canada at 2,015 feet, Williams said. Lake Bai kal in Siberia at 5,712 feet is the - world's deepest. Crater lake ranks seventh in the world. Meetings Set for Pupils Interested In School Bands LOOK WHAT HAPPENED!
