They are guards. On the 40 man roster are Dan Dulley, Steve Eastburn, Leon Plue ard and Leon Carr, linemen over 195 pounds. Simpson has reported that he may have 228-pound . Carr at quarter back on offense and in the line on, defense. -The mentor - is using the Iowa system, similar to the offense of the University of Oregon team. - Cottage Grove is playing a full District 5 A-l slate for the first time this fall. Simp son has commented that this will not be a championship year but has added, "You never can tell." Salmon Packers Object To Bids Astoria-flJPD-The Lower Co lumbia River Salmon Packers Association Thursday objected to the manner in which the Oregon Fish Commission calls for bids. . The group also complained about the awarding of a con tract in executive session for the purchase of salmon vis cera to be used in the com mission's hatcheries as food for fish during the coming winter. James Cellars, packers spokesman, said bidding pro cedures plus specifications of the commission "practically eliminated local packers from bidding on the contract." Young Idaho Bear Hunter Found Dead Wallace, Idaho (UPD The death of a 14-year-old Kellogg, Idaho, bear hunter, whose body was found in mountain ous country near here Thurs day, has been attributed to ex posure and exhaustion. , Deputy Coroner Albert Pe terson said the boy, Fred Nai man, probably died late Mon day, or early Tuesday morn ing. No autopsy was planned, Peterson said. The boy became the object of a full-scale search when he failed, to meet his father Mon day after the two had sepa rated while hunting. Stop in! Southern California West Club To Beat By HAL WOOD San Francisoo-(DPD-The Uni versity of Southern California Trojans are the "team to beat" for the West Coast foot ball championship this year. But how will the eventual winner be determined? For the first time in a half century, there will be no Pa cific Coast conference to bind the teams together. Of the dozen "major" colleges in the West, only five belong to a conference. These are: USC, Stanford, UCLA, Washington and Cali fornia. That leaves, such schools as Oregon, Oregon State, Wash ington State, Idaho, College of Pacific, and San Jose State playing as "independents." ' With the new. schedules, there may be no way to find out which is the best club in the West. For instance! UCLA plays only four of the "old" Pacific Coast conference members; USC plays only five. Oregon doesn't play either one of the Los Angeles schools.. So competition will be based on more of a national basis than ever before.. Southern California plays Pittsburgh, Ohio i State, West Virginia, Baylor and Notre Dame all from east of the Rocxies. Predominately Air Schedules UCLA tangles with Purdue, Pittsburgh, the Air Force Academy, North Carolina State, , Utah and Syracuse. California meets Iowa, Texas and Notre Dame. MERCURY DEALER'S, 7 i " V j St. Mary's Scraps IV Roger Hout and Ron Daley, a pair of backfield men, have been shifted to ends on, the St. Mary's football eleven to strengthen the Crusaders for their tussle this evening with the Illinois Valley high Cou gars, - -;. -' The two clubs collide at 8 pm. on . the Medford high turf. .Contention is strictly, non-leaeue. St. Mary's takes part in District 5B competi tion and the Cave Junction club is a member of the A-2 Rogue circuit. Coach Bill McKibbin said that for offense Jimmy Val entine and Mike Duggan or Mike Moore will be at tackles for the Medford eleven with George Lucas and Don Mac Pherson at guards and Tom Tomjack at center. In .the backfield will be Bob Evans at quarter, Fred Lucas and Dick Evans at halfbacks and Terry Cooper at fullback. . Calhoun at Safety .Duggan,' who suffered a slight back fracture at an early practice yesterday awaited a doctor's okeh. Moore will be the rtarter on defense. While Jim Calhoun is to be in the line-up in place of Bob Evans and play safety and Rausch will be in Valen tine's spot when IV lias Ahe ball. " Dick Evans is recuperat ing from back trouble. Also on the crippled 'list are Marv McGee, fullback, and Dan Jacobson, junior end. Jacob son, a junior six-footer with' good hands, has no previous experience and probably schedule the Trojans should emerge as the "champion of the West." Coach Don Clark, who was stuck with nearly a full team of sophomores last year, has the experience to move his team ahead this time. He will have a solid line; a fine quar terback in Willie Wood; and some good ball carriers, head ed by halfbacks Jerry Trayn ham and Lynn Gaskill and fullback Jerry Persinger. And the Trojans have good reserves. - The "last" champion of the Pacific Coast conference was California and head coach Pete Elliott expects to come up with another good club this yead. Last year's team was the best the West had to offer of a mediocre lot. "We'll expand on the'mul-tiple-T formation used last year," says Elliotts "And I think we'll use the double platoon, as much as possible." Bears Anchored By Veterans The Bears have 23 letter men returning, including at least two for every position. .Featured in the backfield will be fullback Billy, Patton and halfback Grover Garvin. The quarterback probably will be Wayne Crowe. Pat Newell, the little 185-pound tackle who was All-Coast last year, will anchor the line again this fall. Coach Jack Curtice at Stan ford, coming off a season so bad he couldn't believe it, has a rebuilding job. But Curtice is. optimistic after fine spring and fall practice sessions. Oregon, under coach Len Casanova, will have- another defensive powerhouse. But getting points will be another problem. Other plots include: San 'Jose State Hopes to make it "big" this year with' a veteran team that may in clude world champion sprin ter Ray Norton. ' Oregon Stale Veterans re turn, to be led by sophomore quarterback Don Kasso. Washington Good running team again, possibly slow but rugged. s Washington Stale Won six out of last seven games in 1958, could be even stronger this year.
