Three Units Listed Fr Black Tornado Game at Beaverton Shades of Louisiana State! Coach Fred Spiegelberg has indicated,, that his Medford High school football crew, taking a cue from the 1958 national collegiate champion Tigers, will operate in three units when it goes againsfthe Beaverton Beavers in the met ropolitan area community on Friday night Spiegelberg last night nam ed two offensive units, a "Go Team" and a "Shock Team" and a defensive combination. It's not three completely sep arate units like the LSU Ti gers fielded. The two attack ing Black Tornado contin gents have different, person nel but the defending combi nation is mostly a selection of players from the 'Goes and Shocks. . Across the unbalanced line on the Go Team are Jerry' An derson , (187), left end; Keith Berg (170), left guard; Chuck Holt (180), center; Gordon Pathman (208),- left tackle; John Frohnmayer (175), right guard; Dennis Jensen (190), right tackle, and Lowell Dean (200), right end. Backs are Ray Konopasek (150), quarter back; Ken Durkee (156), left halfback; Dan Sieg (170), full back, and Leonard Griggs (160), right half. Shock Team ' ! On the line the Shocks have Bob Quinney (170), left end; Reggie Breeze (178), left guard; Pat McLaughlin (195), center; Lynn Knight (200), left tackle; Terry Earl (155), right guard; John James (175) right tackle, and Booth Deakins (178), right end. In the back field are Dick Ragsdale (160), quarter; Skip Bennett (168), left half; Bill Charley (164), full, and Mike Hood (166), right half. For defense across the line are Lowell Dean, James, Breeze, Knight and Jensen, with Anderson, Earl and Charley, linebackers; Rags dale and Calvin Dean i(152ji, halfbacks, and Durkee, safety Of the foregoing crew James, up from the junior var sity, is the only non-letter- man. Cal Dean could see some quarterbacking duty. A cou ple of players who could be on one or two of the units are Al Funston, fullback and line backer, sidelined by a knee ailment, and Jim Johnston, tackle, hampered by an old non-football injury and advis ed by his doctor to lay off a couple of weeks. Both are let term en. Multiple Offenses Spiegelberg did not say last night which of the two offen sive , elevens will take the field first. He may not an nounce his decision until just before game time. A squad of 44 players will suit up for the game and the gridders will leave here at 8:30 pjn. Friday. The game will be a battle of multiple offenses. Both the Tornado and Beavers mix.T and single wing formations. It's no small school Medford is going up against. Beaver ton, a four-year school, lists 1,500 students. Possible Beaverton starters are Guy Hale and Doug Whit ney, ends; Ron Hopkins and Lewis Tuttle, tackles; Ken Conklin and John'; Town, guards; Tony McCoy, center; Brian Sinnerud, quarter; Tod Kennedy, fullback, and Chris Bishop and Roger Ross, half backs. . Talent HS Short on Footballers Talent - Hustle and spirit are going to have to count a lot for the Talent high foot ball team which plays Friday night at Eagle Point. Right now, anyway, the Bulldogs are way short on numbers. New mentor Don Moore has reported just 13 boys on hand for workouts. The number Is expected to swell somewhat by next week. School is underway but stu dents who work are being ex cused from classes this week. Nine of the boys who have reported are lettermen. Sen iors are Don Skundrick, Mike Jacobs and Eddie S e a v e r, backs; Ernest McCasland and Larry Bradford, tackles, and Morris St err ett, end and tackle. Sophomores who let tered last year are Rick Sey mour and Mike Olson, guards, and Fred Tycksen, backs. Others on hand have been Tom Burnett, a senior, end, and three freshmen, John Kern, a center and Larry Johnson and James Bench, linemen. ' Moore said that the players have been hustling and show ing zest for the game. ' Steelers Get Pete Brewster United Press International 1 A budding Bobby Layne Pete Brewster passing combi nation has suddenly made the Pittsburgh Steelers look like a top contender in the Nation al Football league. Brewster, who had an nounced his retirement at the end of the 1958 season, was acquired from the Cleveland Browns, Wednesday in ex change for an undisclosed draft choice. ' . The former Purdue ace had been a standout end for the Browns during his seven-year tenure with Cleveland, lead ing the club in pass receiving in his last four seasons. MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford. Or. Shasta Phoenix-A Phoenix High school football contingent, be lieved to be the best blocking crew the Pirates have had in Sears, will play at Mt. Shasta, Calif ., at 8 pjn (daylight sav ing time) on Friday. Coach Jack Woodward said that a squad of 20 players will make the trip. He reported that there will be little dead weight since 16 or 17 lads are expected to see considerable service. In the matter of the block ing ability of the club, Wood ward noted the most improve ment in the line. Pirate backs are all experi enced with the exception of Gary Colfax, a tough, chunky sophomore. Dan Lumley and Mike Consbruck are speed sters who can go all the way anytime they are given half a chance. Leon Small will call signals from left halfback and is especially adept at running inside. Mike Reese will alter- ate at left half, particularly seeing action when passing is stressed. The coach said that Reese is the best passer Pho- nix has ever had and that his running has improved considerably. Used to Leading Jack Hoffbuhr, Ron Baker and Joe Colfax are fast, tough blockers whw all are 'used to leading plays. They are especs ially good downfield blockers and Jim Martin is a good, solid dependable lineman. Les Baker, who lettered at tackle as a freshman, is playing cen ter for the first time. Ends Othar Richey and Raymond Thompson both played quite a bit last, year. Richey is a fine line ; blocker and ' he and Thompson are good pass, re ceivers. " " . Sam Walls, a 170-pound transfer from southern Cali fornia, will see action at half back on offense and will start as a linebacker on defense. Harry Gay likely will see serv ice at halfback on offense and at tackle on defense. Dave: Johnson, 175, and Rickey, 130, are outstanding freshmen, who may get duty at guard and tackle, respectively. Julian Velasques, 155 senior guard, another transfer from a southern California school, may be called for defensive service although he has had little practice. ' - Ranee Eagleton, Jerry Mont gomery, Kaipn oysin ana Vern Harris will round out the- squad for the trip. Ron Baker will be the punter and Walls the kick-off and place kick man. Jack Hoffbuhr will call defensive signals. Mt. Shasta defeated Phoe nix 14 to 13 here last year. Possible Phoenix starters on offense are Othar Richey and Thompson, ends; Ron Baker and Martin, tackles; Joe Col fax and Hoffbuhr, guards; Lee Baker, center; Gary Colfax, quarterback; Small and Lum ley, halfbacks, and Consbruck, fullback. St. Mary's Will Tussle9 IV Cougars Cave v Junction - A good crop of sophomores is helping . to make up for a shortage of " lettermen on the Illinois Val ley High school football squad, according to coach El- don Durham. Four Cougar lettermen plus a couple of youths with pre vious experience at other schools are on the roster of IV which will be guest of the St Mary's high grid machine on Friday evening at the Med ford stadium. Like St. Mary's, Illinois Valley has had a squad short on numbers. About 20 boys were out for practices the first couple weeks of drill. The aggregation has awalled to about 25 candidates now. "The lettermen on hand are Bob Tucker, fullback; Doug Lewis, halfback; Mike Han by, quarterback, and Jerry Buckhaults, end. All are sen iors. One other letterman, Carl Hammer, sophomore halfback, and Chuck Baird, who had experience at quar terback as a sophomore, are expected to play when they've recovered from injuries. Baird broke an ankle playing softball, and Hammer cut off a toe. Transfers who lettered at their former schools are Dale Campbell, tackle,- from Jef ferson (city), and Loren Mere dith, halfback,' from Long Beach, Calif. Campbell was a center at Jefferson. . Among the sophomores are Pat Hill, end; Don Johnson, tackle; Bob .White, center; Bob Prather, guard; Steve Hanby, quarterback, and Rog er Cross, fullback. At ends, also, are Terry Johnson, junior with Jayvee experience, and Mike Rob bins, transfer from Santa q Rosa, Calif., but inexperienc ed. Mike Johnson, a senior. is a tackle with junior varsity background. Lee Rosenberg, guard, is a senior who played jayvee ball. In the backfigd are R. J. Cross, a junior ana former JV and Jack Scott, a freshman. Roger Cross is -said to be the fastest man on the squad. Just 18 players will be brought to Medford for the opening game. Wayne Thornhill is assist ing Durham as line coach and Ron Brood, ex-Crater high, is junior varsity coach. Hornbrook Bills Softball Fray Hornbrook, Calif - Second annual East-West softball earn will be olaved at 5:30 pjn. on Saturday, Sept. 12t the Hornbrook school dia mond. . The event originated last year when the men from the east side of the railroad tracks challenged the men on the west side to a game. Funds do nated at the game will be aoDlied to the Hornbrook Youth fund aad will be used for recreational purposes. A few of the talented play ers who'll take part are Ike Dooley, Pete Fisher, Ray Blankenship. Harle$ Baker, Loren Cummins, Ralph Chad- f wick, Buck Skeahan, Skip Shinar, Ralph Bennett and George Brautlacht. Shinar ' is skipper for the East Bearcats and Bob far mer will manage the West Al ley Cats. Umpires will be George McCann, L. C. Walsh and Frank Lowe. A base running contest may be a side feature of the fracas. The public is invited to the funfest. There will be a food concession stand on . the grounds.
